The Official PS3 thread

So I think I’m gonna make the switch today and buy a PS3. I’ve wanted one for a while but a few recent releases (Demon’s Souls, Heavy Rain) and a few upcoming ones (3D Dot Game Heroes, Final Fantasy 14 and I don’t have a PC) and a general lack of use of my 360 have spurred me to make the plunge.

Anyone have any insight to hard drives that make for a good swap? Is 250GB enough for most people or should I spring for 500? Any brands I should look out for?

For me 250GB is enough but it depends what you want to do with the system. I’ve had PS3(s) since the launch, a 250GB now and I still have about 160GB left. I have a crap load of games saved on it so no worries for a long time about upgrading.

If you plan on saving a lot of TV episodes and movies on your PS3 those eventually will take up crazy space (3 episodes of anything is about 1 GB total, movies are at least 1 GB if not bigger). Music, Themes, pictures and things like that take up very little space so you don’t have to worry about those really.

Some games have Installs which take up a lot of space, but me after I finish / stop playing any game I delete the install. You can always re-install a game again if you want to fire it up later on. And of course deleting an install has nothing to do with your save file. Some games have optional installs too, but it’s almost always better to install IMHO. At least while you are playing the game of course.

If it’s just for gaming 250GB should be fine. If you are going to upgrade you might as well go all out and get 500GB so you won’t have to do it again in another few years.

Don’t know about specific brands, all of them can get the job done and if they can’t then something is probably wrong with the one you bought and not really the brand per se. Get whichever one is selling cheaper.

Tenchu Z is a good game, people shitted on it for no reason.Fucking gaystop still doesn’t have Yakuza 3, shit is ridiculous.

I thought the single player campaign in BioShock 2 wasn’t nearly as good as the first game, and the story was overall less interesting than the first as well. The Multiplayer though I think is damn fun, it’s satisfying as hell freezing someone then meleeing them twice afterwards and having them shatter into 50+ pieces, or having someone chasing you then lighting up a puddle of oil on fire for them to walk through then finishing them off with your machinegun, or just plain being an ass to everybody when playing ADAM Grab mode. I fired that shit up a while back after getting rank 40, and no one can touch me in that shit. #1 everytime, I love that mode. Shit keeps me on edge because you know people are constantly going after you trying to take back the Little Sister.

I rarely saw the framerate dip in the multiplayer, though more annoying than a rare dip in FPS was this strange thing that would happen when strafing and moving the crosshair around, the screen would literally do a 180 on its own and you would also sometimes move forward a bit or backwards. This would happen in single player and multiplayer, it’s fucking strange. I call it the lag teleport.

I looked at my friends list yesterday and everybody I have added from SRK was playing FFXIII. SRK fucking loves FF.

Slight Rant, I fucking hate Gamestops practice of not shipping out games until the day before their street date. That shit is fucking stupid and shit like this always happens. Where the day the game is supposed to be out it is not there yet, it is almost damn noon that shit should be there when the store opens.

I feel the exact same way, I remember when GTA: San Andreas came out and the GS employee told me that it wasn’t gonna arrive until 5PM! 5 fucking PM!

When I worked at Best Buy, any big title that was coming out would arrive at our store at least 3 days in advance. Hell, major titles like Halo and Uncharted would show up 2 weeks ahead of time.

That store is either full of shit, or UPS failed(which happens sometimes). The GS I work at got copies a week ago.

No I used to work there, that is how they do it.

Co-sign EVERYONE was playing that joint last night.

It’s a good case for sequal-rot

Let’s face it, the first game told an entire encapsilated story with a relatively strong narative (for a shooter) and had a twist ending that really knocked on the 4th wall.

Bioshock2 comes back to the table with the cliche’ collectivism is wrong and the “But WAIT, there’s MORE!”, style of sequal where they really just take the principals of the first and turn them on their heads.

SRK, we da best…at playing JRPGs?

/hides copy of FFXIII

Well, I work there now. That day before stuff only goes down on low-radar games. Medium/big releases we get way in advance.

Hell, I never worked there (thank god), and even I know this is the case.

Living on a damn island like I do sometimes we don’t new releases until 2 or 3 days after the street date. And the damn delivery trucks around here take the day off if it rains in the afternoon.

The chick who works there BF has RE 5 Gold preordered and it has not come in either lol. This gamestop does this shit all the time. Gear and Gears 2 were not there till 2 days after release.

I used to work at GS (EB at that point) many moons ago. Large scale releases we’d have weeks before. Others would precede the release date by a day or so. Someone must not like that store.

I gotta get my TV sent for repair (Samsung LNT4671F). I think I have swollen capacitors on the board. Hopefully I get it back before next tuesday

Gamestop sucks. The only time you should ever get anything from there is if there’s a pre-order bonus that isn’t complete garbage.

I’d rather get new games from Best Buy, Future Shop, Wal-Mart, or even Blockbuster. Games that have gone down in price would be maybe 29.99 at Gamestop, while anywhere else it would be 19.99. Tekken 6 on release was 69.99 at Gamestop, 59.99 at Wal-Mart. Borderlands used at Gamestop? 64.99, a whopping 5$ off. Best Buy? 39.99. I see random used games at Blockbuster 1/2 the price of that same used game at Gamestop. Fuck 'em. Basically, you can go anywhere that isn’t a Gamestop that carries games and it will be cheaper. Literally anywhere, even random electronic stores that happen to carry games will be cheaper than Gamestop.

I fucking hate Gamestop. You’d be surprised at how much money you could save on new and used games if you stopped going there. Edit: Oh, you can also trade-in games at Best Buy/Blockbuster and they’ll generally give you the same amount as a GS would, except since everything is cheaper there you’ll save even more money after a trade-in.

It just dawned on me that I don’t even check out EB Games (Canadian Gamestop) that much anymore unless I’m looking for some old PS2 stuff or something. I mostly just hit up Wal-Mart or a small local place near my house.
