Xenogears and Xenosaga were completely unrelated. Xenogears would have been episode 5 of 6, yes, but Xenosaga was starting something completely new that was also intended to be 6 parts, but of course they were unable to do that.
So uh, I always assumed that the Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection was just a snazzy port of the PS2’s Sega Genesis Collection, but holy crap, there are a ton of great games on there not found on the PS2 disc. Beyond Oasis, the first Phantasy Star, Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force I and II…it’s worth it just for those alone. I never picked up any of the other sonic compilations so Sonic 3, Knuckles, Spinball, 3d Blast, and Streets of Rage 1-3 are new* for me too. And the original arcade Shinobi? Awesome.
*edit: “new” ie not on a previous collection I own. Obviously i played them back in the day on the actual genesis…
Hell yeah. Shining in the Darkness and Beyond Oasis took up A LOT of my time along with Fatal Labyrinth and Kid Chameleon.
i am going to buy this tomorrow, just for beyond oasis. one of my most favorite games on the genesis.
The funny thing is, most people who like Xenosaga actually fucking HATE Ep. 3, because Namco fired the producer and writer (Tetsuya Takahashi and Soraya Saga, who did the previous 2 XS games’ story as well as Xenogears and Chrono Trigger), and installed their own guys to “finish” the story, AKA make it blatantly about Space Jesus and Space Mary Magdalene and totally fucking it up pissing off all 100 fans of the series. But at least Namco’s guys had the balls to make the damn near direct Xenogears references, they told the head writer (and Square Enix) to fuck off and straight up threw in Abel as the Contact (complete with an optional System Id boss fight) and showed him interact with the Zohar. I was kinda impressed.
the collection also has a easy plat which is currently my only plat. the only complaint is sound issues in sonic 3.
It’s even part of a sale that all the gamestops in my area are having right now (not sure if its a country-wide thing).
Speaking of Sonic though, what’s up with Sonic Gems Collection and Sonic Adventure DX Director’s Cut not being ported to any Sony systems? I would really like to have the 12 sonic game gear games (especially tail’s adventure), and Sonic R and Fighters would be nice too.
Gems was ported out to PS2, it’s just incredibly hard to find.
My biggest complaint for the Sega Collection is the lack of lock-on function for Sonic & Knuckles, other than that I’m pretty satisfied with it.
Really? I was under the impression it was only a Japanese release?
edit: looks like there was a UK/PAL release, but no ntsc that I can see.
Yeah you’re right, my bad haha I have the euro version but it was incorrectly marked as ntsc.
When they released the collection a lot of people mentioned the lack of the lock on sonic games and sega basically said “It was either add the Sonic lock on games or get rid of every unlockable game”
Kid Chameleon. Damn, that was a really fun platformer, but I never beat it without having to skip to the end. I always ended up playing for 4-5 hours without being able to get to Marathon. Life before GameFAQs was rough!
Yeah that does kind of suck. It’s funny (maddening) how Sega has split all these games up across different packages. Like the lock-on Sonic games are included in Mega Collection Plus but not the aforementioned Ultimate Collection, and the PS2 Genesis Collection has 4 games that the Ultimate Collection doesn’t have: Ecco Jr, Shadow Dancer, Sword of Vermillion, and Virtua Fighter 2.
Yeah, it is pretty annoying. Plus, I seriously doubt adding the locked-on roms (all fucking 2 of them, not including Blue Sphere) would have been that much work all.
I definitely need to get that. Though I think I have beyond oasis and phantasy star downloaded on the Wii’s VC. that definitely sounds like the ultimate collection
As a whole game, XS3 was the best. Takahashi and Saga were fired during XS2’s development, actually. A lot of XS2’s storyline and the bit of XS3’s that was written by them was supposed to comprise the real Episode 3. After they left Namco, Namco squished basically all of what was written into XS2 (Without even knowing this, you could tell that XS2 felt off/incomplete, especially with the abrupt ass end game) and peppered the little bit of written material left around XS3’s storyline. The first half of XS2 was supposed to be much longer.
Oh, well. No use complaining about what is done. Namco has been fucking up for a long time–I shouldn’t even be that blown.
i call bullshit on sega for that. and where is our saturn collection???
i want fighter’s megamix NOW.
i have all the sega collections. i wish sword of vermillion was on the ultimate collection, though. it was my first rpg.
Sega Saturn collection with FM & Saturn Bomberman…
DIES
Holy SHIT!! Both GTA4 expansions finally made their way to the PS Store. I knew the Ballad of Gay Tony was a timed Xbox 360 exclusive but I had no idea The Lost and Damned would be coming over too. I thought Microsoft’s payoff was big enough to stop that all together. Wow. I guess I was wrong. :bgrin:
