Mine’s a TE as well, but I can’t imagine that has anything to do with the issue.
Thanks for your responses so far. You’ve definitely helped me to understand this mod.
All right, so what I mean is that I would attach a USB jack to the Imp. Then instead of switching out the entire USB cable that comes with the TE, I’d find another USB cable (cut, strip it) and solder the end of it to the wires I just cut off of the 360 PCB to this. So in essence I’m keeping the TE’s USB cable and giving it a new end. Instead of it being 4 wires that I solder into the Imp…it would be a USB B male end that I can plug into the USB jack I attached to the Imp. Does that make sense? I don’t want to install a wole new cable into the stick because I like the length and the breakaway aspects of it. So does this work and does the soldering of the wires together make for a good connection?
Hopefully that’s more clear
would hot glue from a glue gun damage the Cthulu board? or the imp, or the TE PCB itself?
I always see people hot glue their pcb. Toodles just said its difficult to burn your PCB with a soldering iron (unless you are dumb about it of course) and they are like 700 degrees lol. I think hot glue is s’all right.
okay, i’ve read thru the first post like about thrice yet i still am confused between the vanilla cthulhu, mc cthulhu and the imp.
hopefully someone can help me answer these few dual modding questions.
-
which board should i get for an xbox360 stick (madcatz te stick) to make it compatible with pc and ps3?
-
i have a ps3 madcatz se stick and i want to also dual mod it to work on the xbox360 and pc, what i need?
hopefully you all can help me answer the questions. thanks
hope so. cuz i plan to use the hot glue to hold it in place, and also hot glue every solder point (read somewhere that its a good soldering habit, keep the connection isolated and secure)
A bit. You should really only use the USB connector on the Imp in a full custom case. If you have a modded stick with an existing cord, like the TE, then don’t bother. Just desolder the cable from the 360 pcb, and solder those wires directly to the Imp.
You could do it like you describe, and somehow rig a B end to the existing cable and then plug it into a USB jack one the Imp, but really you’re not gaining anything for the extra work.
Nope.
PS3 Cthulhu: Talks PS3
MC Cthulhu: Talks PS3, Xbox, Gamecube, and PSX.
Imp: Allows one of two different USB devices to share a USB cable.
- Get a PS3 Cthulhu and an Imp, then follow Bomberman’s guide.
- A hacked common ground 360 MadCatz pad and an Imp. I dont immediately know if any tutorials to help with this though.
Maybe it isn’t worth the effort. I mean it’s not like the Imp would be fully detachable since its being soldered to the 360 and MC PCB. Twas just a creative thought I suppose. Thanks again.
Thanks for the help Toodles. I think I’ll do my first ever mod In a month or two when my TE warranty expires and nothing’s exploded.
was wondering if toodles or someone else could help me out
just finished the wiring to the cthulhu board and everything seems to work except
the 3p and 1k button. Double checked the wires/connections and everything seems secure. Could it be a problem with the pcb?
update: when i directly touch a wire to the IC pins on the board to the ground, the 3p/1k activate, however, when i touch a wire to where the circuit reaches the resistor network pins, they stop activating. the other buttons activate perfectly doing this method though.
could the problem be the resistors? esp where the 3p/1k is?
It’s certainly possible. Did you get the board preassembled or did you assemble it yourself?
The best thing to fully nail down the problem would require a multimeter. Check the resistance between:
- The 3p screw terminal and pin 26 on the chip. Should show almost 0 resistance.
- The 1k screw terminal and pin 25 on the chip. Should show almost 0 resistance.
- The 3p screw terminal and the VCC screw terminal. Should show about 10k ohm resistance.
- The 1k screw terminal and the VCC screw terminal. Should show about 10k ohm resistance.
Let me know what you find with those readings. A photo of both sides of the board would be very helpful, along with where and when you got the board, and whether it was purchased preassembled. We’ll get you straightened out. If you don’t have a multimeter, definitely get those photos and information to me.
Oh…my…lawd…The Imp board is SMALL. I thought it was going to be assembled but I suppose that’s not such a big deal. I’m just nervous now because I haven’t soldered in like 10 years lmao.
Is it easy to solder these Imps even though the holes are so close together?
And where do I solder the power lines coming from the Imp to the MC Cthulhu since the USB jack is there? Do I just heat up the bottom of it and attach it there with a little more solder?
O_O <-- frightened face.
Edit: How do you guys detach the USB cables from the TE PCB? cut or de-solder?
and is this good?

So I looked through Bomberman’s guide for the MC Cthulu + Imp.
A few questions:
- Which is easier to install: DPDT or Imp?
- How much soldering is actually required for the mod? I’ve never soldered, so I don’t know how to do it.
So what does it mean when your joystick only registers down and down-left?
O_O
all my buttons work.
Helpz meeee. Ill try to post pics in a bit.
The 30 gauge you have pictured should work fine. For detaching the USB cable from the TE pcb, I desolder. Unscrew the four screws, hold one of the wires between thumb and forefinger, apply iron with other hand to solder and pull the wire out.
- DPDT requires less soldering, but does require drilling in your case. It’s kind of a toss up, but if installing in a TE, I believe the Imp is easiest, since its made to go into a TE, so there is a bit more soldering, but no drilling or otherwise mounting the DPDT.
- If you can’t solder, you shouldn’t be doing this mod. Box it up, find a tech in trading outlet and pay a pro to do it for you.
You wired your stick wrong.
Toodles rocks our socks
-
IMP all the way…I’ve done both. Clean and classy.
On my TE I went DPDT only because I forgot to order an IMP board (sorry toodles).
Don’t go DPDT thinking your going to save yourself extra work or money ($5 at best). -
Well if you want to learn how to solder Slagcoin and youtube are your friends. Get some bread boards from Radioshack or some old motherboards for practice. But I wouldn’t advise this mod your 1st time out.
Hehe thank you for all your help toodles. You are the master of modifications.
The problem was…I had the jack backwards on the stick. FIXED!
Thank again.
I have a few more silly questions about the Cthulhu/Imp combo for ps3/360 in one stick.
Is there any difference between using the A-H 1-9 solder points for attaching a 360 board and using the main points the buttons connect to? Are the extra points just there for convenience?
I have a stick with no guide button and want to have guide for ps3/360. I’ll bridge the “Disable Guide” pins on the Cthulhu to make start+select simulate guide on PS3. Is there any way to get that key combo also work for 360?
Which USB on the imp, #1 or #2, requires the hotkey to be pressed on plugin to use?
