Wow I really should still be in bed, for some reason I woke up 2 hours too early. Years of irregular sleep patterns FTW! :looney: Here we go -
DAY 1
Met a few people in the industry which is always fun! Thanked Louise Simonson for entertaining me with X-Factor when I was a kid. Also thanked Len Wein for Wolverine’s creation (got my Wolvie shirt on heh)! I just missed Tom DeFalco since he wasn’t at his booth at the time. Todd Nuack had a lot of people asking him for sketches and just a big crowd when I passed by his booth so didn’t get to say much. I tried to get a sketch from Mark Brooks who has worked for Udon in the past but his sketching schedule was all filled up - like are you kidding me the con just freaking started ROFL! Found out that Mark Brooks will have some artwork in the Darkstalkers Fan Art Book, hooray!
Saw my favorite writer Peter David AKA PAD and once again talked his ear off like I did at the con a few years back heh! Thanked him for his Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man run which I can honestly say that was the last time I really enjoyed 616 Spider-Man (New Ways To Die to the side kind of). Talked to him about Spider-Man 2099’s upcoming TPB and he told me he was surprised himself when he found out Marvel was releasing it. I asked him if he was involved with the Timestorm 2099 storyline where Marvel is about to ‘re-invent’ 2099 and he said no. I said that I read that they were going to make Spider-Man 2099 younger. PAD said “How much younger could he be?” I said “It’s like they don’t want any version of Spider-Man to age.” and he said and I quote, “I know right?” Oh snap my and PAD on the same page HELL YEAH! Found out that he doesn’t have any Spider-Man or Hulk projects lined up sadly. I thanked him for the comic he wrote where Popeye and Olive Oyl got married! Since I’m a fan of Segar’s original Thimble Theatre comic strip (where Popeye came from) I loved the fact that he researched it prior to telling his story. And so we talked about characters in the original strip like HAM GRAVY AND THE WHIFFLE HEN man that was SO MUCH FUN! GO PAD! WHIIIIIIIIIFFLE HEEEEEEEEN!!! :lovin:
Ran into Reilly Brown. He was charging 60 dollars a sketch! :wow: Told him about Pained AKA Ever’s DP fandom, about him naming his daughter after Deadpool and so on so he agreed to do both the Deadpool and Bob Agent of Hydra sketches for 60, he was quite impressed! :clapdos: I told him how Pained told me before that he wanted DP on the blank Dark Avengers cover so he could show Norman Osborn that even though Norman is running things he’s still gotta watch out for Deadpool LOL so he said he might do something like that. I asked him if he would go to Wondercon and he said that it was too out of his way, but he will go to the San Diego Comic Con at the very least. Oh yeah I brought some DP and Bob reference just in case but he didn’t need it since those were two characters he knew very well heh!
So I couldn’t get a sketch from Mark Brooks and if Alvin Lee does show up, I don’t see him at the sketching area / Artist Alley so don’t know what’s up with that at the moment. But I did find Japanese Artist Ryu Moto who did Compass #1 with Cebulski. Hey there’s a Capcom / Chun-Li reference in Compass #1, good enough for me! :looney: Plus he was only charging 20 dollars for portraits, sold to Sano! I was trying to get a sketch of Dante from Devil May Cry this year, so I left a ton of Dante reference with him and I’ll pick up the sketch either Saturday or Sunday. Heh, super curious how that’s gonna turn out… :wonder:
Off to the panels! :wgrin:
They were not giving the Yatterman movie at the actual convention, the movie premiered somewhere in NY last night at a secret location and tickets to go see it that where at the con vanished pretty quickly so that was a no-go for me. No regrets because if I would of seen it I prolly would’ve had to skip the Wonder Woman movie, fairly sure both were around the same time or so. Still at the Yatterman panel with director Takeshi Miike we did get to see the first 9 minutes of the live action film, before anybody - EVEN JAPAN! Wow, despite being on what looks like some kind of post apocalyptic Earth it looks EXACTLY LIKE THE ANIME! Yes Doronjo has breastasis that Boyaky grabs! Yes the mech blows up and there’s a skeleton dust cloud! Go Takeshi Miike! SHOW THAT TERRIBLE HOLLYWOOD DRAGON BALL Z MOVIE HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE! PS if by some miracle the Dragon Ball Z movie turns out to be great ignore the last few lines of this paragraph! But yeah what I saw of Yatterman was ALL ACTION and Takeshi Miike said the whole movie is like that. RAW! RAW! RAW! CHING! CHING! CHING! But I still think Batsu and Morrigan beat all these guys up during Tatsunoko vs. Capcom but that’s just me… :looney:
Off to the Marvel Dark Reign panel! Wow so much stuff to remember… There’s going to be a new Dark Reign Young Avengers comic by the writer of Captain Britain book, Paul Cornell. These are not Heinberg’s Young Avengers, it’s a brand new team. There’s a young Enchantress on the team who looks like a teenage Amora (AKA 616 Enchantress). There’s also a young guy on the squad named X-cutioner, WOW who here remembers X-cutioner from the 90s man give yourself a cookie! :wgrin: Aside from the Young Avengers stuff, Scarlet Witch is coming back, Fantastic Four will have a new high profile writer whose name I just can not recall and in New Avengers they will start to look for a new Sorceror Supreme. Don’t worry, Doc Strange still has all of his powers, just not the the Sorceror Supreme title. Oh and Anti-Venom is getting a Dark Reign mini too but it was just mentioned and no images were shown. Go Eddie Brock! :clapdos:
Crazy Q&A at that panel. There was one fanboy who went on and on and ON that Doctor Doom should not be taking a backseat to ANYONE like he’s doing in DA and Dark Reign. Joe Quesada called him a Latverian representative. This guy became like a running joke at the show, with someone in the crowd reminding him that the Fantastic Four kicked Doom’s ass in the comics all of the time. I’m surprised the Doom fan didn’t jump him on the spot! :looney:
A fan asked if Sentry was ever going to get a personality and Bendis said no, that he thought it was original that they had a character with no personality. He said they would flesh out why he was with the Dark Avengers and more about his personality later on in DA.
Fraction was asked to do his Brubaker impersonation at the panel, hell someone even had Brubaker’s hat that he could wear!
But Fraction chickened out heh!
An African American kid had the Iron Fist symbol tattooed to his chest which he showed Marvel to make sure he got it right. You know, the same symbol Iron Fist has on his chest. JQ said “No, the top should be curved a bit more you’ll have to redo it.” to mess with him. He showed the symbol to the crowd and it looked really good, very spot on! :clapdos:
Someone asked if Marvel based Dark Reign on current events, given how it represents how messed up the United States was during Bush Jr.'s term. They said no that they planned the story a long time ago since Civil War and stuff and a lot of the parallels are just a coincidence, but they said that they were lucky with this story. In that even if Mccain won, they could still come off like “Wow this story captures what America is still like!”
Paul Cornell thanked the crowd for supporting his Captain Britain title through online campaigns to keep the book going since it was facing cancellation at one point but not anymore. He has a British accent so Joe Quesada asked Frank Tieri to translate for everybody. Frank said “Buy the fucking book!”
Steve Wacker called Tom Brevoort’s cell during the panel. Tom held the phone up to the crowd and introduced Steve Wacker of the ‘Weekly Wacker’ at Newsarama. JQ said that there was a weekly wacker at the panel too! Later he said there was also a daily wacker OOOOH…
Someone at the panel was dressed as Batman and Jim Mccan said “So Batman died in Final Crisis and now he appears at the Marvel Panel. Now Final Crisis makes sense!” Oooh, LOW BLOW!
Bendis was asked about Howard The Duck, and he said something like “He’s going to die in issue 53” as a joke. Bendis said he has never ever written Howard the Duck into a script but he’s shown up in like seven of his books! :looney:
When asked how many people died during Secret Invasion, someone at the crowd joked and threw out a random number, 18 lol! Then they said now they have to figure out which 18 it was. Bendis said “No 17 because we already have Howard the Duck!” And then someone at the panel said “No Doom dies first because he takes a backseat to no one!” Still picking on the Doom fanboy!
Best moment for me was when a guy from the crowd yelled that Amazing Spider-Man is the best it’s been in years. Half the crowd applauded, half the crowd remained silent. Joe Quesada said, “One More Day sucked!” followed by him saying “Brand New Day blows!” which got insane applause and laughter from the crowd!

Oh yeah the guy who yelled from the crowd about ASM being so great was Steve Wacker who finally showed up, who is like the editor of the book… :looney:
After that I attended a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle panel that celebrated their 25th Anniversary. Wow, 25 years? I’M OOOOOOOOOLD… :wasted: I asked them if we were ever getting a collection of some of the later TMNT Mirage comics like City of War and the time period that I loved when different writers came out to do stories for the book, like Mike Zuli, Rick Veitch etc. They told me that a City of War TPB is coming out soon, like freaking FINALLY!
As for the time period when different writers came in to work on the book, um, basically Peter Laird is out of his freaking mind… Not only does he want to pull a freaking George Lucas and edit a few of the older stories tweaking them here and there but he wants to take the time period where different writers came in on the book, decide what is canon and what is not to make a definitive collection, IE decide what really happened.
I yelled out “NONE OF IT HAPPENED IT’S JUST A COMIC!” :annoy: Which got a mix of yeahs and boos from the crowd and someone at the panel said “Get him!”
Well if you wanted to know what the limits of your fellow CONTINUITY PORNAGROPHER are then this is it. Like what the hell Laird, put the entire series in TPBs now GAAAWD! :wasted:
Last but not least, saw the Wonder Woman movie with Bruce Timm! Wow, this movie is so freaking good! There’s lots of funny moments, adult comedy, romance, death, violence, Amazons going to war, flying horses and a version of Hades that has to be seen man it was great! It really fit their 75 minute time frame instead of feeling a bit too short like some of their previous straight to DVD flicks. The crowd laughed a lot during the flick (there’s a lot of adult sexual comedy once again HAHAHA) and cheered, everyone enjoyed the movie! It was like watching a live action Wonder Woman origin movie, that’s how good it is! March 3 2009 everybody, I know I’m getting the Blu-Ray! :clapdos:
Someone asked if Bruce Timm could make a Marvel cartoon what would it be. He said Luke Cage and Heroes for Hire. What the hell? Bruce Timm is a Luke Cage fan? He’s gonna have to remove him from the person who loves Luke Cage dearly. No not his wife MAAAANG I’m talking about Bendis! :looney:
Guess that’s it, off to day two! Wow I have to decide between going to a Batman Battle For The Cowl Panel or a My Cup O’Joe Marvel panel, like WHAT THE HELL… Maybe I’ll flip a coin, I still don’t know what I’m gonna do… :bluu: Well if I do hit the Marvel panel, DC does have another panel later but ah man come on IT’S BATMAN! Um, well, maybe not Bruce Wayne Batman but still, gotta find out if my homeboy Dick Grayson steps up to the Bat-Role heh!
