The Official Luffy Support Thread

Phh. Luffy you got this.
Like I mentioned before, I think Rose has the same option select that Guile does for Rufus dive kick throw setups. The only problem is that it can be baited and/or beaten by ex messiah kick. As seen here…

I’ve heard the Rose/Rufus match is 5-5 now. Can’t remember where I heard that, but Rufus definitely can be beat. When he doesn’t have meter, he’s a pushover on wake-up. Just can’t be afraid to attack him with all you’ve got.

theres no way the rufus rose match is 5-5 lol. you cant fireball safely and cant play footsies. even if rufus has no meter, not like youre really going to make him pay for it, lol, frame traps do not equal guaranteed damage

I’m not sure what scenario you have in mind that prevents Rose from throwing fireballs or playing footsies. You mean after Rufus gets U2? Yeah it can be pretty bad when those main options get taken away. Gotta switch gears to feints and light pokes, and waiting for Rufus to do something higher risk, or at least airborne. Not like Justin would do that, but he’s probably just waiting for an opportunity to use U2 because it’s good enough to wait for…

rose fireballs are laggy as shit. rufus can punish those from 3/4ths of the screen away if he reads the fireball properly. just saying its not worth it in the long run. and yeah then theres u2 to deal with too. throw fireballs at rufus just giving him free ultra lol

vs Rufus is atleast 7-3 in his favor.

Yeah I learned long ago not to rely on her fireballs in that match-up, or in general from too close of a distance. Sure they do good damage, but good players can avoid them and punish you for it easily. As I’ve mained Rose for over a year now, I’ve adopted the stance that if the character you’re playing against doesn’t have a fireball, you should play more as if you don’t have one either (unless it’s Zangief). There are few matches I’ve played where I can say “fireballs got me the win”. They’re more supplemental than elemental

That fireball theory is very false “play as if you don’t have one”.

Fireballs vs Honda? yes.

Fireballs vs Makoto? yes

Fireballs vs Bison? Sure.

Fireballs vs Balrog? Yes.

Fireballs v Gen ? Yes.

Fireballs vs Fei Long? Sure.

I know there are a few more, but fireballs are very good tools vs a lot of these characters. The only unsafe is probably Abel. 200 damage for a wrong guessed fireball? gg.

EDIT: all moves rose has are supplemental to game play.

I can’t think of one match up where you wouldn’t use a specific move.

mmmm don’t misquote me. I said “play MORE as if you don’t have one”. A lot of characters have ways of bypassing fireballs, so I prefer not to get caught. It is good to incorporate them either when it’s more than safe to use, or when you anticipate it would take the other player by surprise. But just imagine: you’re fighting Mak, she’s at full screen, you shoot a fireball, she focus absorbs it, dashes forward, then jumps your next fireball, landing on you. That would quickly turn the tide all because of a simple lack of judgment.

So yeah, use fireballs, but consider the consequences and stay vigilant.

You got some bad intel. You can semi-abuse his wakeup without meter…he can abuse yours all day.

Well, imo it’s for rufus favor. And like Metroxylon, i dont rely on fireball in that matchup. we’ll see.

@ Saqs — Does cr. mk beat a lot of Rufus’s wake up options?

@ Metroxylon — Obviously it depends on the situation. The fireball is still there no matter what the moment.

@ Luffy — I would use fireballs, but not super laggy light punch slow spark. Use medium punch or heavy punch fireball as some bait. Then, if he proceeds to jump in at you and you can see it U1 or standing far heavy punch or cr. hp, depending on the range.

SF. HP is super effective in this match up. So our the other types of fireballs that you have. You guys act as if Rose only has one fireball :nono:. Rose’s other fireballs can be used to zone out characters that will usually zone out SLOW spark.

Yeah it does but like Arturo said it doesnt equal guranteed damage. Its definitely an essential tool to use on his wake up tho. Metered or not.

About fireballs, Rose can throw a HP spark and then focus cancel it on reaction if she sees that the opponent is jumping over it or doing something to punish. Not super-useful, but sometimes this can give you the chance to throw a surprise fireball against opponents who can usually punish it, and in the worst case you are just wasting meter instead of health.
Maybe you can even do it with mp spark if you have fast reaction times

Keep up the good work Luffy!

Rose is a great character to watch play, and I’m glad Europe is getting more attention. SF will hopefully become a a more even game worldwide, not just Japan #1 and USA a distant #2.

Oh the irony of what you said. The massive start-up and quick recovery on HP spark has proven to me that it’s very good for canceling into super. Try it in training mode. Set Rose as the dummy, record HP Spark xx LP Super. Then try jumping the fireball when you see it come out.

By the way, the only sparks worth FADC’ing are LP and MP in my opinion. If a person catches your HP Spark attempt, it’s most likely going to be during the start-up, or sometime before you would be able to FADC the last bit of frames anyway. Really when considering FADC, HP Spark is the least worth it.

Edit: Sorry if we’re perceived as derailing this thread, Luffy. You rock. A win for you is a win for us, so let this thread double for Rose strategy discussion. :karate:

I’m the only Rose player in Belgium at the moment, but when I look at he European Battle Poiints list, almost half of the Rose players are French, and higher ranked
Pretty sure this can be called the Louffy-effect.

Shots fired…

So Justin said on alphaism stream if he plays Luffy he’ll get mauled.
How’s that for motivation…

Yeah, but it’s not as if Justin’s beat Daigo anytime recently… lol. Go Luffy. I say be really on point with your Option Selects (throw/C.HP and Safe Jump In to attack/orbs). You should probably just get a sparring parter to do dive kick/throw mixups on you for awhile, and learn the range of rufus’s pokes.
Training will help against Marn too.

haha, i got my poll:
