JET is hard as hell to get into. But yeah, make sure you aren’t putting all of your eggs in one basket. There are many other ALT programs in japan that aren’t JET. Also, being an ALT means you get shipped to super far places so be ready for that. Just nail the interviews and practice more japanese. you should do fine. Good luck
Are you going for JLPT4? if you need some review shizz i can provide you with that.
Reno - All imma say about that is “ugh”
does anyone from srkjapan have any funny ALT stories? like what kids put on there homework?
That’s kind of a hard question to try and answer. My knee-jerk reaction would be no there’s nothing…but I went to an SBO qualifier a few months ago in a small town outside of Osaka that happened to have 3-4 of the top 10 players there. That’s an SBO qual though, so maybe it was a special exception?
As long as you can make it to a big city, you should be good to go. I can’t possibly try and rattle off towns that are nearby, but what I can do is give you train line info. As long as you have a decent train station, you can go almost anywhere. Also, I don’t know anything about Tokyo so can’t really help there.
Also, it helps TREMENDOUSLY if the place where you do end up is an express stop, not a local one.
Kyoto
JR West
Kintetsu
Keihan
Hankyu
JR is arguably the worst. I lived in a town on Kintetsu, and had a friend who lived pretty much the next town over on JR. It took me 50 minutes to get to the heart of Kyoto city, and for him, 90. But JR does cover all areas even if it is funky. Kintetsu is good for south Kyoto, Keihan runs through Sanjo and Shijo (the entertainment/shopping district of Kyoto - also where you will find a-cho) and also goes into Osaka and connects to the subway. Hankyu runs from Shijo out of the city and into Osaka - goes to Umeda/Osaka Station, arguably the center of Osaka, so this is nice.
Transportation in north Kyoto is absymal at best.
Osaka
JR West
Keihan
Hankyu
Hanshin
Nankai
Hankyu also runs to Kobe, so its a pretty convenient line. So does Hanshin, although I don’t know much about it. Nankai goes up towards the port and out towards the airport. Not great for connecting to other lines, but if you live out there its good for getting back into Osaka.
If the main thing is just getting into a big city, I suggest you look by rail lines instead of geographically. Your city not having a train station, having a local station, or having an express station can make a lot of difference. Most of these lines have home pages in English, and if not I’m pretty sure there are listings on Wikipedia for them.
As I said before, I lived in a town that was about 50 minutes away from either Kyoto or Osaka. So that was wonderful. Going into one (usually Kyoto) was the norm on Friday or Saturday, but during the weekday it was kind of too much trouble. My first year on JET I actually didn’t really play any games, but after that I was lucky to have another JET in my town who enjoyed fighting games (Tekken and 3S…) so sometimes we’d play at my place or his during the weekdays. Weekends were, realistically, girlfriend time, but if I had a spare moment I could easily go play somewhere.
If you really want to come to Japan, I recommend getting in on JET (best method IMHO) and just familiarizing yourself with the country first. If you want to relocate for better proximity to whatever, you can do that better after being here and having a better idea of the layout/how things work. Not just for arcades, I think in general life is better if you get a place that has good transportation options.
Although, IIRC JET only does placings for prefectures and not specific regions? Unless something’s changed since I went through.
Nah. I got nothing.
Hey guys, I’m here in Tokyo and I didn’t know about this thread before. I’ve been here since July 1st and I’m staying until December 23rd. I’m up for meet-ups and the like, drinking, eating, playing (I mainly play SF4) or whatever. I go to school in Takadanobaba so I go to Big Box quite often after 5 pm, say hello if you see a really tall latin-looking (I’m actually Swedish) guy
Pantsu are indeed a man’s romance, if you happen to be a panty thief. :looney:
Just wanted to drop by and say this thread is win. I enjoyed reading the stories. One day whenever I do happen to visit Japan again, I’d like to meet you all.
Dude eso, i remember watching your pen spinning vids when i first started. thanks for that stuff. and small world lol. never thought i’d find another person that goes on USPB
Take the JET talk to a JET forum. It completely ruins this thread. Yeah, the thread has the ambiguous title of “The Official Japan Thread 2.0 “Nani?””. Even so, every single year people ask the same ALT/JET/English-teacher questions. Take that ish and go to Dave’s ESL Cafe or something. Or look up your questions in some other forums because I’m sure you question has been asked at least 10 times. Oh, here’s the best site for all your JET inquiries and worries. www.bigdaikon.com There.
P.S. Screw JET because now the majority of the ‘chosen ones’ will end up being elementary or middle school teachers so there goes your chance to oogle at high school girls (and bag one for post-graduation). R.I.P. overfunded JET.
wireless for 500yen…
incheon has free wireless, also i have to fill out forms to exchange $5 for yen…seriously…and then i get back some shitty little coins instead of bills?! man japan sucks balls, fuck this country, i’m glad i’m only here for 2 more hours.
so yeah…that’s pretty much it. later fellas!
YOU TAKE THAT BACK ASSHOLE
haha that’s funny though I never heard of a place that makes you fill out forms at a money exchange.
yeah man, this country sucks ass…the only good thing i’ve experienced so far is that the internet security guy let me through even though i didn’t have my boarding pass or itinerary for my connecting flight.
also i saw some “sochu” in the airport store for like 2200yen…i was like awesome until i realized that’s like $20 for some knock-off soju. how you gonna have the fake shit cost 10 times what the real shit costs?
Yo we are in Japan now. Hit us up if you’re in Shinjuku: 080-3573-5444
Yup. The service is called LIVEDOOR here in Japan. People are uploading torrents from me at 1MB/sec. Holla.
Nice, how is Japan treating you so far?
I’m getting back in Japan the 6th… SCOTT POPULAR, WE DOIN IT UP RIGHT NO HOMO.
First night was epic. haha. im just happy im not in jail right now.
After counting all the votes I got, it was tie between Shinjuku and Shibuya.
I decided to put my vote on Shinjuku cuz Shinjuku is closer to Tokyo Dome City where SBO is held.
I’m thinking about reserving Amataro cuz we can have private room if we have 10-15 people.
so far I got 6 including myself (myself,Reno,Scott Popular,Caliver,HeartNana,Azrael)
Anyone I’m missing?
Reno, you are meeting up with haunts, calipower and combofiend during sbo weekend right?
would they be interested?
Lol that’s the only thing i didn’t like about Japan… But to fix that all you gotta do is buy yourself a gansta ass coin purse… With flowers on in and shit…
