The Official SRK Gun Enthusiast Thread

Thanks for the suggestion, I will check it out. Yeah I’m just looking for any .22, under $200 hopefully (or less haha). Just to shoot targets with, nothing else.

This thread is gonna get somebody killed.

but wait, threads about guns dont kill ppl… guns kill ppl!

You’re welcome. If you want to stay under $200, you can forget the 39a, they’ve also gone up steadily (like everything) to where they are about $450-500 new now. They hold value also, so at best you might find a really ratty specimen for $300. It’s an heirloom-quality lever action .22 though.

If you go to most any gun board and ask about a plinker intro .22, most people are going to say a Marlin 60 or a Ruger 10/22. Both camps have their fans and detractors. The 10/22 is infinitely more customizable with aftermarket parts. A couple of people might recommend a Remington 597. A Marlin 981T might also fit the bill for you, I have had a good experience with mine.

Btw a Saw is surprisingly accurate if you know how to shoot it. Had to qualify with one in the Army and once you learn to burst fire it, it is accurate as hell. Problem is it jams just by looking at it.

Do the Army and the Air Force use the same names? I had to qualify with M240, but a friend who went into the Army said he had to qualify with the M249.

A gun is called the same no matter what branch it is in. Most branches just use different ones. I know some of the Marines still use M14s and those things are old as shit. BTW a 249 is a Saw.

Most Respectable Shooting Ranges will have an Instructor on hand and they will usually teach you how to handle and shoot properly as well as proper Gun safety and cleaning Techs. Sometimes it’s free and sometimes is costs you. It depends on the The place.

I’ve never actually Fired an MP5N but From everyone I’ve talked to that has, they’re a great gun. But As for why I’d want to own one? Because I’d feel sorry for the poor motherfucker who decides to break into my house. ::bgrin:

I chose the M3 Shotgun because it’s the most trusted Law enforcement Shotgun. I was going to say the Remington 1740 But I didn’t want to get laughed at. Here’s a video of the Remington 1740 http://www.lesjones.com/2008/06/16/double-barrel-pump-shotgun-moe-szyslak-style/

Though I think that’s a custom gun.

I have the following:

HK .45 USP
HK 416
590A1
SigSauer P229

I don’t think glocs are pieces of shit. I have one, amongst other guns I have in the house and it’s been fucking awesome. Never jammed up, never had any problems. If I do, the gloc plant is 20 minutes away and I can go talk to the gun smith on site.

They sell out the plant? I need to pick one up for home protection

If you own a Glock, I have a question for you. Is it true the G18 can do full Auto out of the factory or do you have to mod it to do that?

The M240 and 249 are two separate weapon systems. 240 is a medium machine gun chambered in 7.62 meant for emplacement / vehicle mounts. The 249 is a man portable weapon chambered in 5.56. Different guns for different things.

Some of the Marines I’ve worked with have the newer Mk 14 made with composite stocks / picatinny rails. It’s meant to replace the M82/107 Barrett we have for anti-materiel purposes. We’ve still got an old school M14 with wood stocks in our safe. SVD was also a fun rifle I’ve had a chance to shoot while in Iraq.

As far as civilian weapons, the only pistol I have is a Browning .22 that is tons of fun to shoot. I was thinking about buying a 226 in .357Sig but ammo is expensive. Also got a .22 Marlin, a cheap 20ga Remington Express, and a Savage .243 for deer.

Moob knows nothing, he stole his name from a cow.

alright… something I actually know something about.

There has been no civi version of the MP5 that is an exact copy. The closest you will find if the old HK94. The barrel is longer due to regulations. It is also really hard to find and will carry a large price tag with it. There is a civi version of the P90 though, called the PS90. Just saying, its a cool gun.

The desert eagle… it is legal to own. …see below

My personal fav shotgun is the benelli nova. The one that will get the most press will be the remington 870, since it is used by pretty much everyone. That means it will have the most options and accessories available for it. As you go further away from what is used by law enforcement and so forth, you get fewer and fewer options being produced for them. The M3 is nice, but no pic rails on it.

You sound like you played a game and wanted to own a gun. Shooting is an expensive hobby, and it is a serious one. You can’t just jump into gun ownership. I would suggest taking a class or two and taking some trips to a local range. Most big ranges that are also stores will allow you to rent guns at their range. It’s a better way to get your fix than spending a ton of money and realizing you don’t like it that much. Or you could just go the quicker less responsible route and buy a $350 romanian AK clone (or some other previously soviet side country).

The biggest problem with the desert eagle is that it doesn’t do anything better than any other gun, and it costs far more. You can do three things with the gun, hunting, self defense, and recreational shooting. You can get a quality .45 for far less and have just as good (if not better) a combat handgun. It will also be far easier to carry. You can get a high power hunting pistol for far less as well, and it will end up being more accurate and reliable. You can get it for fun shooting, but the ammo costs an arm and a leg (assuming 50AE), so you will waste a bunch of money shooting it.

It is an obnoxious gun that doesn’t warrant its price tag. Its best feature is that it looks menacing, but that just makes it a status symbol. Which would be why they make the gun in gold with tiger stripes. That’s just silly.

Truth. Though the M16 derivatives have improved leaps and bound since it was forcefully introduced in Nam. Some of the new derivatives (SCAR :woot: ) and the development of rounds like 6.8spc are helping too.

I really don’t like Glocks, but I have no issues with the standard 92f. I would much rather have a 1911, or if you need more rounds a Springfield XD 45, but I don’t buy into the 9mm is useless myth. I’d prefer something bigger, but it will still do the job.

G18 is select fire for single shot or 3 round burst. Factory model will not fire full auto. It is also a LE/military only purchase, so have fun getting one as a civilian. I read that the full auto rate would be something like 1100-1200 rounds per minute though.

Windlordo, a 9mm is fairly fucking useless as far as a firearm goes. Had to carry around one for a year and hated that piece of shit. The only good thing was Iraqi’s were scared to death of them since the death squads used to carry them around and they are really easy to clean.

Overseas, they only use Desert Eagles for suicide bombers. They jam too often.

They use the .50 cal machineguns ontop of the humvees, oh wait those aren’t supposed to be anti personnel weapons. :nunchuck:

I don’t buy into the 9mm myth either. I don’t like the 92F for other reasons, mostly because of the clips. I’d be fine using a Sig or other quality firearm in 9mm.

I’m not a terrible fan of 1911’s. They’re a good design, but it just isn’t my style.

Speaking of newer rifles, I was excited about the SCAR, but the Masada that MAGPUL is making seems awesome. I’d like a chance to shoot it.

Haha. Fucking Geneva Convention. (It’s not, but that’s what they tell us)

you didn’t have a choice. Given a choice you would have something different, but you made do.

Did you find yourself using the handgun much anyway? I don’t know what job you were doing, but I imagine you had a rifle with you.

I would love a chance to shoot any of the new things they are coming up with. Since I couldn’t serve in the military I don’t get to be anywhere near any of them.

Yes the 9mm was my sidearm, I carried around a loaded M4 as well. You could point the m4 all day at them and they wouldn’t care, the minute you touch that 9mm they freak. Alot of the older NCO’s used to talk about how they got to carry around .32 cals as sidearms back in the day.
