The sword doesn’t play a big role in the original. It’s all about the gunplay, pacing, enemy design, traps and puzzles with great level design on top.
There’s more to it than that, too. Listen to the cheesy one-liners in the original, as well as the voice actor, then compare it to the reboot. It’s nowhere near as awesome. Little things like that.
That’s too bad you feel that way. I find most modern FPS games to be extremely shallow and boring compared to the FPSes from back in the day. Rise of the Triad 2013 is a return to form, and these old games didn’t always have battles on a flat pane…you should re-visit them and see what makes them so damn great, but you’d say you wouldn’t have fun anymore…that is literally the equivalent of me saying I’d rather play SFIV over ST because there are more characters or some other shallow-ass reason. These old games are king in the gameplay department as well as many others, they were never improved upon, only streamlined and dumbed down for the masses who need an aim assist to help them kill anything.
You can also mod these old games to have true freelook at all times which really adds to them, imo. You’re missing out.
Freelook is a must for me in shooters lol. And you must be on mollies if you think Doom is the pinnacle of FPS gun play, level design sure, but not even being able to rotate the camera…yeah there is a reason they got rid of that lol.
RotT2013 looks fun, but I’m much more excited to get Natural Selection 2 first, that seems exactly like the kind of FPS I like: The sweet spot between twitch gun play, strategy, and unique powers. I could be wrong since I don’t have it yet, maybe it’s shit but from the videos NS2 is the shooter I’ve been craving for awhile.
I play DOOM 1/2 with a freelook mod. It’s not the pinnacle, but it’s top 5 easy. Nothing really got better than the DOOM series, TBH. Duke had wacky weapons and jetpacks, Rise of the Triad is just off-the-wall in every way, and Shadow Warrior is like a mix of Duke and RoTT, but I can’t say any of them are better than DOOM, because they aren’t. Blood was pretty awesome, too. They’re all similar in some ways but completely different in others, they also all do things better/worse than one another.
You should check out my stream. Rotatable camera all day and mods to make an already great game even better.
I need to stream more Doom, actually. Stream some of the crazier .WAD file mods, too, and some Duke/Shadow Warrior. I need to get better at Blood and the original RoTT to stream those, I find them more difficult than Duke and Shadow Warrior.
Yeah it’s still Origin, but a pretty cool feature nonetheless. Would love to see other digital distribution platforms (PC & console alike) dabble with this.
The November 15, 2010 update to GFWL broke cross-platform chat between Windows and XBox players in released games. Any publisher that used GFWL after that stunning show of dedication to the platform should have known what they were getting into.
beat RAGE yesterday. pretty anticlimactic ending (i was hoping to fight a massive boss like you do during the first 1/3 of the game), but i enjoyed the ride (didn’t try any of the side missions this time through, but i’m going back to 100% it on Nightmare). i could see how the end battle would be hard with an xbox controller, but the training i had with CS 1.6’s scout pretty much allowed me to rape that game. Settler Pistol + Scope + Fatboys is the only gun i needed though out 95% of the time.
@ShaftAgent Going rambo with the SMG/assault rifle/shotgun with a bunch of bandanges on you just in case is the most fun way to play RAGE, imo. I cleared Nightmare on my first playthrough of the game with those three weapons mainly+kept a “heavy” weapon for the more difficult enemies. Pop rockets one-shot almost every enemy even on the hardest difficulties. Secondary ammo for those other weapons I mentioned is just too good.
Game’s pretty easy on Nightmare actually, you have instant recovery items and can revive yourself with the defib mechanic almost endlessly after it recovers it charges. Travelling the overworld=hardest aspect of Nightmare. Bandits can destroy your vehicle quick, and if you aren’t in one, you die in like 2-3 hits.
@Morphiend Maybe. I think ATI is putting out their new series of cards soon, so NVidia might do the same.
