…well!
It’s not elitist or stupid at all though, social media pretty much is the public square these days because as our methods of communication change, the definition of what constitutes “the public square” does too. In this thread alone we’re communicating with people from across the world, so defining “the public square” as a literal public square in your town seems anachronistic. Someone with a thousand twitter followers has more reach than someone standing in a literal public square with a megaphone. People might hear the megaphone guy, but they aren’t listening to him, wheras on twitter or facebook, you can potentially reach a large chunk of the world.
If we want to get crazy we could even make the case that online is the real world moreso than offline because things that happen or are said online influence offline behavior more often than the other way around, but that’s a whole other discussion.
It’s gotten to a point where internet access should probably be a utility considering it’s really hard to do a lot of things without it.
For all those expecting Trump to testify in his impeachment trial…
He aint gonna expose himself to perjury

…yeah.
I 100% agree.
So, Liz Cheney wasn’t sacked because Republicans decided to have a secret vote on the issue and, surprise surprise, when they can hide the majority of Congress Republicans suddenly isn’t as likely to follow whatever Trump and his Oompa-Loompas say.
That was a pretty nasty insults to Oompa-Loompas actually.
I apologize for that, but the color matched well.
Don’t get distracted by the clown world antics of these media morons.
Remember: Fox News Poll Shows 72% of Voters Want ‘Government-Run Healthcare Plan’
Dumbass media will keep you distracted and dumb if you don’t use your own brain. They count on the short attention span and emotional reaction.
Eh. I think we have already accepted right wing media to be looney world and cnn and msnbc to be too pedantic
It is. You have to have access to the internet to have access to social media. They’re making the argument that being silenced on twitter is infringement on people’s first amendment right.
What about the Jim’s and Jenny’s that don’t have a smartphone or a reliable way to access the internet? So Twitter is supposed to be the channel they use to make their voices heard? Then give everyone the internet for free.
A “town square” is a place that anyone can access. If I lost my job cause of corona, and I cut my phone and internet off so I could still pay rent with what little I had, They’re saying that I’m voiceless now.
Oh yeah, and I live in the US, so I don’t have reliable public transportation to a library, so I don’t have a way to log on.
It’s elitist. like you said:
So them making the argument that they should be allowed on twitter and NOT tying this in as well is elitist. It’s about THEM not the American people. If they really wanted the everyman to be able to say the world is flat and jews control the weather with lazers on twitter without being banned, they should also be putting legislation in place to make the internet a public utility.
They’re making it about them. The elite.
Assuming your library is currently open to the public during the lockdowns.
In my area, it is not uncommon to see folks loitering outside of the library after hours to access the wifi. It put me on edge initially, residing in a high crime area; but not being as boneheaded as I think I am, managing to strike up a conversation with the loitering party and discover what was afoot.
Lately I’ve been attempting to unpack what can be done in light of lock downs and the “economic impact” - this primarily means the effect they are having on my ability to patronize and support local businesses, e.g. small brewery already on precarious footing pre-pandemic that now offers limited business hours for increased canned beer production.
It seems to me that we have a lot of the worst aspects of our system of democracy and capitalism in our republic. Again, seems to me (socialism for the rich, austerity for the working class; censorious companies) - I am open to enlightenment here.
Here’s some of the stuff I’ve been reviewing recently:
The Historic Economy of China
The Economy of Communist China
The Economy of Modern Day China
It’s bothersome, because I grew up around many Poles that fled 80’s Poland because of Communist occupation making life terrible for them. Support for Poland and the Solidarity movement of Lech Walesa was big in the area, and lingered well into the mid 1990’s thanks to the immigrant population and cultural memory of that struggle.
Perhaps it’s shameful to be politically homeless at my age and open to these ideas; but I also bear witness to older generations believing in the bootstraps meme having spent a lifetime being coddled by family, institutions, and employers enabling them to fail upward and inherit wealth from the silent generation; while they were being degenerate alcoholics and coke heads.
Good on them, winning the birth lottery in that way; but it doesn’t work out so well for everyone. While it’s not as terrible in America as it could be elsewhere, I’m struggling to remain optimistic as the world passes me by and I march closer to the grave by the day while inequality seems to grow broader, and the simmering class warfare is undermined by useless distractions provided by mass media.
In lighter news. . . Here’s the exceedingly cute Briahna Joy Gray to discuss promises not kept. Another unfortunate trend in modern politics.
Making broadband and wifi free should be a reallity. Sadly like with pharmacy and health insurance. We always monetize these things and people still think we live in the fifties.
When a guy like matt gaetz goes up and complains about “the elite” while he has a mansion and tons of money but his breath smells so bad he says wearing a mask is inhumane and arguing for less aid during a pandemic. Well that is elitism
Twitter like facebook are both private enterprises. So they have rules and standards that they enact
You can still create your own website and spew all the bullshit you want. Hell some do that on gab or telegram. So nobody is muzzling them.
I really think antimaskers hate wearing mask because their breath smells so bad. Like shit brush your teeth. Rinse for 1 minute with listerene and chew some trident or eclipse gum.
Except we just witnessed Amazon, Google, and Apple locking arms to prevent that from happening.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favor of absolute shitheads being absolute shitheads; but it’s pretty dishonest to say “create your own platform” - these parties do so, and then web services and app stores work in unison to stop it.
Even prior to this the shuttering of the stormfront website. Not a fan, but wouldn’t you prefer to have the table at the back of the lunchroom on the Internet to keep tabs on what those criminal kids are up to?
On the other hand, they don’t need to allow sites like that to exist anymore since people are volunteering lifetimes worth of information to Facebag and there are CIA offices in the building.
Meanwhile, the filthy olds who cannot into Internet are painting everybody they dislike online as Russian trolls when they enact the justice our politicians fail to enact for them.
Things will most likely get worse before they get better. We’ve got some distance before splattering at the bottom of this pit.
lolwut?
Except we just witnessed Amazon, Google, and Apple locking arms to prevent that from happening.
TBF, Amazon, Google, and Apple can only stop you from using their own services. You can still host your own site on your own hardware, secure a DNS listing, and spread your URL around to interested parties by word of mouth. Just because big tech make that so much easier to do doesn’t mean you have a right to their labor.
Except we just witnessed Amazon, Google, and Apple locking arms to prevent that from happening.
Actually no we didnt. We watched a bunch of platforms ban him and then we watched a host decide they no longer wanted to host parlor.
You can launch a website without using Amazon as your host.
