Let me make it clear that I agree the organizers bear some culpability for the tournament format, you should never lead players into temptation like that, especially in high stakes, honor-on-the-line sporting events.
The honorable thing would have been to play it to the best of your abilities.
The smart thing would have been to sandbag a little, but not enough so it’s obvious, and then bitch and complain afterwards about the tournament format. Then we have players as victims and organizers as villains, instead of the other way around.
The dumb thing would have been to do exactly what they did.

I read about that a couple days ago. It was her father who made the decision and chose not to tell her. Unfortunate nonetheless since his “choice” was only made due to the pressures to win created by China’s sports machine. Under any other circumstances he probably would have told her right away.

Playing 2 complete matches if grand finals has a reset will probably take a long time, not to mention that in the 2nd match the competitors will be tired.
Maybe keep the round robin, keep top 2 of each pool goes to top 8 single elim, but randomize the top 8? That way people will have no reason to sandbag since it will just tarnish their image without giving them anything in return.

There are repechages in Judo and Rowing, but they’re different from the double elim format that’s used for video games. For Judo instead of running double elim for the entire tournament only the quarter finalists get a second chance and even then the best they can get is a bronze. In timed sports they run fastest loser rounds where the winner of those can qualify for the finals even if they failed to win their initial heats.
Double elimination probably wouldn’t be feasible in Badminton if it’s for the whole bracket. They could however have it be single elim up to quarterfinals, then make it double elim afterwards. I wouldn’t be worried about players getting tired if grand finals are reset. They likely train 6-8 hours a day, so playing a 2 hour match as opposed to 1 hour shouldn’t have a big impact.

Think of it this way, parasites don’t like to live in your hair and telling them to stop touching your hair and prevent the spread of lice is a perfectly rational decision.
Statistically white people seem to get lice the most. People randomly say reasons like black people have greasy hair, asian hair has different texture, native american stuff etc. I asked the whiteypedia thread and they never gave me an answer on why white people get lice .

If the players won’t get tired by playing 2 straight matches, then I’m all for double elim. Time shouldn’t be a problem then, cuz round robin (RR) takes even more time than double elim (DE), cuz all teams play a minimum of 3 games in RR, while in DE, the minimum is 2 games.
Maybe do a DE bracket, and in Winner’s Finals, the winner gets gold medal, the loser gets silver medal. The loser of Winner’s Finals does not need to fight in loser bracket.
All those other teams in Loser’s bracket can fight for bronze medal. It’s a double elim, but inspired by repechage, and there’s even no need to play 2 matches in a row, no bracket reset necessary
