The Official Collected Editions Thread (New & Improved!)

Romada Jr’s art in that is awesome.

Scott Pilgrim 5 wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t as good as 4, which is understandable because 4 was fucking awesome.

5 was like the empire strikes back sad crap that happens before the ending volume.

It’s been too long since I’ve posted anything. My collection is getting out of control…I really need a new bookcase. Stuff I’ve read recently:

Nova OHC/Annihilation Conquest vol. 2 OHC - I liked Annihilation Conquest, especially the mini itself. The OHC’s were kind of weird because they both reprint the same issues of Nova. I’m having a hard time loving Nova like other people online seem to. Maybe it’s because he seems like such a ripoff of what Marz did with Kyle Rayner and of GL overall. Plus Gamorrah was always Warlock’s woman so that’s just weird.

Cable Classics vol. 1 - This was actually pretty darn good once I got past New Mutants 87. His 2 issue limited series and first 4 issues of the ongoing are included. They are written by Fabien Nicwhatever and are very, very 90s.

Wolverine Origin - finally read this. man, what a downer. Were people actually hyped for this as the issues were coming out? pretty boring on the whole and i have no idea what it adds to the character. the only two people who have done wolverine right are grant morrison and garth ennis

spider-man: kraven’s last hunt - classic. was this retconned at some point?

Exterminators vol. 1-5 - vol. 5 was a little disappointing in that it left a lot of plot threads dangling but Oliver did the best he could in the space alloted and i look forward to the showtime series.

Marvel Boy - weird ass series

Kraven’s still dead so that story was never retconned. They gave Kraven three kids in later years so they could continue telling Kraven The Hunter stories. But his death hasn’t been touched.

born again > watchmen

There is no corpse.

there is no corpse

I just got

Joker
Fallen son
Wanted
Daredevil : guardian devil
Tbolts : faith in monsters
Watchmen
Messiah complex

I can answer some of this, actually.

08 list:
joker - Heard lots of great things about this, you should probably pick it up.

bats rip - Love or Hate it stuff here

bats/grendel (why so expensive?) - IDK

secret invasion - If you really want to read it go ahead, otherwise Wikipedia is your friend
l
ocal - IDK

imm:tfn (only im book i have is ultimate vol1 so is this worth it?) - This book is great for people who’ve seen the movie and want to get in the character. Its basically a sequel to the movie, and its great stuff.

waiting for i kill giants hc or tpb - IDK

Miscellaneous self contained shit I’ve been meaning to get for a while:
death of cap (what’s the difference between fallen son and v1-3?) - Fallen Son is not written by God(aka Ed Brubaker), so you don’t have to bother with it. If you see his name on it, get it and and read it in order; its the best comic book on the stands.

cap a omnibus - same as above

wwh (do I need to read plent hulk?) - you don’t; just understand the basic concept(Marvel’s smartest guys send Hulk into space, got his new friends/wife/unborn son killed, now he’s back to whoop some ass).

dd omnibus (miller or brubaker?) - Miller pretty much defined DD. Brubaker is currently doing a very solid run. Don’t forget Bendis’ work too, although the artwork is an acquired taste. I’d start with Miller though

wolvie: enemy of the state (is this 616 canon?) - Yes, this is 616 canon, yes it is awesome(Wolverine attacks a secret ninja fortress with a hijacked sentiel, for God’s Sake), and make sure you get “Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.” too.

absolute sandman - haven’t read it, but supposely its God’s gift to Earth
sinestro corps war (collected yet?) - yes it collected, and yes it is fan-fucking-tastic
iron fist - Kung Fu adventure awesomeness
criminal (ongoing?) - Easily one of the best comic books on stands
sin city - Before Frank Miller went fucking crazy
y: the last man - read above Sandman reply
walking dead - read abouve Sandman reply

Any hc’s that cover the significant post-cw stuff? something about osbourne’s rise to power? whats with the hype on green lantern? There are some post-civil war HCs, but all you need to know is through Wikipedia >_>. Osborn rise to power happens through Secret Invasion. Green Latern is exceptionly written/drawn and Geoff Johns is making everyone his bitch.

Anyone enjoy Warren Ellis’s run on thunderbolts so far? faith and especially angels are just so damn awesome as far as super hero tales when the bad guys win I can’t ask for much more:lovin: I JUST read that yesterday, and I love it dearly. It was a little slow around issue 3-4 with all the uninteresting talk with the Native American guy, but it all comes together brillantly near the end of Caged Angels. The dominoes were being set, the entire team implodes on itself, and the Green Goblin was fucking CRAZY. Too bad Warren Ellis left after these 12 issues(although the current run by Andy Diggle is actually really good).

I haven’t read The Joker graphic novel yet… I was at a convention yesterday but couldn’t find it for cheap. I may have to settle for the Amazon 32% off discount. I’m pretty sure it’s great because it’s Azzarello and Bermejo, and all of their previous collaborations have been top tier.

Batman: R.I.P. was beyond my feeble comprehension. Also, the art was like some weak '90s Image throwback style and the ending of the story says “To Be Continued in Final Crisis #6!” I’m a big Morrison fan and I really like Batman, but I wouldn’t buy this unless it was, like, two bucks.

Batman/Grendel - I saw plenty of these in the 50% off bins at the aforementioned convention. I’m hoping there will be plenty left over next year. I remember reading the first half of it years ago and liking it. It’s Matt Wagner, so if you like his stuff I’m sure you’ll enjoy this. And if you don’t, P.Gabby and his Compton homeboys will carjack you and maybe beat up your family.

Secret Invasion - This TRADE, BABY is too damn expensive for what it is. Eight issues for 30 bucks? And yet, ridiculously, buying the TRADE, BABY would still be cheaper than buying the issues. Wait until you find a deal on this one.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCAL!!!111 is the motherfriggin’ truth. It’s one of the best comics of the past few years, and the hardback is a wonderful, quality production. It contains plenty of sketches and all of the essays/commentaries that were originally included in the serials. Buy this as soon as you can.

I’m guessing the last book is Invincible Iron Man: The Five Nightmares? That’s a fantastic read. I’d definitely recommend it. I mentioned it a couple of pages ago, and I still think it’s one of the great Iron Man stories. It’s something that will make you excited for the character even if you are indifferent to begin with.

I Kill Giants - I’m waiting for the TRADE, BABY, too. I don’t even know what the heck it’s about… Just that it’s Joe Kelly and the art looks really nice. I’m gonna get it.

Fallen Son isn’t worth reading. It’s Jeph Loeb at the peak of his powers: completely art-driven, unsubtle, and overly intentionally sentimental. The ham-fisted approach doesn’t do Captain America justice at all. Read the Brubaker Captain America books for a real experience. You can start at the beginning (The Winter Soldier v.1) or start at the Death of Captain America. If you start at the Death, you’ll probably just get inspired to track down the previous volumes any way. Or you can just get the Omnibus and save some trouble.

Batman: A Death in the Family might be worth a couple of laughs. Yeah, sure, it’s the story where Jason Todd gets killed, but the plotting and writing in general or so inane that it’s impossible to take the gravity of the situation seriously. For example, the premise of the story begins with Jason trying to find his biological mother. Batman decides to help him. The only clue they have to begin with is that Jason’s mom’s name starts with the letter “s.” So somehow, Lady Shiva (the Asian martial arts mercenary) is someone they actually think could be Jason’s mom. Batman, supposedly the world’s greatest detective, couldn’t take one look at his own sidekick and deduce that the kid is completely a white boy. They end up tracking down Shiva, getting their asses kicked, and learning that she isn’t his mom. Huh.

Batman: Black and White - I like these. Like just about any anthology, the individual stories themselves may not ALL be awesome, but there were a lot of talented creators who contributed. It’s consistent enough that it’s one of the better Batbooks you could ever get.

Batman: The Cult - Never read it. Artwork looks kickass. Story’s by Jim Starlin, though, so it could either be completely stupid like A Death in the Family, or completely awesome like Infinity Gauntlet (if today were still 1991).

The Killer - Looks interesting enough, got plenty of indie street cred, but I haven’t read it. It looks like something worth checking out, though.

World War Hulk - The TRADE, BABY is too expensive. The title of the story completely sums it up. If anything, it’s the least pretentious of all the superhero secret crisis crossover wars. Planet Hulk wasn’t anything special.

There is a Frank Miller Daredevil Omnibus (and a companion Omnibus collecting all of the other DD and Elektra stuff he wrote after his initial run) and those are all seminal (“seminal” means “born of the semen”) works. They were ahead of their time for '80s comics and still hold up. There’s also a Daredevil Omnibus collecting the first half of the Bendis/Maleev run. That’s a must-read, too.

Books of Doom is another good read. It’s the Bru. It’s Dr. Doom’s story told from his point of view. That’s pretty much all you need.

Scene of the Crime is essential. That’s one of the pinnacles of early 2000s Vertigo. Just buy it.

Wolverine: Enemy of the State - I didn’t think much of it the first time I read it while it was being serialized. It was just Mark Millar being Mark Millar on a corporate-owned property. But a couple years ago I found both TRADES, BABY for cheap so I got 'em on a whim. I think it’s a lot more entertaining when you read the story in a short span of time. And the art’s awesome. Nothing to really change your world or make you rethink your stance on Wolverine, but entertaining. And there’s a WWII one-off story in the TRADES, BABY that’s probably one of Millar’s best single issues ever.

Avengers: Disassembled - With all the other stuff on your list, this is pretty low priority.

House of M - Another low priority book.

Eternals - The Neil Gaiman miniseries is fantastic. And it’s more JRjr art. (I haven’t read any of the new ongoing series.)

I don’t know what U Webhead is. Ultimate Spider-Man? In that case, yes, you should read it.

Invisibles - Maybe you should read The Filth first. If your mind doesn’t break after reading The Filth, then you should read The Invisibles.

Sandman - It lives up to the acclaim. Read it.

Sinestro Corps War - I think all of it has been collected into hardcovers.

Iron Fist - We all love it. http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=128887&page=93

Gotham Central - One of DC’s best series of the decade.

SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEPER!!!11 - Make sure you are on board with the comic before the movie comes out so you can scoff at the unwashed masses.

CRIMINAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!1 - Yes, it’s still ongoing. Right now it is sort of on a break, but Incognito is replacing it in the monthly lineup. (Incognito is by the same creative team.)

Sin City’s awesome, of course.

Y: THE LAST MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!1111111! will make you laugh, cry, touch yourself in giddy pleasure… It might not be the best comic ever, but it very well could be the best thing ever.

The Walking Dead - Good choice, bub.

I think the chronological order goes something like this:

Crisis on Infinite Earths
Identity Crisis 1-4, Robin 146, Teen Titans 17, Identity Crisis 5, Flash 186, Identity Crisis 6,7
Prelude to Infinite Crisis
Countdown to Infinite Crisis
Prologue to Infinite Crisis
OMAC Project 1-5, Superman 197, Wonder Woman 158, Batgirl 62, Hawkman 55, OMAC Project 6
Superman: Sacrifice
Day of Vengeance
Rann/Thanagar War
Villains United
Infinite Crisis
Infinite Crisis Epilogue
52 #s 52-18, World War III: 1-2, 52 #s 17-12, World War III: 3-4, 52 #s 11-1
Infinity Inc
Manhunter
Salvation Run
Secret Six
Justice League of America
Justice Society of America
DC Countdown
DC Countdown Arena
Shadowpact
Supergirl and Batgirl: Crisis on Earth 17
Final Crisis 1, Superman Beyond 1-2, Final Crisis 2-3, Flash: Rogues’ Revenge, Final Crisis 4-5, Legion of Superheroes 45-48, Action Comics 892, Fables 78, Batman: R.I.P., Final Crisis 6-7, Batman: Battle for the Cowl

Also, the overall story will make more sense if you read every other mainstream DC Universe title concurrently (chronologically by month of publication) alongside the reading order I provided. Good luck.

Geez, thanks for completing destroying my post Zepy. I was starting to feel good about my comic book knowledge too ;_;

Seriously, comics have started to consume my life recently. There’s so many good books out there, its taken over my love of movies/video games for the time being.

old: http://comics.ign.com/articles/624/624619p1.html

I just finished Annihilation Conquest: Quasar and Starlord. Great reads and I really enjoyed them. I was intrigued and enjoyed the friendship between rocket raccoon and groot. It was hilarous when rocket raccoon spit on Groot when he needed moisture. Im on my way this week to finish reading the rest of the trades. Im getting myself for War of Kings by also picking up the rise and fall of the shiar empire, deadly genesis, emperor vulcan, and kingbreaker.

I seem to be missing green lantern shit from my collection and yall been hyping john’s so any recommendations?

I cant remember the trade but i think that their is one where Johns select certain stories he likes.

Guardian devil was good until the big villain reveal. LAME

Start with Green Lateran: Rebirth and go from there.

Surprisingly, I had no problem with him being the big bad on Wolverine #70 recently. It plays to his abilities nicely.

Guardian Devil on the other hand…ugh. Never cared for it in the first place, and that reveal made it even worse.

Hmm…I kinda indifferent about Grant Morrison. I LOVE his All-Star Superman, but I can’t get into his New X-men. E for Extinction seemed self-indulgent, grotesque, and had way too much bullshit going on(random black bug room from nowhere? WHAT THE FUCK?).

Remember when we told you to reread Immortal Iron Fist? Trust us on New X-Men. Whereas Brubaker and Fraction have a style that’s more like an updated/modernized pulp fiction, Morrison’s style is more like listening to Pink Floyd while on an acid trip. Except New X-Men leaves out the acid - it’s probably the most straightforward and easy-to-understand series he’s ever written.

The bug room is meant to be grotesque. It just represents the dark places in Cyclops’ mind. Maybe it is random, but it’s purposefully random, if that makes sense.

New X-Men > all

also Guardian Devil still sucks

The best Johns GL arc so far has been the flashback one with Hal and Sinestro

I’m hyped that Marvel is finally rolling out some 2099 trades

Green Lantern Corps: Ring Quest - Another solid outing for the GLC. The done-in-one that starts the book looks at the fallout from the sinestro corps war and is very good.

I just got a new batch of books yesterday that included All Star Superman vol. 2 so now I will finally be able to finish the series instead of constantly re-reading vol. 1

Also Grendel: Devil’s Reign is now out in tpb. It collects the final arc of the Comico Grendel series, picking up the storyline from Grendel: God and the Devil and leading directly into Grendel: War Child. It, along with God and the Devil (also recently out in tpb) are probably the two best arcs from that 40 issue series and have not been available in trades until this point. This is masterwork stuff…pick it up!
