As many of you know that the new 3.21 update will disable otherOS. I want to hear your opinion on this matter.
As for me, I refuse to update and will not be buy any more game from PS3 (except for SSF4, but this will be the last). I might get 360 this summer to replace my ps3.
To me, it is more about making sure that the big corporation take the consumer more seriously and not treating us like trash.
But I really want to know your personal opinion regarding this matter.
Don’t care. Never used Linux anyway. I wish Sony would only bring out updates that DO something instead of “improved stability/funtionality of misc games online and fixed vulnerability during mp4 playback (wtf vulnerability WAS there?)”. And there should be optional and mandatory updates.
ohhh yeah, now Bayonetta is an example of how it should be. There are quite a few incentives to keep playing…all kinds of extra outfits(*in terms of the sex appeal…cheerleader costume all the way…in terms of just a cool, badass look-- I put her in the nun outfit) and cool weapons that have significant differences in combat, and that’s on top of the core gameplay being so damn good in the first place. I think the last thing I unlocked was the Pillow Talk weapon, which is incredibly badass.
ah, and now I have the desire to start playing that again. Bayonetta instantly went on my “Greatest Games of All Time” list with the quickness.
The geek in me wants to nerdrage about it, but I honestly don’t care. I was never going to install linux on my ps3 anyway. It’s definitely a shitty thing to do, removing features and making the product less functional.
Scuttlebug around the net is that they did this to somehow curb exploits that could lead eventually to piracy… Which I can understand, but I don’t see how this is seriously going to stop the people who are already working towards that end. Just seems like a move that will piss off only the people potentially savvy enough to go that route anyway.
I think the point here is not whether about installing Linux or not, but about how Sony taking away a functionality of a system that I pay for. I’m not a Linux user and don’t have Linux on my Ps3, but it is the principle that big corporation are stepping on the consumer.
I think it’s bullshit personally. and yeah, it’s more then likely to help stop the possible piracy PS3 would be facing considering Linux is open source so anyone could rip it open and find out, it’s just a matter of time. But that from what I understand is the whole point of Linux, complete freedom for your hardware.
Started playing Fallout 3 today. I’m gonna restart it, but I was only 20 minutes in. Just finished the GOAT exam. I have a feeling this game is going to own me for a while.
Anti piracy? How about making a patch that fix the loophole? so this mean that they have the right to do what ever they want. So let say that some one figure a way to “potentially” hack a ps3 by using the Blueray drive, then Sony can make an update that disable BD? or if some one figure a way to hack using ssf4 save file, then they can make an update that block the use of that game?
And remember, there is not viable hack for PS3 yet, except to open up the ps3 and messing around with the hardware. And it is currently impossible to play pirated game on ps3.
Take 360 for example, they did the right way by blocking the machine that is hacked. Why can’t Sony it this way? Then it won’t taking away any functionality. And beside, only a small number of people actually use hacking for pirate game. Most just want to make the most of their system.
Then I guess the frustration shouldn’t be directed at the companies trying to save their revenue but rather at the idiot pirates that ruin it for the rest. As it has always been.
Losing functionality sucks, but I can see why they did it. OtherOS did nothing for the system, it was needed to play games or anything it was just a bonus. If they had problems with exploiting a save or something like that, then they would probably just patch it up and not remove it.

You know for me this wouldn’t be such a big deal if it wasn’t something Sony had hyped the ever loving shit out of at EVERY SINGLE PRESS CONFERENCE for the PS3. This was a big deal and half the reason I bought a PS3 as soon as I did. I payed 600 bucks for the thing and now one of the premium features I paid for is gone. I may have wanted to try and use it in the future but now I can’t EVER use it. A feature I was interested in and paid money for is now no longer an option for me because instead of taking the time to create a real fix for the problem (That doesn’t even exist yet mind you) they punished everyone (with an old system that could use Other OS) for something a few people could POTENTIALLY DO. Mind you no one’s done it yet. Just they might have been able to. Basically my loyalty and faith in Sony and their hardware (Since I bought a first gen PS3) was kicked in the balls over a possibility. not an actuality.
If you can;t see whats wrong with that then…man I dunno what to tell you.
