The Prototype 2 Thread: The HNIC in NYZ!

Why isn’t there more talk about this game?

I’m about 6/7 (give or take) story missions away from completing the game, and let me tell you…this game is a real trip!

Of all the angry, vengeance seeking main characters, James Heller is possibly my new favorite. Compared to its predecessor, this game is far more focused, polished and just downright fantastic. Of course, Prototype 2 still suffers from the weird camera angles in tight spaces, herky jerky targeting system, although it has been improved…the battle mechanics are still not as smooth as they could’ve been.

The new streamlined moves and skills eliminate the clutter of stuff from the previous game and instead provides the player with a limited, but nevertheless, badass moveset.

Contrary to what you may have heard from reviews that graded this game poorly coughIGNcough, the game’s faults are typical, but the more trivial and nitpicky complaints are just downright ludicrous and grossly exaggerated (ex: James Heller being an unlikeable character because he curses too much).

So far, no game with angry, vengeance seeking protagonist (neither God of War, Asura’s Wrath, etc) made me feel like an uncontrollable killing machine that no matter how many enemies; be they; tanks, helis, mutants, super powered soldiers, Godzillas, Cloverfields, Sentinels, Galactus, etc…I just cannot be stopped.

It’s too bad critics were not very impressed with the game…I guess Activision’s pockets are not as deep as EA’s. =P

As far as the year is concerned, Prototype 2 is my fave game to have been released, so far. After so many let downs this year, it’s good…no, GREAT! To be able to unleash some of that built up frustration in the form of dicing helicopters into two with my armblade, along with some great gameplay, consistent pacing, non-stop action and a crapton of OH SHNAPENHAUGEN!!! moments.

I hope you guys are enjoying it as much as I am.

This is Richardson, signing of with:

THA’ DOCTA’ IS OUT! MUTHAFUKKAH!!! kicks scrub off a helicopter from 86 stories high

The truth!!! I couldn’t be the only ninja enjoying this game. Imma go ahead and say Prototype 2 is basically crack on a blu-ray or for my Xbox peeps crack on a disc.

There is no greater feeling than ending an alert phase by destroying everybody on the screen!!! Its like the only thing missing is whay hasn’t there been a hulk game like this!!

And Richardson please tell be you bugged out at the sheer chaos of RZ!!! what!!! Red Zone the choas level is of epic levels!! I had more fun running around just shooting zombies or Infected as a Black Water soldier. I get so caught up in just flying around hammerfisting shit aka Hulk Smashin shit. Choppas no problem, tanks no problem, big ass Robeast No blazing sword needed!!

Just James Heller.

I just don’t get all the critics on some yea story sucks? What story was you expecting? Pretty much if you didnt play the first game they give you a recap.
I for one have no problem with the storyline or James Heller. I love him killing some shit then saying mothafucka or bitch! Because after some of the shit you kill i know I was saying bitch myself.

So I just beat the game and off of my first play I have like 80% trophies so now it’s only fun to go get that plat trophy and do the new game + on Insane.

I love this game!!! The most fun I have had in a long ass time!!!

Time to go give a helicopter the shin-shoryuken!!!

YES!

This game is VERY addictive. Possibly the most chaotic/destructive game ever released.

I do the exact same when it comes to clearing alerts. I’m so powerful, I never saw a point in running away and switching appearance…gimme 2 mins and I’ll clear 5th Ave!

I think Red Zone is the perfect example of how chaos and mayhem should be done in a videogame. You even see military trucks packed with soldiers firing off at the infected while zipping down avenues, and if you’re as lucky as me, you might even see a brawler flip them fuckers over. The difference in being airborne, taking in the calm, but tragic sight of a destroyed New York skyline is jarring once you hit the ground and see that it’s hell on earth. The atmosphere and the feeling of total apocalypse is captured stupendously well.

My first battle against the Goliath while listening to the dispatcher hollering in amazement/fear at how Heller took the beast down, limb by limb. I had tears in my eyes at how epic that was…and having to hightail my ass over to Guerra soon after only added more to the feeling of urgency.

The story is cliched, but it’s told and paced well enough to keep you going. This game doesn’t need any philosophy, or moral of any kind to be appreciated. The game’s true artistry comes in the chaos that you’re surrounded in and the mayhem you retaliate with. Prototype 2 is as intense as it comes.

Heller’s character is portrayed and developed well, and Alex Mercer is pretty damn solid as a villain. I’ve no idea how Heller’s considered unlikeable, though, his cursing is nowhere near as excessive as other critics made it out to be and when he did curse it was always within context accompanies with snappy one liners here and there. But, what surprised me most was how the many improvements on the game seem to have been downplayed?? How can such a blatant display of polish be glossed over with just a “oh and the graphics are aiight, but they still don’t look as good as they should, especially this far into this gen”. The game improved many other areas aside from the graphics, ya’know? I really do believe many game review websites, especially the big ones are bought out. This is no conspiracy theory, just watch IGN’s video review for Uncharted 3. Ironically, the same dude that reviewed Uncharted 3, also reviewed Prototype 2.

I got the collector’s edition of the game and the package is just fantastic! Beautiful display all around.

I’ll keep saying it till I’m blue in the face, this game is funk-tastic!

Richardson says:

Blackwatch has now renamed their agency to Bitchsquad, after 86,000 of their so called best achieved the prestigious “bitchmade” rank.

I’m a bit disappointed with this. It’s still fun, but it’s not much of a leap from the previous game. Plus, it seems like it’s much shorter and not nearly as much content as the original. Even though the first game was only on Manhattan, it seemed like a much larger space, or rather more dense, than P2.

Plus they removed a number of moves and abilities. I know they wanted to go more streamlined with it, but there isn’t much in the way of abilities and techniques, compared to the original. I REALLY miss the armor defense ability. Also, the dodge is really weird and finicky. The ‘updated’ targeting system doesn’t make it any better either.

But what really bugs me is the change in Alex Mercer as a character.

Mercer, and End game

Spoiler

After the first game, he saved NYC from a nuke. Now in this game, he wants to create an army of evolved and control humanity with the Whitelight virus. What the hell brought this change? I feel like we were missing some important bit of information. It was just weird for them to pull this out of their ass. I know Mercer wasn’t really ‘good guy’, but he wasn’t really a megalomaniac either. It just seems like Radical wasn’t happy with the character and they just wanted to get rid of him

Anyway, like I said I’m pretty disappointed with this game. I just expected them to do much more with this game after all the time they had.

I’ve been playing all day today, basically… just got Hammerfists though… I’ve done more random stuff and the //Blacknet missions, along with the first Event stuff from Radnet.

Sheeeit, part 1 was my favorite game that came out that year.

P1 had a number of flaws but the targeting system really wasn’t one of them at least for me it worked fine, anyways what made P1 so great in spite of it’s flaws is that it delivered on the one thing it promised: tons of bloody immature fun ways to kill people and monsters. I’m sad to hear the move list is smaller.

Hell yeah, Prototype 2 has consumed my entire weekend…no regrets. I’m almost sad the last story mission is over now… it was a “thrill ride” to use a tired old movie critic phrase.

*I don’t really get some people’s complaints about fog… at least in the Red Zone, it actually makes perfect sense considering just how fucked up that part of the city is. There’s fire everywhere, destroyed buildings (one of which is actually leaning over into another building!), and fleshy “clumps” of infection all over the place with freaks running around, all kinds of chaos…sometimes it’s stormy weather going on in that area as well. I wouldn’t expect any long-range visibility to be good in that situation if this were taking place in real life. People just jump at the chance to criticize the hell out of every possible thing.

The last 2 story missions were insanely awesome. I can’t get enough of this franchise.

I beat the game this weekend. Had a lot of fun playing as SGT James “Doakes” Heller.

just beat it this morning.

“HELL FUCKIN YEAH!”

Loved Heller’s potty mouth.

Also endgame question by Dana Mercer - “What do we do now?”

My answer “The city needs re-population…some how.”

Seriously 2 things, Heller should have smashed Sabrina Galloway and Dana Mercer. NOT with hammerfist. Secondly I wanted to consume Galloway, use that form for a while.

One more trophy for platnium love this game.

You can watch ordinary people getting turned by the virus! Haha, that’s cool… a friend found this out and was telling me about it a few days ago…naturally, he started spreading the virus around the city on purpose. It just happened in my game by accident, actually… the shit hit the fan when I released a Brawler from it’s containment cell inside a base. With all the chaos from the shooting, explosions and me fighting with the Brawler to get its upgrade DNA (*it had that yellow upgrade symbol above it), one of those big cannisters of the stuff was busted and leaking! Soon, there was a nice red cloud in that area, and I could see the scientists and soldiers getting affected! I think some of the newly created freaks ran out of the base to start attacking normal citizens. Oops… well, I got my upgrade DNA from that Brawler and left the scene. Heh, that was great.

I’ve finished the story as of Sunday, and I’m level 17 now, “80% complete” according to the save file info… also got my first platinum trophy for the Rampage event that became available on Monday. Rampage is an easy one… you just rack up points killing as many infected freaks as possible in a certain amount of time. Naturally, you get more points for the big guys like Brawlers and Juggernauts. I stuck with my usual combo of whipfist and Hammerfist. Whipfist is SOOO good for points when you whip across a crowd of the regular guys… then there’s the Hammerfist “Superman” dive move that devastates the hell out of anything.

Sheeeit, Hammerfist has been my favorite attack form ever since I got that sumbitch… it’s wayyyy better than I remember it being in the first game.

True that Mil, Hammerfist i call aka Hulksmash. I roll Hulk Smash and Wolverine. I do like the whip guess i can call that scorpion.

I should have started the game off on hard, hard is mad fun right now. This game is great and now with this play through imma see if I can unleash the M-virus on normal peeps with those containers.
