The Official Def Jam: Icon discussion thread

I saw nothing on this, so I’m sorry if it’s been brought up before.

Def Jam is back. With its third installment (barring Takeover), the Def Jam wrestler/fighter series is making an official leap into fighter territory. Now under the direction of Fight Night makers EA Chigago, Def Jam is looking a whole lot different. Kudo Tsunoda is cocky, and Im a little doubtful about all the stuff theyre trying to integrate. Im loving the concept overall though. Its coming out on the PS3 and Xbox in March of 2007.

Theres one central truth of this game which I could gather: Rap culture aint fucking around this time. Tsunodas injecting every aspect of the game with it.
The story mode follows you, an underground rapper, as you build a record label and start to rise up. Fights originate as a result of beefs with other labels and such. I think you create your own dude for this. It hasnt been verified, but it seems obvious. Time will tell.
This total immersion approach gives way to the games must-see unique aspect: backgrounds which vibrate and jam to the music. Almost everything in the background, including environmental hazards, jump to certain sounds in a song (like bass, hi-hat, snare, etc.). The gameplay has morphed as a result. Its not much about strength, power, and typical attributes anymore; using the environment is key. Theres a gameplay video and interviews with the developers at gametrailers below. Bear in mind, the gameplay video is just a demo. The final version is bound to be faster.

IGN has a preview with some info (no videos though). You can go online, and you can upload your own songs to play in the background. I dont know if thats offline too, but Im looking forward to it.

The gamespot page is okay, with a Kudo Tsunoda interview.

The game is looking nice to me right now, and I cant wait to play it. I still have some doubt though. This whole environment thing could make or break the game. Even if it works out and its cool, there may not be many environments or characters. Im liking the story concept, but it could still fall flat. Online might not work well if they really are using 100 percent of the PS3s power like they say they are. The rumor mill says there won’t be any blazin’ moves. I would still buy it, but that would take away a lot if it was true.
Either way, the quest to experience it might get a PS3 in my house before MGS4 hits.

Discuss.

i dunno about the controls tho, a mix of fight night?? hmmm…

Looks kinda busted to me, gameplay wise. Roll cancel, lol.

but thanks for sharing those links.

I don’t know if you can link directly to magazine scans or a thread with them. But if you type “Def Jam 3” into google, you won’t have to look far for the latest two features.

Moronic

All i know is Nas better be on DEf Jam 3!

Makes me sad seeing the wrestling system go. Its only reason I played that game.

Yeah. I’m anxious to try this new system, but the old one (especially FFNY) was just fine.
A complete rebuild wasn’t necessary.

Something tells me 50 cent is gonna be so broke.

yeah, trash.

would have been nice to just get a FFNY: next-gen.

Agreed. They should just leave everythin as is.Just add more fighting styles.

number 1 was a great wrestling game n i hoped number 2 wouldve been an extension of that, but sadly 2 just was a brawler wit no ring n ropes n just all out crazy finishers… they shouldve worked wit the wrestling engine n incorporated everything else aswell… n the 3rd is prolly going to go down the same path as 2

I agree as well…I enjoyed the grappling system and Blazin moves on FFNY.
For them to just take it out like that…not feelin it.
It’s like they are making Icon to be more like Fight Night.

It’s kind of like Fight Night in the graphics and the use of the second analog stick, but the second analog stick is used for directional attacks this time.

It’s weird to note that the time gap in between Fight Night rounds 2 & 3 and Def Jam 1 and 2 is one year. Considering the differences between sequels, that ups my faith about things.
