New good search:
Term “???” --> “ASCII pad”! --> click for ASCII pads

New ASCII pad auction found:

I’m suggesting that since apparently nobody knows how to use a Hori, we don’t suggest/buy those anymore. If peeps do figure out how to use those, Toxy is all ears.

Oh yeah - I also have one ASCII stick from this last shipment that I don’t know who wanted(?). So there’s that too if people are interested.

I am wondering how does the amount of command work on the game …

if my character just standing there and doing nothing, would that still count the space?

You can program a pause, yes. Much like a rest in music, that pause has identifiable qualities (in this case, length) that do require one buffer space. Any discrete action, no matter what it is, would require one buffer space. Thankfully you can set the frame duration on any event, so a 20 frame pause (why?) would just be one buffer space.

I’m interested in picking up a programmable stick for combo video work, to make the ridiculous stuff a bit easier and breaking games apart. Preppy, do you have any good programmable sticks for sale? And how much? You can send me a PM if it’d be easier.

Magnetro can advise you on what’s best - I’d say the ASCII’s are the only way to go. I personally highly recommend the stick, but I think everybody else likes the pad more… ? I’ve got a stick if you want that (PM me), or you can let me know your max bid on a pad and I’ll pick one of those up as possible.

I looked all over the Japanese games stores we went to and didn’t see any ASCII/Hori sticks/pads/memory cards anywhere. =\

There’s a new ASCII pad available for a reasonable price if peeps are interested:

As a reminder, if people want this or any other Japanese auction (Japanese Yahoo auctions usually being the only way to get these), you can either directly go through Masato-san if you have a PayPal account or I can order it for you through him if you don’t have a PayPal account. But in the latter case that’s two middle-men. You definitely have to have one since US citizens can’t bid on Yahoo.JP auctions, but if you do have PayPal it’s probably simpler if you bid directly with Masato-san.

http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e57385249

currently at 5100 yen, willing to go up to 12,000 yen

how would I get in touch with masato san?

I got an ASC II PAD V Pro from a friend. I think its pretty much like the sticks you guys are using.

I read this entire topic and couldn’t find a “how to” message. So I’d like to start talking about how to use these controllers.

I’ll say what I found out, and if anybody can help me this will be great.

I borrowed two adapters, a Total Control 2 and a Total Control (didn’t notice any difference between them). I am using a 9V, 350 ma power adapter, and this isn’t working properly. Some commands appear very clearly, but the ons higher in teh little screen barely appera or do not appear at all (right or up in the D-pad do not show up). I am afraid of bying a powerful adapter and fry the PSX to DC converters, that aren’t mine and show 9V on their sides.

Let’s go to the controller. Maybe because I don’t have a proper led (or maybe because I am stupid) I still can’t make much sense out of it.

There are 2 buttons named 1 and 2 that apparently do nothing.

In the middle, there are 3 buttons who seems to be the ones that work to program stuff.

The middle button kis the one that takes the pad out of its normal way to do some programming, I think. Once you press it, the on screen characters stop moving, and you’ll only recover your control after you press it again.

After pressing the middle button, if you press the left button you get a menu for hold, turbo and things like that. I figured this is not the programmable button either, but mostly for turbo and other popular functions in old pads.

The right button seems to be the one to program stuff on. The only thing I can see more or less clearly when I press it is the number 200 on the right. While I press some stuff, lots of buttons keep popping up on screen, but I can’t make sense out of it (apparently, what I press isn’t clearly related to whatr apperas on the screen). I pressed everything I could, and the number 200 never changed. Once I porgrammed walking left buit I am not really sure on how I did it.

This is all I can do right now. If you guys can give me any help, and I finally learn how to work with this, I’ll make the best tutorial I can do to help other newcomers. So, any help?

On another thing, if I get tired of it after a couple of months I plan to donate it to whoever wants it, so just leave your name here and I’ll send it to you when I’m done with programming…

Day 2: Just noticed that this piece of sh*t is not working anymore. Nothing happens, with any adapter, with or without the power converter. I have no idea of why. Edit: Now its working without the power adapter. Weird… Edit 2: turned the power adapter on already in game and its working too. I just cant see much. Good news is that Total Control 2 DOES NOT mismap L1 and R1. I wish I learn to use this thing.

New stuff - I’m posting as I mess around with this thing.

If I press the left middle button without being in programming mode, a sign appears on the screen (it says ON). Didn’t notice any changes though. Can’t make turbo work as well.

Now I messed around with turbo and auto function. I maneged to get some 'A" signals on screen. One, pointing to the “O” button, also contains a small number 2. Howevere, there’s no button working with turbo, auto or whatever, and button 2 is still useless.

This pad can be really irritating.

Left middle button , function all clear, was the way to get rid of the signs.

When I press the program button, and ten the riught one, although I can see the 200 number, no matter whjat I press the screen never changes. I’ll give up for now.

Oh, yeha. Below the pad there’s a place to connect sometyhing, probably that memory card thingy you were alll taiking about. Laterz

If you press “X” or any button and perss the right button it will show a T or an A on it (i forget) then press the turbo one to make sure TURBO-RELATED FUNCTIONS are on. To change the speed of what you want it to press it at - hold the turbo button (left) then press up or down… The higher (up to 30 times a second) the faster etc.

There is HT H T and A

Hold Turbo is if you hold the button down it will go in turbo. If you don’t hold it down it will be on Hold.

Hold - It will just hold teh button down for you.

A- It will press the button automatically for you

T - Old fashioned turbo.

Programming is kind of complicated… I don’t have time to explain it but something basic would be.

Off the top of my head - To program AHVB with cable you’d do

M (middle), R (right button), R, assign which combination of buttons you want the next action to be on. So for example lets use ‘1’ and L1, then R again. Now I think it should prompt you to make the first command. So - - 001 (action #1) = D then press R then I think it will let you choose for how long you want it to be pressed so press R again to make it go for 001 (one frame) then press R again so you can go to the next action. Once you get to UF you will have to tell it to wait 003 instead of 1 frame since SJ makes you wait a little before you can attack (2 or 3 frames and 5 or 6 for dashing). Anyway, the next action after waiting for a while is to do F+HP+LP for 001 and I think that should do it. Um, I think you can do uf+lp+hp to get the ahvb, too.

hope that helps

This is the first auction I’ve seen in months for an expansion card (which comes with an ASCII pad):

It looks like I’ve found/acquired 2 more ASCII Control Packs (memory cards for your programmable pads). I probably won’t have them for a while (they need to get to Masato-san and then to me), but if people are interested, I’ve got these if people want them. I think they’re going to run around $30 each all told. =\

damn, me me. That last garuda combo filled up my inital memory on the ascii pad and had to break it up in 3 parts with one repeating part on turbo so I had enough room.

The three 4x Memory Card Expansion Packs from Masato-san just arrived, so if peeps want one, let me know.

Dark Somebody wanted a programmable stick… here’s the current auctions I saw in a quick scan:

 • just send an email to Masato-san (link to his site in the first post in this thread) and he’ll help you bid on the auction you want.

Red Horis suck. I don’t like the Hori sticks at all, actually, but to each their own. Get a Blue if you want a Hori, or wait / keep looking for an ASCII stick.
The only problem with pads is that the LCD readout appears to be more fragile(?) than with the sticks, so chances are probably about 20% or so that the LCD does not work, based upon what we’ve seen so far. I would assume that the 10K ascii pad would work perfectly.

I dont think anyone should buy a hori at all until someone figures out how to use more than 20 commands… if its even possible…

Blue Hori Sticks can input 21 Steps per button.
Red Hori Sticks can input 31 Steps per button.

The blue sticks have a button that can switch between bank 1 & 2 while the red sticks have a program lock button.

dark master do you have any idea how i can make it more than 21 on one button or is that impossible? because its extremely hard, even impossible to do a good combo using one button then having to press the next button after that, because it takes too long to do and it ruins the combo, especially doing combos where they need small frame accuracy.

It’s not possible. Like you mentioned you would have to press another button to continue your combo. It would be difficult though, pressing the button too early would stop your combo, pressing it too late would miss the next set of commands.
