Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor and Peter Bagge’s Hate are two of the greatest indies ever created in North America.
Third best is Todd McFarlane’s Spawn.

thanks for the recommendations guys
i read invincible. just isn’t working for me. i just stick with kirkmans walking dead. picked up scott pilgrim a month ago, cant wait to get the rest.
i will pick up hate. seems interesting.
has any one read anything by r.crumb?
I just bought the Life and Death of Ferro Lad.
can’t wait for it to arrive.
Crumb’s upcoming book, Genesis, is being quietly hyped up to be one of the most significant comics releases of the year. He’s also illustrated stories for Pekar’s American Splendor, particularly in the earlier years. That was my introduction to Crumb - his American Splendor stories. Those aren’t as filthy as his own stories, so they gave me a chance to enjoy his drawings and get used to his style.
Been a while since I bought a trade. Think my last one was Kraven’s Last Hunt in ‘08. Well, I decided to treat myself today. I found a copy of Peter Parker: Spider-Man: One Small Break. It collects 7 issues of Paul Jenkins’ run on the book. (#27-28, #30-34). Love Mark Buckingham’s art. Reminds me of Romita Sr.‘s a bit. Now if I could just find Jenkins’ Death in the Family trade, I’ll be one happy Spidey fan.
I also picked up Spider-Man: soul of the Hunter, the sequel to Kraven’s Last Hunt. It hasn’t been talked about nearly as much as Kraven’s Last Hunt, but it is by DeMatteis, one of my favorite Spidey writers. Haven’t read much of his “Life is beautiful” (as Zepy calls it) works, so I guess I’ll see how this is.
July 14th, all of Moore’s Superman Stories are collected in hardcover.
likely to be followed at some point by his GL stuff.
For more DeMatteis awesomeness, check out Moonshadow and Brooklyn Dreams. I don’t think either of those TPBs are out of print, and I think each of them distills the core essence of DeMatteis’ writing in its purest form. Moonshadow is more fantastical while Brooklyn Dreams is somewhat semi-autobiographical, so I feel like they each approach the subject matter from different angles.
His run on Dr. Fate is probably the greatest superhero stuff he’s ever written; that should have been collected in a TRADE, BABY, dammit! That’s one of the “Life Is Beautiful” stories that really worked well in the boundaries of a superhero story. I wish his Spectacular Spider-Man run from the early '90s was collected.
I think Boom! Studios is releasing a TRADE, BABY of one of his Vertigo minis, The Last One. That should be out this summer, I think. It’s an all right read.
Thread title changed upon P. Gorath’s request.
improvements coming throughout the day…stay tuned…
first post being updated, will now be a hub to use for collected editions links of interest
Here is a list of new trades that came out yesterday. Of note are the Final Crisis hardcover and Final Crisis Companion TPB. Marvel has been having some shipping issues with Diamond recently so the ULTIMATES OMNIBUS didn’t get everywhere, and the X-MEN: INFERNO hardcover (which is as big as an omnibus) is still missing in most places. The 30 Days of Night tpb is by David Lapham, and the Flash tpb is the second one collecting Morrison/Millar’s run.
update: it appears the Ultimates Omnibus and Brubaker Iron Fist Omnibus are available at Tales of Wonder

“Historical first post” haha. That’s great. It’s funny to read the stuff we posted over two years ago. Hard to believe we were ever that young. If anything, I find myself buying more TRADES, BABY than before.
I would also like to point out that www.torpedocomics.com has 50% off TPBs. Their selection isn’t as up-to-date as your other sites but their prices are good.
Here are the books that will be released on Wednesday: http://talesofwonder.com/category-exec/category_id/29/sc/2,141/cn/Arriving+Wednesday
Of note are Power Pack Classic vol. 1, Irredeemable Ant Man tpb (collecting entire series - first time in non-digest form) and Starman Omnibus vol. 3
DC September 09 solits are up at Newsarama.
Here are the collected editions:
I will be picking up the new Green Lantern and Green Lanterns Corps, Superman Red Son Deluxe Edition, Transmet vol. 4, and Saga of the Swamp Thing book 2.
A new version of GL: Rebirth? Just when I was gonna pick up the book too.
Apparently the old hardcover and tpb are out of print now (the hardcover being pretty hard to find) so they are releasing a new tpb. They also announced at a convention that they have an Absolute Edition of Rebirth in the works, so if you like those then I would hold off until it comes out.
Marvel Solits have been posted at Newsarama.
Highlights include the second Bendis Daredevil Omnibus and the first of a Dan Jurgens Thor tpbs.
so i went to the library, i got runaways v.1 and v.3 (which is really runaways season 2.5), astonishing xmen torn, and sins past. i hope sins past isn’t as bad as i have heard. i have absolute long halloween, batman year one, and superman birthright on hold.
It is so awesome how libraries have all these great books. I remember checking out Camelot 3000 as a kid. Should of kept it.
I tried to do a bunch of reading last weekend as my “unread” pile is getting out of hand (well it pretty much IS out of hand) but didn’t get through as much as I wanted. Here’s what I read:
Terminator Omnibus vol. 2 - this is the final Terminator Omnibus (as opposed to Aliens which has like 6 volumes now I think) and collects some older stuff and newer stuff. First up is the Hunters and Killers mini which re-reading it again it struck me how much the Terminator: Salvation writers ripped from it. The basic premise of the terminators becoming more human/cybernetic is there, as are smaller touches like the human rebel base being located on a submarine. The other stories are okay but too many focus on John Connor. Overall not as strong as the first omnibus.
Secret Wars Omnibus - A nice package, the story really pales in comparison to Crisis on Infinite Earths. Art is pretty nice. Good extras.
Punisher Max vol. 5 HC - The end of an era. Long Cold Dark is freakin awesome and Valley Forge, Valley Forge is the perfect ending to the whole show that ties back in everything from Born. I really don’t know why they’ve continued this series after Ennis. I certainly won’t be reading.
