I suggest going with a black background, using a yellow or white outline for the art, and using all yellow buttons and ball.
Then disassemble and dye the case black.
I would love to have a good yellow/black design.

Yeah, I saw the Afro Samurai stick. I have two problems with the white case: it’s inevitably going to pick up discoloring, and it matches NOTHING in my living room. 
If you’re looking for a change of pace, maybe invert the yellow/black and go with a yellow case/background, and use black as the art color, and white as the outline color.
I don’t remember what you painted the Afro Samurai stick with (was it Krylon?), but I used Dupli-Color vinyl dye for the stick I posted a page or so ago in this thread, and for all of my mod newbness, it turned out pretty well.
They have a Desert Sand and a ‘Tuner’ Yellow: Dupli-Color Vinyl Dye
wow, it looks amazing already. i love the grey paint brush strikes with the dash of red, it actually matches perfectly the button scheme i’m gonna do.
as for character variations, i’d love to see any ideas you have. what might be cool is an anime cut similar to the ken/akum/ryu combo that’s there already but of the original 4 bosses.

pretty sure they have the ability to convert .psds .tiff should be fine, just put a copy of it in different formats if you want to be safe
