Thanks, wouldn’t have even have thought about Sony offering extended warranties. I’ll probably buy the 2yr extension; $60 doesn’t seem like a lot if I’m dumping $300-400 right off the bat on the system, extra controller, game, etc. Thank you. Any specific serial/model numbers I should be looking for in order to get the most recent model or are all the PS3 Slims the same? I know back in the PS2/Xbox days, we were checking serial numbers as different batches had different disc drives, etc.
Not really. You should be fine with any SKU really.
Since searching for YLOD gives me over 300 pages, over the span of 3 threads, I figure I’d just re-ask since the sticked info is all gone now. Anybody got any experience/advice/tips on YLOD and sending your console to Sony to get it repaired in general? I know there’s a 150 charge if the system is past the warranty date, but will they repair “Opened” consoles as well? IE The warranty sticker was taken off since I sent it to modchipman to get it repaired. (By the way, I do not recommend him for ANYTHING. So don’t even think about it) I hear stories of some people getting refurbished consoles that aren’t theres and such, and that matters to me since I have a 60gig BC. I’m also not sure if I need to take the hard drive out of the console, so I can at least keep my save files in the event I get a new console, though really I want my specific console back. Whether it’s a random ass one or a different, refurbished 60 gig bc.
Did they ever fix Bayonetta slowdown issues? good deal if that’s the case.
Pretty sure they patched it. I already played the living hell outta the 360 one so it’s a non-issue for me, but if you haven’t played it then that deal is sick.
When I contacted their customer support in November of last year, they said they wouldn’'t fix an opened PS3.
Wouldn’t matter if you kept the HDD, as soon as you stick it into a different PS3, the system is immediately going to ask you to format it.
General consensus from reading this thread is that Sony’s $150 repair service may only resolve the problem temporarily. And if it YLODs after whatever grace period Sony gives you’re SOL & have to cough up another 150 bones. I will say that from personal experience that is also only a band-aid fix, but the cost of the supplies needed shouldn’t be more than $25-$30. And you can just keep doing it as often as you need to.
No, the patch only fixed the load time issue.
The slowdown in Bayonetta PS3 isn’t that bad anyway. Only pops up a couple of times through the course of the whole game and not for very long either.
And for YLOD i preach PS3 Repair | BlackBerry Repair | Apple Repair | Gophermods LLC 1-(612)-605-3825. They will fix the problem and for 100 bucks less then Sony, they where faster, and just all around super pro. i even got the disc that was stuck in the machine back, something Sony won’t promise.
No warranty sticker = no repair from Sony.
Wow, the prices on that site are insane. That site is legit?
This YLOD talk is scaring me. How prevelant is do the new SKU model PS3 Slims get YLOD? One of the main reasons I’m buying the more-expensive PS3 over the 360 is because RROD has pretty much scared me away from 360 forever.
Doesn’t happen on the slim PS3 models far as I know.
It happens with the older PS3 phats more often, and even then, I would say it’s within the industry standards of electronics failure of 5 - 10%, so it’s NOT a major issue. Chances are, since the phats heat up more quickly, people who keep their systems on the floor or in an enclosure, which usually block the heat vents will experience the YLOD more often.
Remember that Phats have been put through the ultimate testing conditions (running in a sauna, which is the WORST enviroment for electronics, due to moisture and heat) and didn’t break.

If you wanna get a phat, just make sure the vents are clear. And Slims are pretty much 1/3 giant fan anyways (The main fan in the Slim system is SEVEN INCHES WIDE).
Just to show how big the main fan in the Slim is again:

I still think it was a stupid decision for Sony to cut off the option to play PS2 games on a PS3.
OK, then you choose.
PS2 compatibility, or PS3 costing less than $300. You can’t have both.
In my experience, the backwards compatibility on the PS3 is a bit overrated. I have the 80 GB BC PS3, and unfortunately, it can’t play all of my old PS2 games that well. For example, I tried playing Tekken Tag Tournament on my PS3, but there was just too much slow down for me to enjoy the game.
Fortunately I still have my launch PS2 that still plays all of my PS2 games beautifully. Point is, if you want to play PS2 games, your best bet is using a PS2.
last time i checked slim ps2’s were being sold for $100 so its pretty cheap to go pick one up.
I get some strange bugs playing Valkyrie Profile 2 on my PS3.
