The Official PC/Computer Thread

That’s why I carry Fractal Design, and soon to be Silverstone cases.

One of the reasons why I chose the Corsair 500r as a chassis was because it looked professional-esque without having any form of outwardly extreme design. Simple and efficent but still visually appealing, standing out from a standard run-of-the-mill tower while not being so outwardly advertising that its a gaming computer
Am planning on switching out the stock fans for some red LED ones soon

The GTX 690 looks like a BEAST!
I’m still gonna hold off on upgrading for a while…

If I were you, I would buy two 680s. I bet they would perform and OC better, and for the same price it makes sense, but maybe Nvidia knows something I don’t. My next upgrade will probably be a 570 regardless, as I wanted something better than the 560 that I could reasonably justify the cost of. However, I just applied for a decently paying job, so I may get to overhaul some components sooner than expected if all goes well.

$1K for the GTX 690 is WAY out of my price range, as is 2 GTX 680’s. The most I’ve ever spent on a GPU was $600 for the 8800GTX many years ago. After that, I upgraded to the GTX 285 for $350. I’m running a GTX 480 I got for free from Amazon at the moment.

How does this happen?

Cost is difficult for most people, as is for me, which is why I’m looking at the GTX 570. I either want the EVGA Classified or the EVGA DS model, but I don’t know which one I will be able to push farther. It doesn’t matter as I can’t afford either at the moment, but I should have the cash in the coming months.

Well, I originally did pay for it, but when I received the package, the retail box was all banged up from the lack of packaging material. I called to complain of it, and to also give them some feedback on it. The representative then told me she was sending out a replacement card, and to keep the card I already had. I assured her that the card I received was in full working order, and that I would return the order for the replacement. She told me that it was not necessary. I was in complete disbelief…LMAO! I kept the one I already had and sold the new one when it arrived, along with the GTX 285, so I actually made some money off the transactions. Funny thing is that the 2nd card was also packaged just as poorly as the first one…LoL!

I am thinking I need a new case, something that allows for better cable management, or I need to learn cable management

I can possibly help with this. Do you have any preference to size(full tower vs. mid tower) or design? Maybe a color scheme? Knowing the case you have now would also really help.

A question for me to everybody else. I am looking to potentially purchase a GTX 570 in the future. I’m definitely buying from EVGA(lifetime warranty on many products). I’m probably going to overclock them anyway, so do I want the GTX 570 Classified, or the GTX 570 DS model? The classified comes factory OC’d, but I bet the DS will get better temps at the same clocks due to the dual fans.

I highly recommend the cases from NZXT. Their full-tower and mid-tower Phantom series cases are absolutely amazing for cable management. They are very reasonably priced and look stunning!

I would get the DS version and find your own sweet spot for overclocking. Their Precision X software is very nice too. EVGA currently has a $20 MIR for it on their site, so it comes out to $289. That is a great price on a great card!

I’ve got to wait a bit anyway. I’d purchase the -AR version instead(a bit more, but comes with a lifetime warranty). As long as I don’t flash the bios on it I should be fine. I was thinking I’d get the DS version due to potentially better airflow, but I’m not sure. The only downside is that EVGA doesn’t make a backplate for it(it’s a non-reference board)… that’s why I was thinking of getting the classified model.

Ah, I didn’t know that. It’s definitely worth it then.

I ended picking up an i5-3570k, ASRock Z77 Pro4, G.Skill Sniper 8GB (4GB x 2) and a Corsair 550D for $472 this weekend (tax included). Still undecided on the CPU cooler but probably going for the Hyper 212 EVO since apparently that’s been getting better results (around 9 degrees Celsius cooler) than the regular version.
I was going to skip Ivy Bridge due to the temperature issues and such but I said fuck it and jumped on that MicroCenter deal.
Haven’t put it yet since I am waiting for my RAM to get here (ordered this from NewEgg) and I still need to back up my stuff before doing a clean install.
I’ll be getting the rest of the machine probably late this year or early next when the next batch of GPUs hit. GTX460 should last until then, but definitely going for the best $300-400 GPU when I upgrade.

Newegg has the EVGA GTX 580 for sale for $400 right now. It’s a pretty good deal, but if you can hold out you may be able to get a GTX 680 for that much.

Well, it’s not a matter of being able to hold out or not. I only have $8 right now to spend so I have to save up again .
The GTX670 is supposed to be coming out soon for $400 (GTX x70 cards normally launch for $350 MSRP) so I hope it’s on par with the GTX 580 to justify the higher price point.

Beautiful!
The 690’s are out now too.

With two kids and a house. I think i will have to live with my 2x 295s for a little longer… …but i do feel 400 numbers behind now

How good is techflex when it comes to sleeving individual PSU cables? I want to do it whenever I can afford a fully modular PSU and I want to know if techflex will work well as I want to theme my entire build in black and green. I don’t like the UV extensions some sites sell, and they are not the best in quality(heatshrink pieces are way too long) so that isn’t an option.

Edit:
It appears the GTX 670 spec has leaked.

It is a very small card, so I won’t be buying one. I bought a full tower for the intent of holding a Large GFX card, so buying this would merely cause my midtower friends to laugh at me.

Yes tech flex is awesome for PSU cables. You have to get a tool to undo pins to work the tubing over the wiring, most sites that offer tech flex offers the pin tool as well. Unless you get the split material that fastens in the middle with Velcro. Spiral wrap is another consideration.

Installation of components on a Corsair 550D = Easiest thing ever. Never had such a smooth installation before .
