That extra $206 is for an additional Monitor, Headset, Mouse & Keyboard in case you don’t already have those. All items chosen are of the best quality possible in that price range according to online reviews and my personal experience/recommendation. If you already have all those peripherals, then it all comes out to $546.67 give or take $5 since that power supply is on sale.
If that additional $46.67 is bothering you, then can shave off the following to get closer to the $500 mark:
Use a cheaper mouse and keyboard. That’s the cheapest mechanical gaming keyboard on the market, but if you’re not that hardcore you could go with the $25 Microsoft solution. Save about $35, but in my opinion the mechanical is worth it. The mouse is almost too cheap to matter, but at $16 you might as well pay another $15 to get a Logitech G300 which is a much better mouse. Same thing with the headset. I know you’ve got some speakers/headphones lying around the house and you can pick up a $10 mic at Walmart.
Skimp on graphics with a GeForce GTX 730. New or used, you’ll get back $40, but your performance will drop dramatically. The good side is that you can still play games now, but save that $$$ for the newer better cards that are coming out in June. These new cards will be a HUGE step above anything that’s out right now. My suggestion is to buy a used GTX 730 and play with reduced graphics and save for a new mid-range card once they come out, or a current card at heavily discounted prices.
Replace the Power Supply with the Corsair CX550M or 500. That will save you between $15 and $25. But this is the worst option for shaving off the cost. You need as a good a power supply as possible and that’s a Gold rated one from a really good manufacturer (SeaSonic) at a really good price. I would suggest only upgrading the power supply if anything. Still, you’ve got enough wiggle room there to go to the lesser quality Corsair without taking too much of a hit. Oh, and when you do get around to upgrading your video card, you might be frustrated when you discover that you’ll have to also upgrade your power supply to match… the one I chose is adequate enough for future upgrades within reason and I suggest that you keep it unless an extra $25 means you can’t eat for a week or some shit.
This is the kind of system that I would want to have if I were spending $500 on a gaming computer. Your preferences may vary, so feel free to shop around and do homework and shoot any questions or changes you might have.
Here’s an actual sub-$500 “gaming” PC. That’s about as bottom of the barrel as you can get and still game. Honestly, I can’t really say how well a dual-core CPU is for casual gaming or if it’s even possible. I actually wouldn’t mind this as a replacement for the shitter at my dad’s house
60 is bad? I thought that was ok. I still have my old Phenom X2(unlocked to 4 cores). It got pretty hot with the stock cooler so after I put a new one on, it stays at 50-51.
Safe CPU temp depends on which CPU you’re using. Even then, a high temp is nothing a good thermal paste and good airflow or a good liquid cooler can’t solve.
Why is it that after I signed up for Newegg’s premier free 3 month service and buying a CPU cooler, I have received 10 emails from them in less than 24 hours? I repeat, 10.
There’s an HP deal going on that gets you an i7, a 980ti, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, 500 watt PSU, case+Windows for around 1100 after coupons. Pretty awesome, I see people shitting their pants over this deal since it’s some serious bang for your buck.
I saw your old build and it came to 850 bucks or so without a GPU and you were getting a last-gen MOBO, CPU and RAM. Don’t do it, man. If you’re gonna skimp when it comes to PC gaming in most cases you’re better off just getting a console.
And this is my power supply, could save him $25, then $50 more by not going mechanical keyboard, but still clicky with a replaceable keycap option -no tool remover though. But Gold rated for only $25 more doesn’t sound bad at all.
Oh and find him a good cooler to sit on the CPU
Oh and learn from dumbass zoolander putting parts in while the computer is on, DONT DO THAT, JESUS CHRISTOBEL
Looking around more (like Dr.Will) and didn’t realize the i5 was last gen until earlier today. Co-worker showed me his setup(he’s not well versed in PC gaming either) and his had an earlier i5 that cost him the same amount as that deal posted. Can’t remember the individual parts elsewhere but he got hisb rig back in November.
I remember Manx talking about PSU and MOBO are the two most important pieces, that are often overlooked so I’m trying to get those down. Researching MOBO right now.
Yeah dude. It’s pretty obnoxious. I was thinking of just canceling their email notifications but I guess a way to basically finagle what is the equivalent of Amazon prime for Newegg for free is alright?
