The Official PC/Computer Thread

My notebook battery is no longer holding a charge does anyone know where I can get a new one? The model is Asus K52F series.

Just looked on Amazon and saw some going for $35 which has me wondering if they’re good since I’m not seeing any reviews.

Obligatory new hardware update.

The GTX 670 is now out and available. It is very well spec’ed, and has been seen to do better than the GTX 680 in some names. Not to mention it’s relatively small 9.5" footprint. Even smaller if it’s the reference PCB. There are also long cards as well(that share the 680 PCB, such as Gigabyte). I’m going to wait for the first price drop on the EVGA 670, but I’ll probably be picking up the superclocked model(unless a classified version is released before then). For $400, it’s looking to be a very excellent card.

Just picked up an i7 3770k, and GTX 680.

Kind of freaked out when I put the i7 in and it wouldn’t boot. Updated my BIOS and it was all good. Whew.

Also, what do you guys use for antivirus?

Yeah, that sort of boot failure sucks. If you buy hardware that you need a BIOS update to use, and you don’t have hardware to boot it while you update it, you can get screwed over and have to buy another processor just to update the BIOS.

For Antivirus, I use avast free, but I don’t use my PC for much other than gaming.

I’m using Microsoft Security Essentials and love it!

been using AVG (free) for years… havent had a single virus issue, ever.

My raid array (os) crashed last week, got a mushkin ssd and WOW… its fast… like stupid fast!

Here’s a system I put together from mostly spare parts. I’m giving it to a buddy of mine that needed something for basic internet use. I wanted it to have a black/red theme. I added a 120mm Cooler Master fan w/ red LED’s behind the front mesh. Overall, the system is very solid & does everything it was intended to do quite well.

Here are its specs:

Cooler Master Elite 311 Mid-Tower Case
Antec VP-450 Power Supply
Intel Pentium E2180 2.0 GHz Dual-Core Processor w/ Cooler Master CPU Cooler
Biostar G41 HD Motherboard
2GB G.Skill DDR3 1333 System RAM
500GB Western Digital Caviar SE 16 SATA2 Hard Drive
2 Dual-Layer SATA DVD Burners (1 w/ Lightscribe)
Multi-Card Reader
Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000
Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000
Windows 7

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. My friend ordered a 19" ASUS VW193TR LCD monitor & Belkin surge suppressor to complete the package. Here are a few pics:

Thanks for looking!

Why is the cpu cooler crooked? O.o

It’s not. It’s the way this particular model was designed…

Figured I should go ahead and post my recent build.

[details=Spoiler]Here is my new Yorkie, Lucca for a size comparison.

All of the cables route through the top. Pretty awesome case. Its extremely quiet, overclocking the GTX 680 is ridiculously easy, and the 3770k is just bananas. I haven’t OC’d it.

As much as I love the possible performance improvement of Inverted ATX, I dislike the appearance of all the video cables coming from the top. It looks messy, IMO. The lid probably makes it look much more tolerable, though I still wouldn’t want to have to remove it to play with cables. The case looks pretty fun to casemod though as it has a fairly square footprint.

You actually can’t see any of the cables. I really need to get this case painted though. I hate the color.

So i need advice.
on Tuesday night my laptop overheated found out one of the fans was not spinning so i used a can of air and blew some air and now it spins again so i started disassembling my laptop and worked my way to fan (for the first time) and i took a pic

and i took a pic of the other piece sorry for the blurriness

and now i want to ask is this still good, i don’t need to replace it at all?

If it’s still spinning then its still good.

It sounds like a dust bunny may have just clogged it.

It’s not that bad, but yeah, I’d say it could use some paint. Make it look like the tardis.

Out of curiosity, how is the Kuhler treating you? For the minimal space it seems excellent, but does it really do better than any of the high end air coolers?

Given that Ivy runs pretty hot, and I just got it, I don’t really have anything to compare it to. It runs about 35-45c. I only have one fan on this radiator though.

I’m in the process of putting together my first gaming PC and I cannot for the life of me decide on a hard drive… It seems like every model on the market has a ridiculously high failure rate (based on newegg reviews). What 1tb hard drive would you guys suggest? As for the rest of the computer, this is what I’ve picked out:

motherboard: Asus Sabertooth Z77 LGA 1155
processor: i5-2500 Sandy Bridge
memory: G.SKILL Sniper Series 8gb
gpu: EVGA GeForce gtx 560
Corsair Force Series GT SSD
psu: SeaSonic M12II 620w

Any and all suggestions appreciated

Your Build looks nice. I’d try to get a 600 series gfx card right now, or a slightly better card, but it should suit you just fine. You may also want some more power, that PSU is great for what you have, but if you have to upgrade you don’t want to have to pay for another one if you’re getting some more power hungry components.

Now then, as for HDD’s, the failure rate is high because Newegg doesn’t pack them that well, granted Tiger Direct doesn’t really pack them well either… They get knocked up a bit in shipping, but it’s not too bad. My advice for you, try to refrain from putting something really important on it until you’ve tested it out for a bit and make sure it works.I’d give it a week or two. However, as you probably already have another PC for basic purposes, you may as well install a few downloadable games on a new HDD so they can be redownloaded if the new drive dies on you. Be prepared to go through a few RMA’s, regardless of what you buy. I prefer seagate at the moment as they have better write and read speeds, especially on the large sizes, and I’d recommend a 2TB drive.

I have used several of these and have had zero issues:

It has a 5 year warranty too!
Nice specs! Good luck!

I was literally looking at that exact model and then you posted this… It must be a sign. Thanks for the advice guys
