The Official Convention Thread

You live on Earth just like the rest of the fleshbags, that’s all I need to know. :badboy:

Don’t you know that Marvel gave us all Skrull masks last year? I wish I made it in time for the panel where they took a picture of the audience wearing Skrull masks. :looney:

I wonder what they will be giving out this year? H.A.M.M.E.R. ID cards with Norman Osborn’s face hell yeah! IN NORMAN WE TRUST!

and that’s one of the reasons I am officially going:lovin::lovin::lovin:
gonna hurt my pockets but it will be cool

NY Comic Con is having a Pre-Convention party tonight at Dave & Busters at 7:30. I’d go but I’m a bit on the busy side on top of saving my pennies for the actual con. Besides, the arcade games at the NY Dave & Busters suck… There’s like ONE Tekken machine which is like Tekken 3 or very old and that’s all the fighting you will get in… :bluu: If anyone from outside of NY is coming down, just hit up Chinatown Fair AKA CTF instead!

I might hit D&B up Saturday or Sunday, if I score a lot of FREE 10 dollar gift cards we might get at the con. So I can get like one beer per card or some nonsense like that. :looney:

Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (or “C2E2”) on the weekend of April 16th-18th, 2010 at McCormick Place in downtown Chicago.

Oh happy day for Chicago Comicon fans…

Sano, give reilly brown my manlove

That sounds completely disgusting.

updates sano

Wonder Woman movie (which is all kinds of awesome) let out way too late so I can’t do a real update right now since I need some shut eye so I can get to the con early tomorrow. I’ll try and tell you all either tomorrow or Sunday. I’m writing most of the important stuff down so no worries.

Having a great time, the con gets bigger and crazier every year!

No worries Pained Auron, Reilly Brown is doing sketches for both Deadpool and Bob Agent of Hydra on the two blank Dark Avengers covers, you’re good! There’s a lot of people asking for sketches in front of you so I have to pick it up either Saturday or Sunday. I told him all about your Deadpool fandom and he got a kick out of me telling me you named your daughter after Deadpool, hell it helped lower the price he was charging.

wohoo!!! reilly is the man

Wow I really should still be in bed, for some reason I woke up 2 hours too early. Years of irregular sleep patterns FTW! :looney: Here we go -

DAY 1

Met a few people in the industry which is always fun! Thanked Louise Simonson for entertaining me with X-Factor when I was a kid. Also thanked Len Wein for Wolverine’s creation (got my Wolvie shirt on heh)! I just missed Tom DeFalco since he wasn’t at his booth at the time. Todd Nuack had a lot of people asking him for sketches and just a big crowd when I passed by his booth so didn’t get to say much. I tried to get a sketch from Mark Brooks who has worked for Udon in the past but his sketching schedule was all filled up - like are you kidding me the con just freaking started ROFL! Found out that Mark Brooks will have some artwork in the Darkstalkers Fan Art Book, hooray!

Saw my favorite writer Peter David AKA PAD and once again talked his ear off like I did at the con a few years back heh! Thanked him for his Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man run which I can honestly say that was the last time I really enjoyed 616 Spider-Man (New Ways To Die to the side kind of). Talked to him about Spider-Man 2099’s upcoming TPB and he told me he was surprised himself when he found out Marvel was releasing it. I asked him if he was involved with the Timestorm 2099 storyline where Marvel is about to ‘re-invent’ 2099 and he said no. I said that I read that they were going to make Spider-Man 2099 younger. PAD said “How much younger could he be?” I said “It’s like they don’t want any version of Spider-Man to age.” and he said and I quote, “I know right?” Oh snap my and PAD on the same page HELL YEAH! Found out that he doesn’t have any Spider-Man or Hulk projects lined up sadly. I thanked him for the comic he wrote where Popeye and Olive Oyl got married! Since I’m a fan of Segar’s original Thimble Theatre comic strip (where Popeye came from) I loved the fact that he researched it prior to telling his story. And so we talked about characters in the original strip like HAM GRAVY AND THE WHIFFLE HEN man that was SO MUCH FUN! GO PAD! WHIIIIIIIIIFFLE HEEEEEEEEN!!! :lovin:

Ran into Reilly Brown. He was charging 60 dollars a sketch! :wow: Told him about Pained AKA Ever’s DP fandom, about him naming his daughter after Deadpool and so on so he agreed to do both the Deadpool and Bob Agent of Hydra sketches for 60, he was quite impressed! :clapdos: I told him how Pained told me before that he wanted DP on the blank Dark Avengers cover so he could show Norman Osborn that even though Norman is running things he’s still gotta watch out for Deadpool LOL so he said he might do something like that. I asked him if he would go to Wondercon and he said that it was too out of his way, but he will go to the San Diego Comic Con at the very least. Oh yeah I brought some DP and Bob reference just in case but he didn’t need it since those were two characters he knew very well heh!

So I couldn’t get a sketch from Mark Brooks and if Alvin Lee does show up, I don’t see him at the sketching area / Artist Alley so don’t know what’s up with that at the moment. But I did find Japanese Artist Ryu Moto who did Compass #1 with Cebulski. Hey there’s a Capcom / Chun-Li reference in Compass #1, good enough for me! :looney: Plus he was only charging 20 dollars for portraits, sold to Sano! I was trying to get a sketch of Dante from Devil May Cry this year, so I left a ton of Dante reference with him and I’ll pick up the sketch either Saturday or Sunday. Heh, super curious how that’s gonna turn out… :wonder:

Off to the panels! :wgrin:

They were not giving the Yatterman movie at the actual convention, the movie premiered somewhere in NY last night at a secret location and tickets to go see it that where at the con vanished pretty quickly so that was a no-go for me. No regrets because if I would of seen it I prolly would’ve had to skip the Wonder Woman movie, fairly sure both were around the same time or so. Still at the Yatterman panel with director Takeshi Miike we did get to see the first 9 minutes of the live action film, before anybody - EVEN JAPAN! Wow, despite being on what looks like some kind of post apocalyptic Earth it looks EXACTLY LIKE THE ANIME! Yes Doronjo has breastasis that Boyaky grabs! Yes the mech blows up and there’s a skeleton dust cloud! Go Takeshi Miike! SHOW THAT TERRIBLE HOLLYWOOD DRAGON BALL Z MOVIE HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE! PS if by some miracle the Dragon Ball Z movie turns out to be great ignore the last few lines of this paragraph! But yeah what I saw of Yatterman was ALL ACTION and Takeshi Miike said the whole movie is like that. RAW! RAW! RAW! CHING! CHING! CHING! But I still think Batsu and Morrigan beat all these guys up during Tatsunoko vs. Capcom but that’s just me… :looney:

Off to the Marvel Dark Reign panel! Wow so much stuff to remember… There’s going to be a new Dark Reign Young Avengers comic by the writer of Captain Britain book, Paul Cornell. These are not Heinberg’s Young Avengers, it’s a brand new team. There’s a young Enchantress on the team who looks like a teenage Amora (AKA 616 Enchantress). There’s also a young guy on the squad named X-cutioner, WOW who here remembers X-cutioner from the 90s man give yourself a cookie! :wgrin: Aside from the Young Avengers stuff, Scarlet Witch is coming back, Fantastic Four will have a new high profile writer whose name I just can not recall and in New Avengers they will start to look for a new Sorceror Supreme. Don’t worry, Doc Strange still has all of his powers, just not the the Sorceror Supreme title. Oh and Anti-Venom is getting a Dark Reign mini too but it was just mentioned and no images were shown. Go Eddie Brock! :clapdos:

Crazy Q&A at that panel. There was one fanboy who went on and on and ON that Doctor Doom should not be taking a backseat to ANYONE like he’s doing in DA and Dark Reign. Joe Quesada called him a Latverian representative. This guy became like a running joke at the show, with someone in the crowd reminding him that the Fantastic Four kicked Doom’s ass in the comics all of the time. I’m surprised the Doom fan didn’t jump him on the spot! :looney:

A fan asked if Sentry was ever going to get a personality and Bendis said no, that he thought it was original that they had a character with no personality. He said they would flesh out why he was with the Dark Avengers and more about his personality later on in DA.

Fraction was asked to do his Brubaker impersonation at the panel, hell someone even had Brubaker’s hat that he could wear! But Fraction chickened out heh!

An African American kid had the Iron Fist symbol tattooed to his chest which he showed Marvel to make sure he got it right. You know, the same symbol Iron Fist has on his chest. JQ said “No, the top should be curved a bit more you’ll have to redo it.” to mess with him. He showed the symbol to the crowd and it looked really good, very spot on! :clapdos:

Someone asked if Marvel based Dark Reign on current events, given how it represents how messed up the United States was during Bush Jr.'s term. They said no that they planned the story a long time ago since Civil War and stuff and a lot of the parallels are just a coincidence, but they said that they were lucky with this story. In that even if Mccain won, they could still come off like “Wow this story captures what America is still like!”

Paul Cornell thanked the crowd for supporting his Captain Britain title through online campaigns to keep the book going since it was facing cancellation at one point but not anymore. He has a British accent so Joe Quesada asked Frank Tieri to translate for everybody. Frank said “Buy the fucking book!”

Steve Wacker called Tom Brevoort’s cell during the panel. Tom held the phone up to the crowd and introduced Steve Wacker of the ‘Weekly Wacker’ at Newsarama. JQ said that there was a weekly wacker at the panel too! Later he said there was also a daily wacker OOOOH…

Someone at the panel was dressed as Batman and Jim Mccan said “So Batman died in Final Crisis and now he appears at the Marvel Panel. Now Final Crisis makes sense!” Oooh, LOW BLOW!

Bendis was asked about Howard The Duck, and he said something like “He’s going to die in issue 53” as a joke. Bendis said he has never ever written Howard the Duck into a script but he’s shown up in like seven of his books! :looney:

When asked how many people died during Secret Invasion, someone at the crowd joked and threw out a random number, 18 lol! Then they said now they have to figure out which 18 it was. Bendis said “No 17 because we already have Howard the Duck!” And then someone at the panel said “No Doom dies first because he takes a backseat to no one!” Still picking on the Doom fanboy!

Best moment for me was when a guy from the crowd yelled that Amazing Spider-Man is the best it’s been in years. Half the crowd applauded, half the crowd remained silent. Joe Quesada said, “One More Day sucked!” followed by him saying “Brand New Day blows!” which got insane applause and laughter from the crowd!:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: Oh yeah the guy who yelled from the crowd about ASM being so great was Steve Wacker who finally showed up, who is like the editor of the book… :looney:

After that I attended a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle panel that celebrated their 25th Anniversary. Wow, 25 years? I’M OOOOOOOOOLD… :wasted: I asked them if we were ever getting a collection of some of the later TMNT Mirage comics like City of War and the time period that I loved when different writers came out to do stories for the book, like Mike Zuli, Rick Veitch etc. They told me that a City of War TPB is coming out soon, like freaking FINALLY! As for the time period when different writers came in to work on the book, um, basically Peter Laird is out of his freaking mind… Not only does he want to pull a freaking George Lucas and edit a few of the older stories tweaking them here and there but he wants to take the time period where different writers came in on the book, decide what is canon and what is not to make a definitive collection, IE decide what really happened. I yelled out “NONE OF IT HAPPENED IT’S JUST A COMIC!” :annoy: Which got a mix of yeahs and boos from the crowd and someone at the panel said “Get him!” Well if you wanted to know what the limits of your fellow CONTINUITY PORNAGROPHER are then this is it. Like what the hell Laird, put the entire series in TPBs now GAAAWD! :wasted:

Last but not least, saw the Wonder Woman movie with Bruce Timm! Wow, this movie is so freaking good! There’s lots of funny moments, adult comedy, romance, death, violence, Amazons going to war, flying horses and a version of Hades that has to be seen man it was great! It really fit their 75 minute time frame instead of feeling a bit too short like some of their previous straight to DVD flicks. The crowd laughed a lot during the flick (there’s a lot of adult sexual comedy once again HAHAHA) and cheered, everyone enjoyed the movie! It was like watching a live action Wonder Woman origin movie, that’s how good it is! March 3 2009 everybody, I know I’m getting the Blu-Ray! :clapdos:

Someone asked if Bruce Timm could make a Marvel cartoon what would it be. He said Luke Cage and Heroes for Hire. What the hell? Bruce Timm is a Luke Cage fan? He’s gonna have to remove him from the person who loves Luke Cage dearly. No not his wife MAAAANG I’m talking about Bendis! :looney:

Guess that’s it, off to day two! Wow I have to decide between going to a Batman Battle For The Cowl Panel or a My Cup O’Joe Marvel panel, like WHAT THE HELL… Maybe I’ll flip a coin, I still don’t know what I’m gonna do… :bluu: Well if I do hit the Marvel panel, DC does have another panel later but ah man come on IT’S BATMAN! Um, well, maybe not Bruce Wayne Batman but still, gotta find out if my homeboy Dick Grayson steps up to the Bat-Role heh!

Fun fact : mark brooks drew the first 2-3 issues of cable and deadpool

Updates after sleep lol but yesterday was way more eventful for me. Saturday is always a zoo because of the insane crowds… Batman panel was beyond crowded so I went to My Cup O’Joe, I guess fate settled that one for me heh! Painy Reilly said for me to stop by his booth tomorrow for the sketches. When I left him he was working on the sketch request that was just before yours.

DAY 2 AND DAY 3

Just gonna combine talking about the last two days and stuff ----

Went around asking people about upcoming Capcom comics and manga. Udon of course wasn’t there but since MattMoylan and Udoneko post on this forum I doubt you need me to tell you much. :wgrin: Del Ray said the second volume of the Phoenix Wright manga is only a few weeks away. I asked Devil’s Due about their upcoming Bionic Commando and Lost Planet comics, all I could get was a ballpark date - Spring 2009. They did confirm that both are still happening though. I asked Wildstorm about their Resident Evil comics. They gave me one of the free comics they were handing out and it had a Resident Evil comic ad on the back of the book. The image shown was an in-game image of Chris from RE5 hanging out with the new female partner of that game. The ad says the comic will begin in March and will last 6 issues. The creative team will be Sanchez, Sharpe and Clark. Then I asked Wildstorm about their upcoming Devil May Cry comic but they had no information available at the time. Ah well, GO GO CAPCOM COMICS IN 2009! :clapdos:

Speaking of Capcom related stuff, I got my Dante sketch from Japanese Artist Ryu Moto early Saturday morning. Hey Dante looks more anime than he does in the anime! :lovin: A very cool sketch, for only 20 bucks!

According to the NYCC website Alvin Lee was at the con but I didn’t spot him. Doubt he was doing sketches though and if he was he just wasn’t grouped with the other artists at Artist Alley.

I kind of let Reilly Brown delay the Deadpool and Bob sketches for Pained Auron as long as he could because he was very cool with trying to please everyone with drawings and there were a lot of people who were just there for one day or had to leave really quick. So he gave me the sketches on Sunday at 4:40 (the show finishes at 5:00). Our original deal was that since he was charging 60 for one sketch that he would do both in pencil only for the same price. But because I was so patient and waited until the very end he inked both of them! Pained Auron you basically got both at half the price he was charging! Reilly was a super nice guy and very cool. He stayed at his booth drawing the entire time he was there, doing very few signings at the Marvel booth. He really does hook fans up!

Got to meet Bunnyhead who was super nice, we talked about anime and video games for a long time ha ha! Fun! Bumped into Apathy and saw Fract4Life who I didn’t even know was going to the con. SRK REPRESENT!

Todd Nuack was always surrounded by people, all I got to do was tell him that American Dream was great and give him two thumbs up! Word man gotta give props to the M2 AKA the ‘Spidey is still married’ Universe whenever I can! It was almost like a running gag all weekend long but I did not get to meet Tom DeFalco… Whenever I went to his booth, he was at the Hero’s Initiative booth. When I went there, he was somewhere else. Repeat this scenario 10 times and there you go. Ah I didn’t want his autograph or anything since I rarely go for those. Just wanted to tell him how much I’ve enjoyed Spider-Girl in person and stuff, and maybe lay out my theories of American Dream’s parents possibly being alive… I mean come on I don’t buy that Cap and Sharon died in a car accident after it went off the road and fell into the sea! You know that President Travolta or whoever is running things in the future has them locked up somewhere… :looney:

I met one of the guys from the Ben 10 cartoon. I told him that I hardly ever watch the show but whenever I check it out that I do like the fact that they made Kevin 11 a good guy. He said the staff has a comic book background and that kind of stuff happens all of the time. He said that he’s not crazy about when that happens but he likes it even more when villains who turn good turn evil again, kind of hinting what might possibly happen in the show or just screwing with me, I dunno. I was all like “NOOOOOOOO… unless Kevin 11 takes Ben 10’s sister with him HA HA!” He said there is something there between them, hmmm… :wonder:

I passed by Snafu comics’ booth but Bleedman wasn’t there. Cartoon Network was showcasing Fusion Fall at the event and I had to ask if Bleedman was working on it at all because the characters - mainly older Dexter look EXACTLY the way he drew them in his Power Puff Girls Dojinshi if you’ve ever seen it. The people at Snafu said that everyone says the same thing but no Bleedman is not involved in the game at all, and Cartoon Network’s a big company for them to even proceed with legal stuff. Seriously like wow… I mean maybe it’s all a coincidence but I don’t know man… The very second I saw Fusion Fall I thought of Bleedman. Guess it is a price you might pay when you do free stuff with established characters… :crybaby:

There was some gaming at the event. Arc was there and they had Blazblue and the latest incarnation of Guilty Gear at the event! They even had an arcade stick! :wow: At the TMNT booth they had the old school TMNT arcade game, the first one and a contest where you could win it! Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 was also at the show. The only game I got to play was Afro Samurai. Looks pretty nice but I doubt I’ll buy… The way the economy’s going the only non-Capcom game I’m thinking of purchasing is X-Edge and that’s only because there’s Darkstalkers characters in it on loan from Capcom. Obama fix the economy please… :wasted:

I attended one panel where they showed the history of comic books as movies and TV shows. Ha ha they showed some old school footage of when Batman and Robin fought the Green Hornet and Kato AKA Bruce Lee. LOL at the panel they said Ward, the actor who played Robin was terrified of Bruce Lee. He thought one wrong move and Bruce could kill him. Where’s the animated Teen Titans Robin when you need him? They also showed Adam West and Ward’s original screen test. There was a line where Adam West said to Robin, “Ms. Cooper must never find out what we are really doing (being Batman and Robin) when we go on our supposed fishing trips.” The girl who was sitting next to me who was never exposed to the 60s TV show before asked me “Didn’t they know how gay that sounds?” All I could say was, hey it was the 60s… :wonder:

At one of the Marvel booths I attended I thanked Bendis for his work on Dark Avengers and New Avengers, saying that in recent years it has really come together as Marvel’s version of the Justice League. I also told Cebulski that I liked X-Infernus and that got an applause from the crowd. I asked with regards to X-Infernus characters about the Demon Council which Blackheart, Mephisto, Dormamu, Satanish and Hela are in. Basically if they would play a larger part in the Marvel Universe down the road. This is my round about way about asking what’s up with Blackheart, MVC2 character word! :lovin: Cebulski said that there was also a previous Demon Council which Loki is a member and there are plans for all of them in upcoming mystical comics. Go Blackheart! Still waiting for Shuma-Gorath to come back though…

The funniest thing that happened at the DC panel that I went to (only went to one, two of the ones I tried to get into were wall to wall full. Marvel’s were also crazy like that but I managed to get into three, though I tried to attend like 5 oooh…) was when someone asked them what is the order between the Batman RIP comics and the Final Crisis comics. On a screen Dan DiDio played a video that showed the order the comics went in. First he showed the first Batman RIP issue and an arrow pointed to Final Crisis 1, and then an arrow pointed to the second Batman RIP issue and so on. It went in a circle and the arrow eventually went back to the first Final Crisis issue. DiDio said said that the original cover of FC #1 was supposed to be a man in a cave, and that of course we all know by now is Batman. And then he said “And where it goes from here, only this man knows!” So the next arrow broke the circlular pattern and pointed to an image of Grant Morrison’s Head!:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

That’s about it in a nutshell. Wish I had a bit more energy at hand to toss up some of the bigger announcements at the con during the weekend but you are probably better off hitting 'Rama, CBR or just paying attention to the Marvel and DC threads here for that kind of stuff. The con was EXHAUSTING and the 20 digree weather didn’t help things, I’m really tired and worn out… Thank GOODNESS today the weather warmed up a hell of a lot. Still, I had a great time! It’s always good seeing SRK peeps and meeting other members. And talking to PAD again is always a highlight. The Wonder Woman flick and the Yatterman footage I saw kicked all kinds of ass too! Looking forward to the NY Anime and Manga con in October so I can go through the convention craziness all over again. :lovin:

The sketches and pictures I took I’ll put up either Monday or Tuesday. Need to catch up on rest and real life…

the sketches are sexy aren’t they?

Yeah, you know, that’s all well and good and very interesting, I’m sure. But did you get Jo Chen’s phone number for me or not?

The show was sooo cool

although I missed friday:sad::sad:which was important to me because Sho Sakurai was there and I am a huge fan, Sat and Sun was cool.

So many cosplayers, so many amazing artists, Mark Brooks and J Scott Campbell whom I adore showed up, but too many people were in the way so I never got to see them:sad:
the Marvel debate was awesome, I ran into so many old friends lol I met our comic moderator Sano who is coolbeans
the video game demos were awesome,

I never been to a convention, this was amazing and I will definetly do it again next year :D!!

I demand pictures of any sketches.

Nah, closest thing to that was I went to a panel with women in the field and their thoughts on superheroines. I was like hey maybe Jo Chen will stop by, hmmm… It turned out they were all romance novel writers - books with no pictures or very few, prose… They wrote about like Vampire chicks or whatever that had steamy sex scenes in the majority of their books. All of the women at the panel wore Wonder Woman tiaras but suffice it to say that was very misleading… There was one girl who was all like “Don’t fuck with me!” and “Read my books or I’ll go to your house and fuck you up!” LOL she was tiny and pretty cute but it was funny, I think she was joking… :wonder: I thought this girl would be perfect for Zephy who just may one day murder someone who starts and doesn’t finish reading Watchmen or something ROFL! But like… I dunno man I did not want to get my ass kicked for not reading her superheroine version of a Daniel Steel book with Fabio on the cover… “I can’t believe it’s not Battleworld!” Be afraid, be very afraid… :looney:

Pained Auron and Apathy-Inc - I’ll toss up the sketches, the Dante I got and Pained’s Deadpool and Bob in a few hours. The pictures I took I will try to put up either tomorrow or the following day.

My friend Dragonthebomb has sketches too but he doesn’t post on SRK too much nowadays. I’ll ask him for scans / pictures of the ones he got. Can’t guaranty much though…

Dante sketch I got from Ryu Moto!

From Reilly Brown, the sketches I got for Pained Auron. Bob Agent of Hydra and Deadpool!

Pictures from the con coming soon, just give me a day or so.

those sketches are super sexy
