The ongoing history of the GTASF

wow it took me an hour to read everything! more please

Why don’t you post one? I’m sure you have a crazy story about the ECC you won money from :stuck_out_tongue:

hell no with my engrish

Part 3 added.

This was an awesome read for a new and curious player like me lol, FILLY BABY.

That was the best fucking cake ever. Doesn’t someone have a picture?

I’ve been out of the scene for so long. All I can remember that it started when I got destroyed by Marvin’s Megaman tricks in MvC1 when there was an arcade on the first floor of Pacific Mall and what was before Orbit was a 5-bin bowling alley with a bunch of crappy redemption machines. Then there was SRK and the VA/VF crew, then there was Orbit, running tournaments (thx Nagata), and then quitting the scene to play Initial D: Arcade Stage and then quitting that to get a life (but I ended up taking up online poker). Now SF4 is out and I really only play for shits and giggles whenever someone I know is hosting. Modding my Tekken 5 Anniversary Hori with Sanwas and a custom plate is probably the only time I cared about SF in recent memory. Thank god I got that done before LizardLick got RTSDed the fuck out.

That being said, the best memories that I have from TOSF were mainly from the stuff that happened ouside of playing fighting games, and will be listed below:

  • NO FEAR (the 3S motto when TO was arguably at its peak)

  • MATCH OF THE MILLENIUM (kymah, wing, I pray that I still have the replay saved on my memory card)

  • My first trip to a US tournament, and meeting the midwest 3S players

  • Jonstar getting a T-Bones sirloin burger with EVERYTHING on it

  • Jon and Sizto arriving in Orbit dressed in similar clothes (team too sexy)

  • “What time is it? FUCK YOU”

  • Hearing Wing’s story about working at Tim Hortons and a lady asked for fries (for realz)

  • “GUY IN A SUIT”

  • “Where’s my uppercut?”

  • “I’m from out of town eh?”

  • Sitch, the destroyer of japanese arcade parts

  • Shit wasn’t Jason the 12 player who was always stoned out of his mind?

  • Annex Subs and Angry Black

  • Chinatown Center and the fobs in the net cafe

  • Clayton = pasty ass white dude from the US who would wear a wifebeater to tournaments and talk about macking innocent asian girls?

  • ATM Spidertao and his super pedo powers (I could swear he looks different from the Korean SF4 tourney vids)

  • Kymah 3: Valle 0

  • roll roll power dunk roll roll power dunk roll roll throw roll roll power dunk…

  • roll roll dostoi roll roll splash roll roll dostoi roll roll oicho…

  • Jonstar getting JDed the fuck out by JuicyG

  • Importing the 3S and CvS2 guides from Japan and learing what FRAME DATA is before most of SRK got on that bandwagon

  • Using the data in the CvS2 guide to make my contribution to SRK and post the Throw Ranges for everyone

  • the wrath of the downtown CvS2 crew (Kam+Luu+the rest of those guys) and the shitstorm that followed on the TO thread (fucking turtles)

  • Running ORBIT regular tournaments (As Nagata can attest, I ran some tourneys before he did, and if you are not made of the right stuff they will grind you and burn you out. Be warned kids!)

  • Nagata, I’m suprised you found that post for SUMMERS END

  • Shoutouts: kymah (fat fuck), wing (have you grown yet?), eric (how does someone like you end up dating someone who looks like ar sa from TWINS?), azn bomber (too sexy), barry(-insane), nelson (parry master), robert (only guy in canada who plays cross handed), dogberry (ST bible), ex_matt (how many times u been banned from SRK now?), Andy (KOREA POWER), Dennis Kim (KOREA FUCKING POWER), John Tang (<3 no homo, wouldn’t have stepped up my 3S game if it wasn’t for you ELITES!), Joe (cool killer!), KinnyGarden, Angel of Rage (superfob), Ron (representing the filipino population), Mana Boy (just for that, I hate you), David Fucking Tran, Prez (can you feel the prez-ence?), Jack aka White Reflection (wtf happened to that guy anyways), Richie (lol that’s all I got), David Spence (super duper nice guy that is also a one-man camera crew)

Since someone asked about tapes, I pulled out the drawer of tapes I have and found the following:

  • TOSF @ MWC2 part 1 and 2 (3S, CvS2, ST and MK)
  • 2nd Nationals Japan for 3S
  • B4 part 1 and 2
  • labeled “Montreal”
  • ECC6
  • Toronto MvC2 (maybe this is the fabled David Tran tape)
  • US vs Japan 5 on 5
  • ECC7 (I think this was duped off the MTL’s capture)
  • March Madness (nfi what year/location)
  • Texas Tourney (nfi what year)
  • Game Newton Cooperator’s Cup (on ISO)
  • Summers End SVCD

For some reason, hyt’s post reminded me of znzf/zanzeff… no idea why.

HYT: are u interested in making copies of those tapes? i’m willing to buy them at a cost u see fit if ur willing to do dat.

DaDesiCanadian: lol ZNZF aka best cr.RHXXsuper chunli in T.O!?

Oh fuck, good to see Doug posting!

On something Doug touched on in re: to tapes/vids. I still have a few copies of Summer’s End and some other Japanese 3s vcds.

thx for reminding me about that Jay, added Summers End and the Cooperator’s Cup to the list

Sweet Alan Cross reference in the title.

Jon’s note kills me everytime. Also, FEEL THE RAFT!

I got 8 video tapes here, only one is labelled (T2 3rd Strike - July 2001) but the rest except one is a Maxell video tape so it’s all videotaped by Shawn (DrunkinB). One tape is the B4 tape I got from Doug (thx! BTW, I paid for the B4 tape but the Cannons never replied to my mail. lol, well one of them did and referred me to his brother who didn’t reply). The other tapes are probably MWC, Texas and ECC. One tape is the first time MTL came (I don’t think its T2) where DarkDragon destroys somebody with BBhood/Juggs and Banshee rips it up with Spiral. I’d be willing to give this to anyone if they promise to rip it digitally and share it to everyone. If not, I’ll probably just buy a capture card and rip it myself.

I think I also have the results for the first tourneys and pics somewhere in the old webpage we used to have. I’ll post it later when I find it.

JayWang
I probably asked this before, but did you find your ECC4 tape? The one where BAS (?) was owning everyone with Guy in A3? I borrowed it last and I recall you mentioned you couldn’t find it. I’m pretty sure I returned it, also I don’t have it in my box but if you lost it I’m willing to re-imburse you for the original price you paid for it.

…this might go well.

Previous tourney results:

EDIT:
Fuck I lost most of the photos. These are the only two I could find. I’m sure I got some unscanned ones somewhere though, Shawn gave me copies and I just forgot where I placed it.

CvS2 team tourney pics:

If you grow up having to eat poutine and mayonnaise for every meal as well as
having to write in both English/French all the time, you would be so traumatized
your only pleasure in life would probably be tormenting other people by turtling
out every videogame you play against them.

I pray that one day I too can Turtle like the Canadian players do.

Cause to be honest rush-down just doesn’t work for me.

You mean i’m not supposed to cancel dodge into dodge until you’re close enough
for a knockdown dodge attack?

You don’t have to say anymore about it, but I will. I’m not hyped up nor crying
don’t get funny. All I was saying basically is you can’t turtle everyone just
like you can’t rush everyone. I used to turtle when I played fighting games but
I was a active turtle which is a dumb term for it but I didn’t sit back a entire
match and just look for mistakes I rushed too, plain turtling is fucking boring.
Now I rush alot and it works against alot of people and against some people
rushing isn’t a good option. So my point is if that’s your peoples’ style, you
better be able to adjust to different types of players cause soon or later
turtling won’t help your asses.

Posted by Eternal Blue on 03:15:2002 03:18 PM:
Turtling is the best. Here where I live, when good ppl play, its almost always a
win by timeout. Just face it guys, turtling is too good. It breaks you down
psychologically and its funny to watch the other guy almost start crying after
you’ve been sitting and waiting for the whole round. The only bad thing about
turtling is that your hand hurts cause you have to hold back the entire round.
Other than that, its all good.

Posted by CompassSaviour on 03:16:2002 07:18 AM:
It’s not like turtling is doing absolutely nothing. I think I’m an active
turtle, as in I throw pokes, and occasionally jump in.

Unlike MVC2 or Tekken, where if you turtle, you are pretty much dead.

There’s not a huge high low game in traditional SF games, so you can turtle as
much as you want.

Lol, Oh no, the UNSTOPPABLE overhead attack, oh no… impossible tactic
for a turtler to defeat.

… proceed to c.lk and link that into your favorite super.

… overheads, does anyone get hit by these?

Posted by WhiteScorpion on 03:25:2002 07:00 AM:
Freakin disgraces!

sigh

does this qualify as canadian shame?

Put those two in an anti-I-AM-CANADIAN commercial. They’d be like playing each
other at dan’s doing nothing, THEN some regular joe in the back is watching this
and he’s all like 'wtf is this shit?" and goes of to the nearest bar to order
some American Beer all the while trying to cover up his team canada shirt.

How can you manage turtling all day when an opponent can cause guard break after
some point? How can you avoid that? Jump around on the screen with a j.hk the
whole time? I don’t see how that’s effective…

Well, I guess that’s 'cause all I see is rushdown in the States.

learn to just defend, or parry or use athena and out prioritze vega with cr.fp.

lol. you havent paid attention to philly tourneys lately, eh? u should have been
at mm2k2, all people did was turtle against other.

neway. to answer your question. people can turtle because there is less risk in
getting guardbroken, unlike alpha 3. first of all, when you get guardbroken,
your meter doesnt get reduced, it goes back to full right away

and you can’t always do big combos when you guardcrush. if they dont have any
meter or anything, sometimes ill just let them hit me. OOH!. they get a fierce,
big deal.

if your guard meter decreased like in a3 every time you got guardbroken, people
wouldnt be turtling as much

that’s one of the reasons i like a3, you’re always doing something. there are
rarely any moments when people are just sitting there, unlike cvs2. and turtles
can be crushed

but anyway i’m starting to ramble too much. bye now.

Posted by hyt on 03:26:2002 05:05 PM:
IIRC your Guard Meter does decrease when you get g.crushed… I’ll have to check
up the Guidebook on that one. What I know for sure is that you lose 10 g.crush
points for every g.cancel roll and 15 for g.cancel counter. I forgot how many
pts is the g.meter though :stuck_out_tongue:

Posted by Sabin on 03:26:2002 05:42 PM:
hmm, really? I didn’t know that. intresting. please follow up on that for me, if
you can.

but even though it gets decreased, it doesn’t seem to change the flow of the
fight THAT much, unlike a3…if you get guardcrushed once chances are your going
to get GC’ed again…and again…and again…

Posted by hyt on 03:26:2002 05:49 PM:
Sure I’ll look that up when I get home from work. In A3 you don’t have the roll
to create that extra option when you want to get out of a trap situation. Oh
well, it also seems that when you get GCed in A3 the meter decreases A LOT.

I’m suprised I somehow made it into that post and yet I feel compelled to find out whether I answered Arturo’s question.

This thread is amazing!

I really really wish I hadn’t stopped playing SF and other fighting games when I was a kid, this thread makes me really want to learn more about the GTA scene.

Wait what… I hope that one isnt me! I was still a model when I met you guys. And even now in my disablity mode I still go tanning. =[

Anyway yea hopefully that one isnt me and there is another clayton from us!

Shrug intresting thread and stuff. Im glad I got to me all you guys! Well most I think. Id give indivudual things but I honestly do not remember everyones real name lol shrug… http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/1076229487043625479LFMcvB Whatever happend to that one dude… people said he was JSs dad maybe??? Hrmm maybe it was someone else. I remember he tried to teach me and my brother how to play some card game that was lost on me. And does ron(is that his name?) does he still post or have a new name or something? I dont check these video game boards to much anymore so I dont know.

Oh and SF4 sucks stop playing that game all of yo.
