The phats are prone to overheating (unlike the slims) so you need to keep them in well-ventilated areas (and off of carpeting) to ensure a lot of air-flow. Regularly blast it with compressed air to keep dust bunnies from building up.
Also, don’t keep your PS3 on overnight (folding, gaming, etc.) as it needs to cool down. Every couple of hours (Gophermods say 2-3 hours) power down your system and let it cool down for 30 mins. or so.
^ my Jap phat model gets crazy hot. I play fighters in a small bedroom in my house (CRT tv) and if i have the door closed that room heats up super fast.
Anyway. i really wish there was a way for the netflix disk to keep working. Since i have a Jap ps3 the app wont work on ps3 because of the region. but the disk worked just fine. So lame. Now i gotta find another (cheap) way to get netflix on my TV in my living room. Im thinking about buying a long HDMI cable and connecting it to my computer, and using my TV as a dual monitor.
My fat mgs4 ps3 has been running really hot lately. Which is shitty, because I really only use it for blu-rays. By the time the movie is done its loud as fuck and hot. If I see a slim at a good enough price I might scoop one up. Considering how little I have used it this is ridiculous.
People have already told you by now but do not send it to Sony because they will wipe your hard drive clean, meaning all of your game saves will be gone. Find a “neighborhood” guy to fix it. Do a search for people who fix PS3s in your area. It will only be a temporary fix / band-aid no matter what but that’s true if Sony does it too so your system will only last about 3 months if you play hardcore. Still when a non-Sony person fixes it your game saves will remain in tact.
When you get it back do not play it too much and hold out until you get a Slim. Once you get a PS3 Slim use the Data Utility Transfer and move all of your files and game saves to the Slim. Even Copy Protected files will move over to the Slim.
I’ve had a Slim for a year now and so far no problems.
Sucks you gotta buy the same system twice though. I guess if you get X-Mas bonus money or Tax Return money to spend you can hold out until then, if you can spend dough like that.
Just in case you aren’t doing this already, hit up a computer store and get a can of the air they use for blowing out the chassis. No risk of static building up and it’ll help knock out the dust builing up around the intakes on the machine. of course, a CD lens cleaner is a must, so grab that. I’ve had mine for about two years and it’s still rollin’ like a champ.
If someone can get vids of Time Crisis using the move, I want to see it. I might be temped since I love Time crisis, but it better be some sweet temptation.
Sonic Fan Remix plays better than Sonic 4. Real talk. Google that ish if you haven’t. You guys talk about dying PS3s and whatnot, my fat 40GB might be on the brink itself. I notice the fan is revving up to (what seems to be) 100% speed whenever I’m playing a disc game, mainly Tekken 6. I did the fan trick, but haven’t really played it since. I’ve also cleared the intake vents on the right side. We’ll see what happens. Might be making my way to a slim sometime in the future. Would I be able to save my save data on a thumb drive? I wanna make preparations now.
A thumb drive won’t work on Copy Protected games. Just wait until you get a Slim and use the Data Transfer Utility. It moves everything and I mean EVERYTHING from one system to the other. All PS3s have this feature via an upgrade we got about a year ago, it’s under System Settings if you want to check. All you need is an ethernet cable and that’s it.
