It is not seen as low prestige here. Because of regulations and the fact that pretty much 90% of construction workers are part of a union. They make decent money, there is no exploitation whatsoever.

One of the things that has kept pay stagnant in AZ for so long is you can hire a truck of illigal Mexicans and pay them what you would pay 1 legal worker for the entire job.
So yes they are paid like shit, but you send our shit pay to Mexico (which is what they do) and make out like a boss on the Peso conversion.
So they actually get paid pretty well while us legal workers get fucked in the ass.

The thing is a lot of undocumented overstay their visas despite completing the paper work required to stay and become to invested to leave so stay to keep making money

Anecdotal evidence from me in regards to construction jobs, but yeah, physical labor construction jobs in the states is considered a low skill, physical labor job. Entry level is low but there is always a need for that job too. In California, we have a lot of Asian immigrants and the culture to have a prestigious job is pushed on to Asian youth pretty heavily. Any type of white collar, high paying job is greatly favored and any blue collar job is generally frowned upon.

Just to chime in a lot of these guys came in as workers for American companies and overstayed their visas. Hell a few of them started their own businesses.
So they were qualified imports.
A lot of the work fema and the national guard do the actual projects are contracted out to construction companies who bring in guys from mexico to work exactly in construction
But there are also âhandy menâ who do work because they cannot find it
But you get what you pay for
It is not at all odd to see people get work done on their house using all chinese people in california for instance. And since they want cash they are way more affordable then going to say an architect. Who will then need to draw up blue prints. Not to mention get a permit from the city.
It is easier to pay a dude who will do work on your house without getting the permits. Because it is about 70g cheaper overall.
That is america though

So cesar chavez was extremely racist and xenophobic. He wanted migrant workers gone because he felt they took away from unionized workers.
This in turn fractured the relationship with larry itliong.
The farn worker revolt was started by filipino, japanese, and chinese workers and it took a long time for chavez to get involved.
So when is say filipinos and asians are treated as second class citizens in a country that never wanted us. It is true
