Yeah, but I’m not too big in the SF scene, I’m mainly a Tekken player. Just stop by here because these forums are more interesting than TZ’s.

Theory of Poker by David Sklansky is interesting, it’s definitely a must-read. A lot of what is discussed there, like the Fundamental Theorem of Poker are definite musts to understand if you want to improve your game. It’s something that seems obvious but if you really understand it, you can see all kinds of applications to improving your game. A lot of it is written without Hold’Em in mind. Many of the examples are from 7 card stud, the main game at the time of writing, I believe. It still holds up though, although if you’re primarily a hold’em player, obviously getting more hold’em stuff is ideal.
On that note, Harrington on Hold’em (v.1&2) were very interesting reads. In Vol.1, he breaks down when you should call a bluff and makes a mathematical equation out of it. I was stunned…I had no idea this is what pros were thinking of when they were deciding whether or not to call. Reading parts of it made me feel like an ape from the 2001 movie. It’s definitely helped my overall NL game, even though I still don’t play many tournaments.
Obviously Hilger’s Internet Texas Hold’Em and the website associated with it is going to get high marks from me since it basically started me on the road to real poker and showed me that the game was actually beatable and that some people weren’t just “lucky”. Matthew is currently working on a book geared more towards No Limit play, so when that comes out I expect it to be excellent as well.
I honestly didn’t get much out of the Book of Tells. I read it at a library. A lot of it was common sense. Some of the stuff in there was gold though. The one suited flop one works essentially EVERY time even against very skilled players. Basically when the flop comes out all 1 suit, watch what people do. If they check their cards again, they’re looking to see if they have a high card of that suit to draw to. People usually remember if they’re suited and won’t look. Thus they either have the flush already or are playing to a hand away from the flush. There are a few others that are solid like that but most of the book is stuff you probably already know. I recommend just reading that one at the bookstore and not buying it. It has a lot of pictures and is pretty light reading; you can probably slam it in like 90 minutes or so.
EDIT:
The best Mike Matusow stuff on Full Tilt is when he’s playing on Full Tilt heads up against Prahlad Friedman (Spirit Rock). Those guys have had some legendary exchanges over the past months, with Mike dropping hundreds of thousands to him. Seriously Prahlad is going to break Mike for good if given enough time. When Mike starts going downhill against him and starts losing his temper…sheer gold.

Perry Friedman (Observer): Hey Mike, did they have
you breaking rocks while you were in prison?
lol oh shit shit talking to pros = top tier shit
Haha, I was there for that hand actually. Even with that huge hit, Prahlad still took Mike for at least 60k that night. That week, Mike was just Prahlad’s personal ATM; he cleaned him for at least 500k just in that week. I think most of that money was all going to Phil Ivey. Prahlad would be playing them both in heads up matches and Phil always seemed to have his number. Other than vs. Ivey, I can’t recall seeing Prahlad losing many heads up matches at all, even to Neverwin another internet heads up master.
And yeah, that hand vs. Jesus was rough. People are talking about this hand like it’s some kind of bad beat but Jesus had him the whole way. He had KJ vs. Jesus’ AT. Flop comes down AAJ and Jesus came out shooting (very strange). Turn is an A. River is a K. So basically Prahlad had the 2nd nuts and because Jesus came out shooting on the flop (whereas in headsup you probably wouldn’t do that with trip aces) he had to think the K on the river gave him a winner. Before he called away most of of his stack he said “only one card beats me” but of course, Jesus had the ace of hearts. The rest of the heads up was academic.

Those were pro poker players? I thought it was two kids arguing haha.
Depends on what game…I’d put money on Neverwin if it was limit…
and oh yeah, Prahlad is a white rapper
his flow sucked total ass on ESPN
what are ur thoughts on LImit vs NO LIMIT texas holdem. i always seem to have more problems playing limit because well i always seem to get beat on the turn or river and by worst hands preflop…what are the the general tips on how to play limit?
i lost a major hand the other day (flush on the flop all-in didn’t hold up and lost a big chunk of money, but i still have my winnings left) so i’m looking into limit holdem just so i know how to play and manage my bankroll a little more. help will be appreciated =D
Limit can be very very frustrating (I’m about 80% clearing my AP bonus and I’m stuck about $200 playing 2/4). I guess some good advice would be not to be passive. It’s a habit that many new limit players do, they see their midpair and call down to the river only to lose to an overcard that spikes the river. Agression is the main key really. If you’re betting at all the right spots, you should be successful.
Check call, check raise is probably the most frequent (and most annoying move in all of limit holdem). It’s much more frequent in limit than in NL. You’ll want to watch for people who frequently do that. (usually they do that when they hit a set or better, or are pulling a snow play on ya).
To manage a successful limit roll you’d need about 300xBB. That is big bets, not big blind. (So for example if you want to play 2/4, you’d $1200 to have a sufficient roll) Also, I recomend reading SSHE for hand selections and strategy. It’s sort of the bible for low limit hold em.
I got a little funny story to tell for all those who would like to read. Me and a couple of friends were playing poker in a library (on campus) and the pot ended up as…
Person A with 21 dollars
Person B with 4 dollars
Me with 27 dollars (broken pots because the game was cash-in, cash-out)
The first hole cards were dealt
PersonA (Kh,2d) small blind
PersonB (Ac,Qc) big blind
Me (As,6c) button
Person B bets a dollar preflop so I go ahead and call (since I got the higher stack) and PersonA calls also.
The flop comes out (Ad,6s,6d)
So I’m thinkin woopee I got the full house on the flop go me.
I bet a dollar (thinkin somebody might have suited high cards or pockets that helped out.
Person A folded
Person B Called 1.00
Next card comes out (4d) Complete worthless card
I bet 3 dollars and person B calls me so I have a huge bet that he has the ace and a high card.
Next card comes out (6h) this is when my mind goes happy, but I keep a cool head.
Person B bets $5.00 (knowing that he hit the full house)
I then hesitate and think (bs awhile with my quad 6’s), I tell him that he probably has the ace. I then put him all in (a good 15 bucks worth left) all the while flipping over my ACE card showing him that he probably has the best chance of just splitting the pot. After he takes a minute to think it over he then calls. I show him the quads and take all the money. Most hilarious hand I’ve played with a group of friends.
GOOD SHIT SIGLEY! too bad MY AA didn’t hold up even against ONE PLAYER
$100 in one hand is very nice. especially when i lost a big pot before that…
Pacific Poker Hand 1
AA on the button
mid position player calls the blinds and i raise just enough to thin out the field and i get called by 1 player
flop came down 2 suited Kd 6h 4h
I bet half the pot. i get called
turn came a 2s
I bet half the pot and i get raised. i call
river came 9d
he raises i reraise and he goes all-in…i call…he flipped over 6 4 clubs for 2 pair! mani felt cheated =( who calls a raise with that hand??
anyway, 20 hands later and i move the limits up…
i have Kd Qd on the button…a guy raises me and i call
flop came down Jd Td and 7d…flopped the flush!
turn came a rag
opponent checks and i bet a good amount to keep him in the pot and to see if he has an Ace of diamonds…
river came another rag…HE BETS the pot…(huge pot) and i re-raised all-in and he calls 1 minute later because he only had $10 left and i bust him. $200 pot made me feel good =D
what i like about Pacific Poker’s hand history is that they replay the whole thing for you! NEATO!
limit poker is a science. no limit is an art.
i forgot who said that :bgrin:
but in my opinion, you have to have a lot more patience when playing limit rather than no limit hold em.
very good post sigley. that list is pretty much true for me…I CAN’T PLAY WELL IN TOURNAMENTS…i always falter in some way. i have very little risk factor and i don’t gamble as much. also, i can’t survive when i take huge hits.
I love the pressure of tournaments, especially when it gets down to the point where everyone plays super super tight just to place in the money, and it usually takes about an hour for 10 people to get eliminated. And I like it a lot better when I’m not in a comfortable chip position. I’ve seen guys throw away pocket rockets preflop just so they could move on in the tournament.
