The Official PC/Computer Thread

So technically, it’s the best single GPU card. Therefore it IS the best card out there right now.

No, its the best single GPU card out there, not the best card. You contradicted yourself there a bit. It can’t be the best single card out there because though the 590 is dual GPU, its still technically one card. :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t seem to delete items so ignore that shitty fan I added.

  1. What motherboard do you plan on using?
  2. Remove that rosewill card reader. Those things have like a 90% defective rate. Go for a Sony one. they are worth the 5-10$ extra

I’m sorry, I kept changing it but right now the list is pretty final add this disc drive.

Thanks for the advice on the card reader. I’ll look into it.

Also doubting my case choice vs a corsair one. I like the look on mine and the inner workings seem the same but I’m just not sure.

EDIT: The other case

The 240gb ssd is a bit overkill. Save 200 bucks and get a 60gb, and use it to boot only. Should be more than enough room for your OS, and anything that isn’t a steam librarys worth of games. As for your standard HDD, anything bigger than 1tb is fairly unstable (in my experience), as you add more platters it becomes more prone to failure. I highly recommend two 1tb hdds, or hell, even just one. I’ve yet to meet anyone who has filled that up with stuff they need. :stuck_out_tongue:

By cutting back on just your HDDs, you’d be saving 300 bucks out of the gate.

Then, you could swap that corsair psu for an NZXT (sorry, kind of biased as I carry NZXT :)) HALE82 and save another 50. It’s modular just like the corsair and provides the same wattage.

Add that to the previous savings, you’re up 350 bucks! Pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

Then!!! Save another 50 by getting a 120mm NZXT Havik CPU cooler. Bam, 400 total dollars saved without a sacrifice in power, or performance. The only thing you’d be losing is HDD space, which, depending on your situation, is negligible.

That’s interesting… because I can very easily upgrade HDDs, I figure I’ll get a big SSD because it’s around $140 savings from that size and I’ve been advised to get was around 120 and from there the difference in price from 128GB to 240GB is $40. As for the HDDs, I gotta look those prices up.

In short: Gotta think about it but thanks.

No problem. I updated my post a bit with some other suggestions, but that’s all they are. Suggestions.

I’m gonna stick with my power supply, because if there’s one thing where I’m willing to pay a little more it’s the thing that powers everything.

The fan? See PSU.

My SSD SEEMS to have more good reviews than bad on Amazon but I don’t wanna risk it if it’s the thing I’m putting Windows on…

I’m thinking of caving and getting a smaller HDD but it’s literally 50 bucks less for a loss of 1.5 TB, then again the reviews weren’t amazing for the one I had either.

Update: god dammit I’m wishy washy! And I can’t find a damn Sony card reader!

Update to my update:

I’ve decided that I really only need to sort out 5 things at this point

SSD

HDD

Card Reader

Which case to get

That weird jelly you use to put the fan on the CPU.

Thermal paste.

BINGO!

I don’t know much about memory, I was just looking at price and how much memory it had. This is gonna be a real time killer!

EDIT: We have lift-off

The new HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136793

Good choice on the HDD. Quick, and reliable. As for RAM, the corsair you have picked out is fast, reliable, and pretty decently priced. I say stick with it.

I wasn’t referring to RAM but great to know I made a good choice! Thanks man!

My SSD choice: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004W2JLB6/?tag=pcpapi-20

Crucial and OCZ make the best SSDs at the moment. Good choice.

Hello there my sweet sweet child, time to be inserted!!!

That CPU cooler is slick. I’ve never seen one actually in use before. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m mobile so I can’t post the link but you’ve been super helpful so I thought I’d let you know I finalized everything made some changes. I’m not entirely sure when you looked at it last but the RAM won’t fit with the fans so I got 2 8 gig pieces instead. Same price and more future proof.

What fans? The CPU cooler? Either way, 2 8g sticks should have been around the same price and leaves you some room to upgrade later.

Yeah the cooler. I’m not hip to the lingo yet.

So if found this. http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=10530BD1827&vpn=EAH5450 SL/DI/512MD3/MG(LP)&manufacture=ASUS

If I bought two of these and crossfired them, would I get an increase in performance over my current gpu which is an ATI Radeon x1950? According to videocardbenchmark.net, the 5450 by itself doesn’t beat the x1950. But how would it fare crossfired? Or are they not crossfire compatible?
