The Official PC/Computer Thread

I looked into those, but for a majority of Intel ITX motherboards, those big coolers will block the PCI-e slot which I need for a capture card. Most of the layouts have the Northbridge heatsink on top, forcing the CPU location near the PCI-e slot.

Doh, I think I found my match!

Amazon has the Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA3 HDD’s for $99 shipped right now. I have used several of these and they are great. This is the lowest price I have seen them sold for in a very long time…

Finally got the Sager.

After months of fighting my old pc i finally figured out the problem!! MY heatsink was clogged with dust!! i feel so stupid after cleaning every part i never figured my heatsink would be the issue. Sadly when i tought it all was good but, i ran into another issue my ram went out. Any good relieble site where i can find a ddr2 pc2/4200 stick i’ve tried newegg and amazon but ill i can find is pc2/5300 >_<

So it begins…

After building my brother’s el chepo computer, I’m ready to start my project. I’m looking for the strong, silent type, so I want a computer that can kick ass, stay silent, and possibly stay under $1500 once all is said and done. To that end I’ve been looking at a lot of quiet components. Trying to gauge how you guys feel about tthese.

First off, Anybody had any experience with a fanless PSU? Seasonic has a few of them, like this:

http://www.seasonicusa.com/NEW_X-series_Fanless.htm

The 460 is what I’m eying, as I’m not going to have a super powerful GPU (more on that later) or serious overclock that needs to keep cool. That said, they (and Kingwin) have a few hybrid PSUs that will cut the fan if not needed. So, I still get silence, but a bit more power. What say you guys, or any alternate suggestions?

Same with the GPU. Since I’m not a PC gamer at the moment, and don’t play any FPS or have a monster screen (probably upgrade to a 23" or less for the build) realistically I don’t need a GTX680 or anything close to it. Silence is golden for me. My original thought was a Sapphire 7750 Ultimate:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102980

Now, if I need a bit more I could wait for their fanless 7770 to drop, but realistically either would probably be more than I need at this point (or any point in the immediate future). Good idea, or am I being stupid for stupid’s sake?

I’ve bumped my Fractal Define mini for the R4. It’s a bit bigger, and it comes with a window. May as well show off a bit, right? I haven’t quite settled on cooler yet, or a mobo, but the basics are pretty much set (at least 8gb memory, i3570k, Samsung 128GB SSD, at least 1TB data drive). I initially looked at an AsRock mobo, but may go Gigabite. I respect Asus, but my current setup and my brother’s setup did have a few driver issues to sort out. Again, suggestions are always welcome.

I think you’ll be very pleased if you pick up that hardware. I’m not big on fanless stuff, but if you are going for silence then you should be happy.

I personally would wait for the fanless 7770 and run on integrated GFX if you are patient, as it’s always nice to prep for the future should you choose to start gaming, but if you are certain that will not change, the 7750 should be fine.

As for motherboards… I don’t know a ton about Intel motherboard as I’ve always been an AMD guy, but their offerings have been lacking as of late, so I’ve done some research. I’ve always bought ASUS motherboards as they were always well praised, but right now I’ve seen a lot about Gigabyte, so I’d personally buy one of their boards just to see what all the hype is all about(I actually intend to do this when I rebuild my rig). Gigabyte looks to be a great contender and many people claim them to be the best, so I wouldn’t be too concerned about it, just buy what feels right to you.

Hey guys, I’m planning to spend around 1k-1.3k to build a new computer. Here for some suggestions cause I’m tech retarded.

I’m looking for a gaming PC with enough specs to run sony vegas 11 smoothly (for youtube) and newer games on a high setting, and not get too hot/loud during gaming sessions as that’s one of the problems I currently have with my laptop. Also it’d be nice if it came with frontal usb ports, and all the necessary outlets for headphones, etc.

I’m not too familiar with computers, but I’m assuming I will need 8+gb of ram, a good processor and video card for vegas + games?

Also, where are the cheapest places to purchase parts from? I’m from Canada, so I could always use NCIX but I’m assuming they’re not as competitively priced as others like newegg.com. I have a PO BOX in the states so I can always use US online retailers and drive down to pick them up.

Thanks in advance.

Canadian retailers can’t compete with American retailers. Microcenter and Newegg are just too good. That said, Microcenter sells their stuff cheap in-store and their online deals aren’t as great (but still competitive with Newegg).

That said, weirdly enough, Canada still gets video cards at good prices. I would recommend NCIX or Canada Computers. Newegg.ca is decent too, if they have free shipping.

You’re tech retarded but are you willing to build a computer yourself? Or do you have a pocket technician who can build for you?

I was thinking that I’d follow some guides online and try to build it myself, if that doesn’t work, I could always ask a few friends to come help me build it.

From what I have read, you need a top-mounted facing up PSU mount on your case so that the heat escapes easy. I have been looking at the Silverstone TJ08-E for quite a while just for the X-400 fanless setup. Silverstone has a couple other bizarre cases that have the I/O part of the motherboard facing up, which also puts the PSU on top, perfect placement for a fanless PSU. Seasonic does offer a hybrid silent PSU, still from the X series, available at 560w lowest. Since you have a case that accommodates bottom-mounted PSU, I would probably advise you go with a fanned PSU. I got a really good load of information from SPCR: http://www.silentpcreview.com/fanless-psu-build-guide

I was really thinking of a similar setup you’ve just mentioned above, and with a Define Mini. But I just have a tight budget constraint, so I’ll have to make do with a relatively old-fashioned case, the Silverstone PS01 (good ol’ top mounted PSU). I might scrounge up enough to get the Seasonic X Series 560W. To reduce the noise even more, I plan to:

  1. Downgrade the I7-2600 to an i3-2120
  2. Downgrade the GTX 560 to a silent HD 7750
  3. Suspend the HDDs
  4. Get an aftermarket air CPU cooler.

The midtower is gonna become my HTPC/development/browsing PC. I plan to transport the i7 and GTX 560 into a mini-ITX case to make a small and possibly portable LAN party midrange gaming PC. Still having headaches choosing the damn ITX case.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I had glanced at a few items on SPCR, but never really anything in-depth, so I missed the fanless PSU article (but I did find out about the fanless Seasonic from there). Since the R4 has the PSU on the bottom, I’ll just go for one of their hybrid designs (or just read up some more and see what my options are). I love the idea of the fanless PSU, but probably not enough to swap the R4 for it.

After being on the fence I think I will take the advice and wait on the Sapphire 7770. May as well future proof to the extent I can. I’ll do some more reading on mobos before heading down to Microcenter, or see what deals they have on what combos and decide what the best mobo for the money would be. It seems if I’m not cramming multiple GPUs or doing serious overclocks it doesn’t matter that much and comes down to brans support or number of SATA and USB 3.0 ports each board has.

As an aside, I don’t see very many boards with an IDE connector anymore. Just as well, as most people have gone with SATA these days, and with good reason. Thing is, I’ve still got a few IDE drives I need to either use or just grab the data off them and recycle them (which in all honesty I’ll probably end up doing). I’ve seen IDE to SATA converter boards that plug in the back of the hard drive; I may get one or two just to hook the drive up and toss everything to my server (and my server issues are another story for another post)

I’m considering switching out the video card listed above for this one since people have cited that the other card gets really hot. Any thoughts or noticeable problems with this build?

Okay guys, updated the first post again. Let’s make that first post as comprehensive as possible. Shoot me a PM if anything needs to be added.

The 570s will run hot regardless of series unless you get a Twin Frozor, but the chip itself will generate a ton of heat. I’d see if you can scrape up a bit of cash for a 600 series card, it should run cooler and performance should be similar, if not better.

The gtx 660 ti is supposed to be released in the near future and should perform better than the 570 at a similar price point(I believe it’s expected to be around $300).

I might consider upgrading the gpu later but the case should have enough ventilation for now, I really just want to get my hands on it.

What are some of the specs to look for in a PSU? Since I’m from Canada, I might end up ordering the parts from Canadian retailers to avoid the duty at the border, is this a viable alternative? Currently on sale at NCIX.

Just ordered a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H motherboard, an Intel i5 3570k, 8gb of 1600mhz DDR3 ram, an OCZ Vertex 4 SSD and Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I’m done with AMD’s shenanigans as of today they lost me on Bulldozer, but I decided to wait it out and see if anything good would happen before I switched to intel. I got impatient, and now I guess I’m an Intel guy again, which certainly isn’t a good . I’ll hopefully have these components by Saturday if all goes well. As soon as the GTX 670 dips in price, I’m probably going to pick one up. I can get by with my Nvidia 8800gt for a few more months before I go insane.

The Intel Ivy bridge chips have pretty decent integrated graphics that should be enough to hold you off, and the 660 is expected in the very near future, I’d order everything but the GPU and wait. The gtx 660 will perform much better at around the same price. But, it is your money, so do what you please.

Yeah on second thought I might do that, asked around a few other guys and they said the same thing. The only downside besides waiting is that the 660 ti will probably be $300+ while I’m getting the gtx 570 for $230 after $20 MIR.

Ordered the 570 already but I guess I can alway cancel the order since it is a pick up order.

Tell me how you like hat Gigabyte board. Still going back and forth on the mobo before I start making my purchases. I’ll probably get the case and PSU from NEwEgg if they have a R4 bundle (even if not they seem to be one of the few places that carry the windowed R4). Why did you go with the OCZ over, say the Samsung 830?

I’ll let everybody know what I think of it. Motherboard was actually hard to chose, I’ve always sworn by ASUS and I finally decided to see what all the Gigabyte hype was about. I’ve heard good things and that’s why I decided to try their product, and if all goes well you will be hearing positives from me.

As for the OCZ SSD? I chose it over the samsung because the OCZ purchased Indilinx and the vertex 4 is among the models that use an Indilinx Everest 2 controller(which is actually a marvell with custom firmware). I am sure samsung makes good SSD’s, but the price differential was too great for what I decided to be a relatively small improvement. Samsung uses their own chipset which provides for faster speeds at a greater expense to the consumer.
