Have firmware updates always been put up on Japan Standard Time?
Calling early April Fools on this, even though I don’t use the Other OS feature. :xeye:

So after this update, the only reasons left to own the giant 60GB lump, would be PS2 and built-in card readers?
But wow, I’m sure this is the feel-good news of the day for the hardcore YellowDog community… especially the ones who handed over five hundred and ninety-nine US dollars.
4 usb slots are nice.
i outside of the date, i don’t see why people think taking out the otherOS is an april fools joke. usually, companies use april fools as a marketing tool to gain good press in the media. taking out otherOS is obviously something sony doesn’t want to do, is going to be bad press, and it only effects a small subsection of ps3 owners, making it a niche joke at most, all while infuriating a fanbase. and sony’s marketing is kinda on point right now, and if this was a joke, i know for a fact someone would be fired.
its not exactly where you go “april fools! you get to keep your shit!” and it makes people go “oh, sony… you’re such kidders…” right before running out and buying 5 dualshocks.
This post is from a real programmer with industry knowledge… and even if you don’t know his reputation, his point is worth considering http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=20500559&postcount=309
Hopefully this update is the end of Sony cutting features from PS3 (even though Home can jump off a cliff)
That post doesn’t make since at all.
He is saying it could have happened with or without the hacks being discovered. They are not removing it from older systems to save money, it has already been removed from the new systems. That is almost like them removing the functionality of the card readers, since the new PS3 don’t have card readers.
I believe they are covering up any holes in the system, that can lead to anything not in their favor.
Hey I got this from the hot deals thread that Amazon is selling Bioshock 2 for $50 but not only that it comes with the 1st game for free. I’ve already placed an order. =)
Doesn’t this give reason to hack the PS3 now? From what I remember, the biggest reason hackers hack consoles is to see if they can put an OS on it.
Just out of curiosity, what is the legality behind all of this? Can they advertise something and just remove it? I know they have rights over what they own and can do what they want, blah blah blah, but can you really just remove a feature like that without any legal recourse?
The answers you’re looking for are in the ever-powerful, ever-changing “Terms of Service”.
i think that there may be only a little truth in what he’s saying, but as a cost saving measure, you aren’t talking about saving a shit load of money to just randomly drop it. it isn’t as if sony has a crack team of 50 people who are completely dedicated to making sure linux runs on every update…
if anything, the hack offered the opportunity for sony to take it out for a reason, lessening the blame.
i’ve been keeping up with this:

alot of hate coming his way.
i never wanted to use it and the ps3 would only function as a retarded pc anyway. i don’t really care about those emulators…when my pc or wii lol does it too.
yeah, never really got why people cared about emulation and hacking their systems. Seems pretty stupid.
I think the most usefulness in terms of emulation on the PS3 was a MAME emulator with limited games to choose from and no sound.
Pass.
You guys are going “Well, I never used it anyway” the same way you were about BC. The fact is, it fucking SUCKS that functionality is being taken away. You can complain about hacks, or costs, or whatever, but considering you have to have updated firmware to even get on PSN and take advantage of some of the system’s features (and magically taking some away) really fucking blows. This is another example of companies using the terms of service to fuck their customers. It doesn’t matter if you use it or not. Some people bought their consoles specifically to put a new OS on it cause they wanted to be 1337, or whatever. Companies taking away features simply because they can really fucking sucks.
as long as they dont take away the ability to play PS3 games I’m good.
I bought a 2600 to play 2600 games
I bought an NES to play nintendo games
I bought a Genesis to play Genesis games
You rebel, you!
I don’t condone or agree with them taking shit out. That’s bunk no matter way you look at it. I just don’t care about the stuff they’re taking out because it’s stuff I don’t use, that’s all.
They are just trying to patch a gaping whole in thier console. I agree with RoninChaos. It’s stupid for me to lose a feature in a console and require an update to de-evovle the unit. Did I use it, yes once, but the fact remains that it’s there. Now, if Sony trashes BC, then what’s gonna happen? Will we all hoot and holler then?
Overall, this is a bad move for Sony.
It’s wrong to take away a feature, that was advertised and paid for. I don’t know how legal that is. TOS doesn’t give them the right to just do whatever they want. I’m not affected by it at all. I waited to see what people could do with it way back then. They said the graphics chip was locked out, so they couldn’t do much with it, that is when I lost interest in it.
If they took BC out of the 60GB that I paid for, I would be beyond pissed off. When PS3 launched, there weren’t much PS3 games so they had to include BC in all of them, or else they would have collected dust in the stores until enough games came out.
If they ever did a firmware update to do that, I would be just as pissed. That’s one of the main reasons why I purchased my 80GB PS3, so I wouldn’t have to keep switching between my PS3 and PS2 to play certain games, I could do it all in one machine.
I can see why people would become upset over the loss of OtherOS, even though I personally never used it or cared about the feature myself. OtherOS to some people is like BC is to me. It was the purchase pusher for our early PS3s.
However, April 1st has had weird jokes happen before, so the best we can do is see what happens on that date.
