The Official Collected Editions Thread (New & Improved!)

Anyone read the new Hellblazer Joyride graphic novel? How’s that compare to the others? Is this something I need to check out?

over the weekend I re-read Justice Society vol 1, Ult. Spidey Clone Saga, and Beast Wars: The Gathering in anticipation of new trades. JSA was better on the second read, but I really need to get a copy of absolute kingdom come because I dont remember half of what went on in that book. Ult Cone Saga is not one of my favorite arcs, I think it throws too much in the mix and doesnt really let things play out emotionally so stuff gets lost in the shuffle

I just read Batman Under the Hood.

Felt like good writing, and felt like sharing.

It’s not by a big name artist so I think that’s why it didn’t get too much press.

Hope this isn’t a repeat.

By Judd Winick / Doug Mahnke / Tom Nguyen

there are no repeats…everyone has an opinion

Is Scion worth picking up? I’m interested in it cuz Jim Cheung was the penciler and I really like his art ^_^;;;

I never tried Scion, but if it’s anything like the other CrossGen books, it probably died out before the storyline could reach a conclusion. Well, if you get the TPBs, tell us what you think.

Also, Doug Mahnke may not be a big-name artist, but he’s completely awesome. I hope he’s super rich from royalties off The Mask.

I wanna read ultimate clone saga. All I have read fronult slide is the ultimate venom arc. Didn’t like it too much

dark horse is releasing a Mask omnibus in july-ish

Yup. Gotta get that.

Painy, just read all of Ultimate Spidey. And if you still don’t like it, read it again. Until you like it.

I finished Ult. Spidey vol. 9 HC (clone saga + ultimate knights). Definitely not my favorite two arcs but okay ult spidey is still better than most any other book marvel puts out. My favorite issue was the last one which was a peter/aunt may talkfest. At first I was sceptical but Bendis pulled it off really well and there were a lot of great emotional moments.

My shipment of new books came yesterday so I will be upping the reading output. Stuff on the horizon include Superman Camelot Falls vol. 2, The Boys vol. 2, Punisher Max hc vol. 4 (jesus, I now have 9 oversized ennis punisher hardcovers…), Green Lantern Sinestro Corps war, and more.

just got MK daredevil vol 3 HC, i’m so glad i started reading this run, it’s really good stuff

Haha, Doug Mahnke’s The Mask. I gotta pick that up.

This weekend I read Sinestro Corps vol. 1 and goddamn it was good. I wasnt anticipating the all-out action of the entire book. And is it me or did Johns ghost write the GL Corps issues as well? I had already been spoiled to some of the plot I dont know most of what is coming up. Also what is up with the word PRIME being linked to awesomeness? Optimus Prime, Grendel Prime, Superboy Prime…the rest of you guys can shove it but I truly believe that SB-P is the best new dc villain in at least 15 years.

Also read Punisher Max vol. 4 which collects Man of Stone and Widowmaker. I love me some Man of Stone…there is one page on there that is freaking perfect: a full page shot of Punny holding the dead O’Brien in his arms, his eyes staring straight into your soul with that look that says “a whole bunch of people are going to die next issue.” Widowmaker is really good too…definitely the most unconventional Punisher Max yarn as he is barely related to the action.

Oh man tell me about it, I wish O’Brien would’ve stayed around longer, but honestly the story would’ve been worse if that happened because that ending was just perfect.

placeholder for reviews:

Uncanny X-Men: Extremists - I was disappointed in this one. Storm is one of my least favorite x-men and the morlocks never really did it for me either. It felt like Bru was on autopilot. The colors were really muddy too

Shadowpact vol. 2 - I liked this one a lot actually. there had been some tepid reviews and after really liking Day of Vengeance i thought Shadowpact vol. 1 was a real mess but vol. 2 gets things back on the right track with a great 3-part Etrigan tale and a few good one-shots.

X-Men: Supernovas (re-review) - Love this book. Bachalo is really on top of his game in the first half and I really like how he has put the extreme cross-hatching away since his GenX days. Story is top notch all around.

JLA/JSA: Lightning Saga - Pretty good but a little forgettable. I wish Meltzer would have stayed on JLA longer

Superman Camelot Falls vol. 2 - Somewhat of a disappointment. Pacheco’s art is great but the story just doesn’t add up in the end. We were promised big things in vol. 1 but vol. 2 kinda just peters out. Somehow it turns into POTC 3 in the last issue.

The Boys vol. 2 - God I love this book. The Tech-Knight storyline was hilarious and the travel to Russia was good too.

Haven’t been able to catchup on my comics lately so can someone throw out any must have suggestions (preferably HC) new or old I don’t care.

Hardcovers I’ve been reading are Punisher MAX and Marvel Knight’s Daredevil, both of which I highly recommend

I read Batman Year one yesterday. It was good, but I dunno, just not as amazing as everyone makes it to be.

Is that a retarded statement? I think I am just trying to find something wrong.

Gordon was a monster.

It’s natural to be underwhelmed when the hype is so great.

Personally, my opinion on Frank Miller in general has soured a little over the years, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t one of the greats. I think I’ve just grown pickier.

it is. loved the art and story. pretty much the reason i got into crossgen at all.
