The Official Custom Arcade Sticks Thread II: A New Era of Builders

Most people seem to say 7/8" for the stick hole.

~Paik

Wow I didn’t even notice the difference between the two til I did a back and forth like 20 times…
Thanks.

What size wood and how deep should I rout out to mount the Jap stick on the top?

3/4" MDF works great for custom sticks. For top mount maybe 1/4" but I’m not 100% on that.

Probably the best joystick site I’ve seen yet. Their adapter solution is elegant and unique. Very detailed.

3/4" MDF is what most people seem to use. The depth of routing depends on a few things like if you want the actual authentic height on the joystick or if you like it a little longer or shorter and what size plexi/lexan you’re using.

For exactly if you’re going to put some 2mm lexan on top then you need to route out an additional 6mm for your mounting plate to rest on. If you’re using lexan that is a little thinner, adjust accordingly so that it’s 8mm total.* I believe this will leave your shaft at around 24mm above the lexan.

*Note: This is information provided to me by Per AKA TheRealNeoGeo when I asked the same question basically. I do not claim this information as my own.

I’ve just modded my Xarcade with happ parts, but some of the microswitched on the sticks seem to have a double click, where as others don’t. Are they faulty?

Al you have to do is check the ground wiring. Maybe sometimes when u hit the button, it touches the ground. Check the PCB wiring and the wiring on the switches.

I don’t quite understand. How could it be touching the ground?

I wish I would have posted here instead of starting a new topic … Anyway here’s my issue:

Edit:
N/M Ragnafrak answered my questions. I now know where the common ground is on the pcb for the buttons. The only thing I don’t know is why the original crappy joystick only used four cables. Is it possible to wire it without a ground? But if there’s 4 cables and no ground how is it getting power?

This is a pic of the stick. There’s only 4 wires that lead from the pcb to the micro switches on the stick. The colors are red, green, white, & black. I can’t figure out why there’s no ground though

Th only ground I know of is the one on the select and start buttons- I don’t see how its connected to the joystick though?

just so noone forgets me :lovin:

Hey I have a question and instead of making a new thread I though I could just ask it here. I have a Red Octane stick that I took apart and made it a DreamCast stick. Well I was thinking, would it be possible to make it a DC and PS2 stick by just running another set of wired from each cherry switch the the PS2 circuit board? Basically having 2 sets of wires from each cherry switch, one going to the DC circuit board and one going to the PS2 circuit board. I think it would work as long as both the DC and PS2 cord werent connected at the same time. Anyone have any input on this at all? Thanks.

Yes. Unfortunately the answer lies in the overwhelming older thread, detailed and very informative as it is about wiring 2 pcb’s, doing a search is your best bet.

BUMP

I’m getting my new workshop together. A lot of new sticks will come of it.

Check me out dawg XD

My only other question would be is how to tell which is the ground on those sanwa buttons:sweat:

DJ-VAN
On the buttons you can use whatever prong (think it is called that in english) for ground, doesn`t matter.

Nice overlays. That stick has a LOT of room inside… Good luck with the mod. You could put lexan on there if you really wanted. Just cut it to size and drill a few small holes through both and mount it with small machine screws. A bit more effort required but it could work.

Thanks for the info TheRealNeoGeo & NiteWalker that makes things a lot easier (though I’m gonna do vinyl because it’s easier than cutting lexan). I should be sending you my email order tonight. If I send the email today- I’d be getting the parts some time in April? You send shipments every two weeks right?

So just to make sure I got this right:

I send you an email with the stuff I’d like to order from you along with my address, then you send me an email back with a price for all of it including shipping and your paypal info (any choice in shipping btw)? Then when I get the email I send you the money to your paypal account in Yen (I’ll have to read how I switch payment types to Yen ). Then you post my info and shipping status on the site so I can see the progress of my order (very nice feature btw)?

Also I’d like to order those shaft covers and the extra grease but do I need them? You don’t have any prices for the grease but don’t all Sanwa sticks come with that stuff already on them? When would I need to apply grease? And what exactly does the shaft cover do? This stuff is all new to me…

Also when you make your graphics do you make them at actual resolution TheRealNeoGeo or do you resize them from a lower resolution to the correct one when printing?

DJ-VAN
These orders are closing in about 3min…

I was just wondering, does it matter which way the stick is mounted? as in, the plates/stick bases are wider one way.

So when you over your stick , is it wider, or taller (at the base)?
