The Official PC/Computer Thread

My computer is hella old. I unscrewed my cpu fan/heatsink and it wont screw in anymore. Possibly the backplate got misaligned and I have to unscrew the mobo to reattach it? Since it doesnt run with the usual intel pins.

Also is it better just to get an i5 than an 8 core? Because I am thinking of going with amd, but I am not sure.

Also I am looking to build a new rig for roughly 500-600.
I currently have a spare hdd/psu/video card so those can be factored out from the cost. My goal is for light gaming, no ultra settings or any of that nature.

Yeah, you will have to remove the mobo.

The current gen i5s dominate anything AMD has. However, the AMD 8 cores are still good. I’d rather spend 20 extra bucks and get an i5 though.

Hell, I’d go with an i3-2100 than anything AMD at this point.

You are absolutely correct. It’s worth the little extra to pick up an i5.

I have been a long time AMD user, and when I rebuild my PC in August, I am going with Intel. The 3570K looks too good to pass up. Right now I think it’s a poor decision to do anything else(although Piledriver could prove me wrong, but I’m doubtful).

Lets hope Piledriver isn’t terrible.

Not that Bulldozer is terrible, but you know what I mean.

The backplate was loose, so I corrected it thanks.

Looking for feedback on this build.

I am going to opt for a GTX 570, but that is just a place holder for now.

I am getting one, too.

But I’ll forego the 7970 - because I do not want to wait for the backlog.

Sager got a HUGE batch of defective 7970s…

I can live with a 670 with lower power consumption, Optimus, and drivers, regardless of not being Keplar, I think.

My only hang up is whether to stick with the mechanical 750 for files (art) and an 80 gig mSATA II SSD for an OS drive, or else just get a 256 SATA III SSD, and eventually pop the optical drive out for another HD.

Hello… I don’t know If this is the right place to post this but I thought it’d be worth a shot:
So I bought a laptop here in Japan has Windows Home Premium OA instaled and a key on the bottom. The OS language is Japanese, can I use an English install of the Same OS at all? :]

If i was you i would get the core i5-2500 once you get that it’s all good for ya cpu and also i would do my home work if i was you on that Geforce they do get hot when you put them in sli and they use more power. i got 2 6870, but to keep them cool i have a dragon rider case that has a huge quite fan and i put 2 more in them and i can’t hear a sound. From the looks of it ya build looks good just make sure every thing is compatible with ya mother board or you’ll be shit out of luck.

Alright that sounds good. They should all be compatible, if not Ill just buy a pre-built. Im not looking to play BF3 on my pc. Maybe PSO2 that’s about it.

So what speakers do people use with their monitors? My monitor I’m ordering has built in speakers but those generally suck ass so any quality speakers?

I love my Logitech Z-2300’s, but the best I’ve ever had were the Logitech Z-5500’s. The subwoofer in that set was freaking amazing…
I bought the Logitech Z-523 2.1 set for my mom and they sound pretty decent for the price.

I actually got the Z623 already. Which is better. The Z2300 has almost 1000 5 stars on Amazon and Z623 has no ratings and is 50 dollars more expensive. It hasn’t been shipped yet

Klipsch 2.1 are the best speakers for a standard desktop rig.

I have a pair of 2.0 Bose for my Evo Asus.

The only reasons I bother with speakers for it are ease of volume control, and the headphone jack being closer to me.

You can definitely get more power out of intel CPUs right now, but you just can’t beat the value of the AMD bundles sold at places like Microcenter. For instance, when my younger brother’s PC died, we set him up with 4gb of ram, an AMD 960T, and motherboard for just over $100. Can’t be that for anyone not needing to run 8 instances of crysis at 70000x19500 resolution.

Of course, this statement will be obsolete within 30 seconds of me typing it.

So I have been looking into low profile aftermarket CPU coolers. The two coolers I’m looking for have something in common: 1) fans secured by clipping it to the heatsink, and 2) 15mm fans (common being 25mm).

http://www.xigmatek.com/product.php?productid=136&type=photo - Xigmatek Praeton LD964 (92mm fan)

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1417&ID=1966 - Thermaltake Slim X3 (80mm fan)

Question: Is it safe to replace the included fan with the more commmon 25mm thick fans?

dayum! S series. i only gots E series coz i’m ghet-to.
i’m jealous.
Sony Vaio kicks ass man. that pc can last you…like forever. Sony makes one of the more reliable pcs out there. their pcs are geared for entertainment type shit like games and movies. so for gaming i’d say you are set with that pc you done got there son.

What’s your max budget?
Do they have to be 92mm or 80mm? If you can do 120mm or 140mm you should go with that instead. Usually much quieter while moving the same or more air.
Something like the Scythe Big Shuriken 2 uses a 120mm low profile fan. Pretty sure the Scythe Big Shuriken 1 has the crappy plastic mounting pins that the intel stock heatsink uses so you don’t want that one.
The Noctua NH-L12 is probably the very best low profile cooler but it’s very expensive (~$60+). If you need the absolute best then this is one of those to get.
The two that you listed seem to have mounting clips for low profile fans and they mount on the top holes, which means that the fan can only be replaced with a low profile one unless they sell/give you mounting fins for regular height fans.
The Scythe Shuriken 2 has mounting clips mount on standard 120mm holes on the bottom (as opposed to the top), you would be able to swap it with a standard sized fan if you want unless I’m not seeing it right.

Well I haven’t gotten it yet, but I’ve been deliberating between that and a gaming desktop that might just cost me a pretty penny. Actually, I kinda wanted a W series from Lenovo since those things indestructible, but they only come with DVD burners and not Blu-Ray and I don’t know about their video cards. Any thoughts?

So I ended up having to build a computer for my brother, since his 8 yer old Compaq died on him (my guess is the PSU is dead). His only specification: Cheap with blue lights (he’s not technical at all). So a quick stop at Microcenter netted him this:

Phenom II X4 965 Black
Asus M5A97 mobo
8GB DDR3-1333
Eagle Technologies 600w PSU
Thermaltake V# Black Edition midtower
Samsung OEM DVD writer
Generic SD card reader

I had a spare 320 GB HDD laying around, which I formatted and installed Win7 Ultimate. The case, while this, is serviceable and came with a blue light fan. I got him another 120mm fan for the front of the case, and the Eagle PSU, along with having (non-modular) sleeved cables also has a blue LED fan. Initial price out: $330. However, between being tired and slightly inebriated, I didn’t look to see if the mobo had onboard graphics, which it didn’t. So, a trip to BestBuy netted a cheap Galaxy GT 610. Since I still had tek-flex from my stick builds I went on and covered the fan and auxiliary case cables and bundled everything the best could. For around $400 he should be fine for a while, and I have experience for my personal build later this year
