That syntax should make sense. Just use the old thread ID as the new discussion ID. You were using the thread ID as a comment ID, which wonāt work.
Comment indexing is handled directly as comment references, as in

becomes:

A link to a thread without specification of where you should start will default to starting you to where you last left off. Kinda weird, but theyāre just trying to make it easier for you.

IIRC the first purge was the server crash in 2003. Then we had a much much later second purge in the XenForo to Vanilla switch 3-4 years ago, as closed āSystemā accounts got purged and took their threads with them.
Ahh pre 2003 srk where only the strong survived.
also the era where fist fights ended arguments on the east coast.
Switching to Vanilla gave SRK aids, then Discord came along and gave SRK terminal Cancer with 3 months left to live.
The SRK purge was something else. LOL!!
