The Orlando Thread: CEO Tourney This Saturday 4-23-2011

Thanks, I’m waiting till i get the game in my hands till I decide who I want to main. Scorp has always been the easiest character to learn but we won’t be the best this time around. he will still be strong though. And according to one of my friends who’s tested the game, Sheeva is indeed the worst character.

Horray for a free new game

hopefully we’ll get ranbats again or something for cs2

OMG Mortal Kombat 9 is like crack. o_o
I literally played the whole day yesterday. I might even enter the tournament at the next tourney. Though I need to play people so I can get a feel for how other people play. Smoke FTW.

Hey Tony, no need to add fire to Curaga’s post on the Revelations thread.
If you had Facebook you would’ve known.

Edited it for kindness. But I agree with what Rafy posted in the Rev thread:

“Curaga, we understand your frustrations, talk to us the community that helps you become stronger every month next before you go behind our internet backs and talk shit elsewhere where it doesn’t concern other people.”

Last I’ll speak on the subject.

I think I’m gonna stick with Mileena because I like sai spam.

Debating whether or not to buy a copy of MK9 instead of Portal 2 (before you yell at me for passing up Portal 2, I can just play it on my brother’s PC while he’s on the clock) because I’m pretty sure we’re both unequipped to YARRR it. I want to dismiss the game all right, but the devil’s advocate in me says I should give it at least as long as BlazBlue before declaring that I hate it.

That said, I think this game has the odds stacked against it. The best this game can hope for, I think, is being more or less on par with MK2/UMK3, at least as far as its competitive chops. The game has some fun combos, but the more I play of these characters, the more I wish they were in a Japanese-style game system that made sense to me. I also want faster damn jabs. Damn game makes me wait five years for a normal to reach active frames and then I have like a whopping 2 frames to special-cancel it.

And I seriously hate playing this game on pad. That Dual Shock D-pad just isn’t doing it for me anymore. To hell with awkwardness, I’m gonna give this game another try on stick. Saying that doing that will teach you bad habits is like saying that playing Virtua Fighter will ruin your ability to play 2D games. That shit just ain’t true.

@Ben — I’m just glad you’re going to give MK a chance  Once you get to play the 2vs2 you’ll be hooked, trust me. I also wish it was more like MK2/UMK3 control-wise, but I’ve just gotta get used to the new control system. It has been 2 decades lol…

Novelty is a powerful persuader.

It’s not a matter of hate on CEO.

I’ve been following both threads and the announcement of AE has me really disappointed. So now the general topic in the Revelations thread was asking for feed-back on whether they should use AE or not. Since I’m presently feeling the effects of CEO using AE I wanted to throw out my opinion to another TO so they know how this one guy feels.

That’s my perception and the feeling I got.

The entire post was focused on Revelations and how they can effect a certain player base that I happen to fall in. Don’t be so concerned.

I hope you give MK a shot, you may like it! I think you were referring to MK, but I may be wrong lol

Cheers, gentlemen, my weekend has finally arrived. Time to play some poker and hopefully stack some chips.

Keep in mind that Revelation’s top players (and a lot of other attendees) would probably prefer AE over Super, except for Sako.

Novelty IS a powerful motivator. Also, I feel like I can’t really talk trash on a game until I’ve played it enough to figure out how much of it is the game vs. how much of it is me. MK is supposedly trying to turn over a new (or old) leaf for MK9, and while I don’t expect much, I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, at least for a couple weeks to see how it actually plays.

It’s hard for me to get hype about this game, partially because it’s weird as fuck compared to Japanese 2D fighters, and partially because I didn’t really grow up with MK and I don’t have a lot of sentimental attachment to the atmosphere it cultivates. My interest in this game is purely cold-blooded.

That said, I don’t think I’ll buy it first week due to Portal 2. I think I’ll just mooch off of gatherings and turn other people’s houses into my lab. Besides, I need people who HAVE played these games before to teach me how the hell to conduct basic footsies/offense in these games. Right now I only have one overhead (I think Mileena’s split is an overhead) that I can combo off of. The rest is just tick throws and sai spam.

Also GS to CJ for winning a tournament down in Miami, beating Jo Gray (sp?) and Flash.

Oh yeah for sure, as Jebailey said in the CEO thread its probably 90% AE preference in our region also. So usually majority rules but this situation is unique so I wanted to throw out how I saw it.

From my little knowledge of playing the game and watching some of the last UMK3 tournaments on stream, it would seem that MK has always been about normal footsies and baiting one unsafe sweep/90% of the special moves in the game to set up the half life/infinite loops. It seems the later they are patching out release date, so the old human smoke throw loops will not hopefully show themselves.

That being said, I am scared of playing before the release date tournaments since those infinities have been found already. Yes there is breaker, but someone might not have that always ready to break it or the player would force them to use the breaker early as a set up for the true infinite. These are my personal opinions of the game so far, but I do agree the game seems to have more polish than the previous 2.5D versions of recent.

Side note:
Will there be a MK session at Jebailey’s on Sunday? Been slowly getting more and more interested in the game as time goes on and want to know who to start focusing on to play as my main.

I don’t like Balrog mirror matches.

I don’t even know who the other Balrog players are…

I dunno, I haven’t played that much with Mileena’s pokes, but she doesn’t seem to have a lot of fast prodding attacks besides her low kicks and her sai fireball. I like the easy dead-body crossup off her sweep, but I really wish she had something fast while standing just to clip limbs with. Guess it IS going to be mostly (careful) sai-spam with her. Wish I had a real practice mode so I could practice baiting and punishing teleport moves.

Mostly I’m at a loss as to what my low options are with Mileena. d + 4 (to use Tekken notation) xx b, d +4 (roll) is easy to buffer, but it doesn’t appear to be a true combo a la low forward xx fireball. (I’ll have to set up my ghetto all-guard by rubber-banding 2P to down-back while pressing the guard trigger against my chair.) That’s troubling, because from what I’ve seen so far roll is her fastest special. So far all I can get off a low is, um…frame advantage for a throw or the split kick?

That reminds me, I also need to check whether or not jump kicks are overheads. I also found at least one float that will get me a guaranteed b + 2 sai (u + 4 xx dash, b + 2), but the hitbox on b + 2 itself is a lot smaller than I anticipated. I kept trying to space for one after a sweep or something and kept jumping over or landing short of my opponent.

Yo quan chi all the way!!!

Best fatality in the game!!!
