Except that people have been doing that without “achievements” since the beginning of the very concept of competition, as it were. Kill counts scratched into weapons, all the way up to perfect runs in shmups/run’n’guns, for example.

Like I said: it’s as simple as “different people enjoy different things”. If you think that somehow makes them idiots or inferior to you in any way, then you’ve got bigger shit to worry about than video games. :lol:

I personally like when games have extra things for me to do. Dead Space was, to me, a good example - it got me to use guns that I wouldn’t normally use, and play the game a different way to get a few extra trophies, after I had already played through the game. Sure, maybe you want to call it false replay value - that’s your opinion, and you’re entitled to it. However, I was going to replay the game anyway, and just altered the way I did it the second time. Another was the Metroid easter egg in Singularity. Previously that would been just that - an easter egg that some people would have found, and some would have missed. Does it really upset you so much that it now tells other people that you found that secret?

(e-peen? Is that like when you go online and try to pretend you’re better than someone because they like different things than you?)

We’re talking about stupid, not related to gameplay “activities” that players are tasked with in order to “get a platinum” and “perfect” a game.

But maybe you have a different take on gaming.

Maybe fun to you IS killing x number of y with z, or upgrading z to x level, or die x number of times in y manner, etc.

…devoting hours of time to these endeavors.

In order to get an “achievement” that exists almost always completely outside of the game itself.

If that works for you, then all well and good - I’m happy for you.

But don’t pretend that pursuing those “trophies” is gaming.

Lots of people find it fun. I personally don’t, at least not t very often, which is why if you ever look at trophies for games that require doing that, I rarely ever have them unless I really enjoy the game and take it on as an extra challenge of sorts (again, Dead Space for example).

Trophies that require you to play through a game multiple times after unlocking the hardest setting actually have the opposite effect on me. If I recall correctly, Castlevania LoS was like that. I enjoyed the game, but they didn’t have the hardest difficulty available from the get-go, and it actually made me not want to play through the game again out of some backwards-thinking-spite for their choice to do that.

Anyway, all I was saying is that either side of the coin is valid.

What do you guys think of The Last of Us? New survival horror by Naughty Dog out around the end of 2012 or early 2013 supposedly.

Female character looks and sounds suspiciously like Ellen Page… but it isn’t her. And yet her name is even Ellie.

Lots of companies jumping on zombie survival bandwagon, hope Naughty Dog doesn’t disappoint.
