New Rise of the Triad was garbage. I love oldschool and I just hated it. Not as bad as Serious Sam or Painkiller but not much better. Now the new Shadow Warrior is bad ass. And I would say it’s like Red Steel 1 (never played 2) but way the fuck better.
@AYO?! Keep an eye out on humble bundles. Some people might have keys left from the EA bundle, those are worth it if you can snag any. 99% of the games were good. Dead Space 1 and 3, BF3, MoH, Crysis 2, Mirror’s Edge, etc. etc.
Dark Souls is $7.50 still I believe. That’s worth it if you haven’t played it yet. The DLC on PSN costs more than the complete version on PC with the DLC.
@dirzzt360 I saw you handing out keys from the EA bundle. If you still have any, Battlefield 3, Crysis 3 and to a lesser extent Medal of Honor are all way more fun online than CoD is. Killzone 2 is the best game in the series. It’s like > $10 now too, definitely worth checking out.
These older FPS and their re-imaginings are so much more fun than CoD. Varied level design, enemies, weaponry. Amazing gunplay. Actual thought put into what you do because of their being actual health and hazards everywhere.
If you like random 10-20 minute matches, Rise of the Triad is perfect for this. Arcade-style campaign and MP. Those EA games are fine for this, too.
Quality gap between the FPS games you mentioned compared to these ones is like comparing a random, shitty RPG to the Souls series. Give them a try, you don’t play FPS games often like you said, but you might as well play the best the genre has to offer instead of the shit-tier(CoD.)
Check out a random video on my Stream. Modern Rise of the Triad or a random oldschool FPS like Quake/DOOM. See dat pacing and gunplay.
I think I got a couple codes I can give you AYO. Not sure if they’re anything you would like but, shit, its free.
Nah, new RoTT is awesome. It shits on the new Shadow Warrior.
Did you even progress far in the campaign or try out RoTT’s multiplayer?
Yeah I’m not real picky and appreciate any help. I’ve had some friends give me keys for games that I ended up enjoying quite a bit.
I got maybe 2 hours into it and I did not like it. The original was better. I’m not even a big fan of the original (I’ll take the original Wolfenstein over it). The big problem I had with the new ROTT is pretty simple:
The enemies blend right into the background. It’s very easy to overlook them. There’s no audio ques either if they’re near you unless you stick your neck out and get shot. In the oldschool shit, enemies would generally make noise (unless it’s an ambush generally) alerting you that they are near you. You do a quick scan of the area and there’s nothing there. So, if you want to clear a room you have to stop, thoroughly scan the area and check every corner and kill all the dudes. Which leads to the 2nd problem.
Enemies spawn in all the time. On at least 3 occasions I’ve seen dudes spawn right in front of me when the room was empty. The oldschool games when they did this, it was at a spot where enemies would pour in and they would keep pouring in. If I enter a room and there’s no one there and the instant I take a step enemies spawn in, that’s just bad.
Multiplayer was nothing special. Just a more retarded UT or Quake 3.
New Shadow Warrior plays like the old games only more linear but not nearly as bad as most modern FPS.
“A more retarded UT or Quake 3” is why the multiplayer is awesome.
I didn’t have a problem identifying enemies. When enemies “spawn in” it’s usually from a door or an area you can see 99% of the time. If they see you they always let out an audio cue if the gunshots/hitstun isn’t enough on its own.
New Shadow Warrior is fun but imo it’s no where close to the greatness that is RoTT 2013.
I have had BF3 since it came out and dont care for it. I still have all of my Origin keys. I have no interest in any of those games.
Anyone want some Origin Keys?
P.S. Ive watched video of RoTT and have zero interest in it. No riot shield, not handheld…dont care for it. I know I said that Shadow Warrior sounds cool. I’ll never play it, I may watch a video of it sometime.
Like I said, im not big in to competitive fps games. All that you mention I would never even touch the single play portion. Why? Might as well play with real people instead of bots, imo. So for me it doesn’t matter if im playing what someone else considers the best game in the genre. Im having fun. Thats all that matter.
Edit: ALSO Devolver Digital will go after the IP for Blood if this does well. I fuckin’ NEED an Open Source port of Blood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqNCIBtJwZk
Fuck, I hit the quote button. No, at least three times I’m looking at a corner or an open stretch and dudes spawned in. And as I said, in order hear dudes around you have to stick your neck out and once they’re alerted and start shooting at you, then you know how many there might be.
If I want retarded Multiplayer I’ll play TF2 with gravity mods.
Edit: Blood is great. It’s too bad I lost my save file somehow on a recent playthrough of it. That pissed me off.
These aren’t competitive FPS games. They’re arcadey FPS games at their core.
In RoTT, your mobility and ridiculous weaponry combined with random power-ups are your Riot Shield.
If you enjoy those games and say you’re having fun playing them, well I say you’d have even more fun playing these games that are better in every aspect from level design to gunplay. That’s all I’m saying.
To me it’s like you’re playing SFIV and I’m asking you to play ST or CvS2 to try them out.
I grew up on horror films and I played Blood when I was 9. It’s fucking badass as fuck and on par with Doom 2 and Duke 3D. Buy Shadow Warrior, the world needs Open Source Blood.
Ive played games like that though, the twicht arcade fps. I dont really enjoy them. Why does that matter so much to you. Really, I dont even like fps games much. I havent even played MW2 in several months. I say Ive played it about 60 to 80 hours over the last three years.
I think all the oldschool FPS games are fucking awesome and each game does something better than the other(whether its humor or weaponry.)
Blood, Shadow Warrior, DOOM 1/2, Rise of the Triad, Quake 1 are all God-tier games to me. Marathon games are pretty wack though, slow-paced as fuck. Not surprised the Halo developers shat out those games earlier on.
I should play Star Wars: Dark Forces again sometime. See how it compares to the classics.
This guy is working on an open source total conversion of Dark Forces and Daggerfall. His work on Dark Forces is like 99% complete, only mild bugs. I didn’t like Dark Forces though. After those two are 100% finished he will release the engine and begin work on finishing up a Total Conversion of Blood and Outlaws.
Outlaws is obscure as hell. Only time I ever played it was in a 2nd world country.
I’m downloading it right now. Hope it works on W7.
But they’re so much better than CoD and the other FPS games you mentioned. I don’t get it. :shake:
You forgot to mention the fact that the game was a buggy, poorly optimized mess on release and the overabundance of platforming segments that somehow manage to play even worse than Half-Life’s Xen levels due to the lack of air control and the absurdly small size of the platforms you’re supposed to stand on.
Im just not into fps games like you are.
I had no problems with the platforming. In fact, I fucking loved it at times.
The platforming just has a bit of a learning curve to it. That’s it. I think that, combined with the crazy pacing, was really hard for some people to adjust to.
Only actual gripe I have with RoTT 2013 is some of the boss fights. Some of them are pretty shit.
I really want to play Syndicate. Too bad it’s only on Origin.
