I finally read Watchmen. Wow.
for the 3 people who haven’t read watchmen
Spoiler
I just read the two chapters where Rorschach is in prison. That might be my favorite part of the entire book. He psychologically destroys the black guy.
finished walking dead vol. 3 hc…better than vol. 2. I thought kirkman was a little immature in his handling of the girl’s revenge against the general though.
started reading onslaught epic vol. 1 - man, how lame was wolverine during this period? pirate mask? no nose? hair growing everywhere?
I read Giant Killer. The premise is awesome, the art is superb, but the writing is sometimes decent, sometimes subpar, and sometimes I cringe. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it.
the fantastic four issue in the onslaught tpb is drawn by…carlos pacheco
SD is sort of uneven (as with a lot of the Image Comics at that time). The earlier issues are pretty fun to read.
I didn’t care for all the random characters that popped up from time to time. I did enjoy any story arc involving “The Fiend” though.
I just picked up “Demo” (Brian Wood/Becky Cloonan) today. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to read it soon.
Also does anyone have any recommendations for good “indie” graphic novels?
just picked up the ultimate spider-man hardcovers vol 1 thru 7 at half price book store for 10 bucks each!!! I read the ultimate six back in the day and im a fan of the ultimate universe so I wanted to see where it all began.
I like the fact that everything comes back to cap america. the super solider serum is the root of most of the ultimate universe.
Now I just have to get the ultimate FF hardcovers. Are they any good?
ultimate FF is really good, almost as good as spider-man in my opinion, some will say even better!
ultimate six is the weakest ult. spider-man arc. Ult. FF is good (vol. 3 hardcover is my fav) but doesn’t compare to ult. spider-man
way to tell me gargoyles vol. 1 tpb was out guys
i kept it a secret while thinking “mwa ha ha Gorath’s in for a surprise and i’m not telling!!”
Fables vol. 1 floats my boat, flicks my switch and tickles my pickle. I’m going to wait for awhile before buying the rest of the volumes though, as I assume not all of them are murder mysteries (which was the main reason I even got vol. 1).
Are the JSA-trades worth getting and are the volumes self contained? If so, then I’m jumping straight to Savage Times, Prince Of Darkness and Black Reign. Geoff Johns is alittle hit n’ miss for me though. 52 sucked, Green Lantern: Rebirth was good and Countdown To Infinite Crisis was great.
Because of the Watchmen talk from a few posts up I went home and cracked open my tome in order to hit some of the highlights. I especially enjoy when Rorshach is talking about his feelings towards the Comedian and how he respected him.
I started reading Predator Omnibus last night so now I am reading 3 omni’s at once (Pred, FF, and 4th World vol. 2). The first collection is Concrete Jungle which is written by the same guy that did all the stories in the Aliens Omnibus. Enjoying it so far. I notice in the back they include the DHC pred story where he fights a blind japanese guy that I always liked. Thats the cool thing about these Dark Horse omnibuses is that they reprint the little stuff from DHP and DHC as well as the mini’s.
I started re-reading the Bendis Daredevil hardcovers. I forgot how damn wordy they are. There are some hilarious lines/reaction shots with The Owl. For those not in the know they are planning on Omnibusing this run. I prefer the more manageable OHC’s but I know at least vol. 2 is out of print so Omni would be good for people who don’t already have it.
I’m hitting a bit of a lull with the Fourth World right now. I enjoy New Gods and Forever People is pretty fun but I just can’t get into Mr. Miracle and Jimmy Olsen is hit or miss.
you know it’s funny you meantion this, I’ve been searching everywhere for volume 2 (hardcover which would be vol 3-4 paper backs). I read number one and once i got past the wordiness i was REALLY enjoying it, but i really don’t want to skip any and go straight to volume 3 etc (i have OCD when it comes to reading in order, i’ll wait months for one missing issue haha)
vol. 2 is where it starts…vol. 1 is kevin smith crap with some good david mack
i liked the kevin smith stuff, so if it gets better from there that’s great! just need to actually find it haha
I finished reading the Kirby Fourth World stuff a little while ago. I think Mister Miracle is probably my favorite, but they are all good stuff. Even though all of those series got canceled prematurely, it’s still satisfying to read. The Jimmy Olsen run really evokes that old school, pulpy science fiction type of adventure story, sort of like a DC version of Flash Gordon or something like that. New Gods was the epic, Forever People was that quirky, offbeat, superfamily story, and Mister Miracle seemed to me to basically epitomize The King’s passion and manic comic energy.
I also read The Hunger Dogs OGN that Kirby did back in the '80s, which was supposed to be his last shot at making a conclusion. That had nice art but I think you could tell he wasn’t able/allowed to do all the things he wanted to do. There was too much stuff going on and it out-Morrisoned Morrison at certain points.
Now I’ve been reading some of the '80s series based on those Fourth World creations. DeMatteis did a 6 issue Forever People mini that’s well above average. He also launched the Mister Miracle ongoing. I’m on issue 9 of that so far. (After DeMatteis, Len Wein and then Doug Moench write Mister Miracle.) It’s been quite enjoyable so far, and this was the JLI era that Mister Miracle was a part of. Good humor, nice characterization, very cool artwork (Ian Gibson did the first 5 issues), and exactly the sort of paper quality and coloring job that would probably give goody a boner.
I also have the Mark Evanier New Gods ongoing series that launched around the same time as the Mister Miracle series, but I haven’t started it yet. I’m sort of expecting it to be pretty good, despite the fact that Evanier himself has said he wasn’t too proud of his work. I think that dude is a great writer. Hopefully it is better than he thinks.
I bought jodi picoult’s ww run. It wasn’t for me. I also got cable and deapool(<3) volume 1. Great stuff. I especially like the panel where cable picks up a gun and it says “liefeld xcess” on the side of it.
not the cinemax hand!
