The Official Collected Editions Thread (New & Improved!)

He did do a black and white 6 or 8 page sequence in an issue of the CRUCIAL Sandman Mystery Theatre back in the '90s. I think that might’ve been his first professional work for either of the Big Two. And that looked damn good. He had a great noirish style - the grays and the shading were just perfect. I wish he would draw that sort of thing more often. When he draws real people, they look great.

On the other hand, I once read his Uncle Sam miniseries. I don’t remember much of it, except that it was mainly memorable for being so forgettable.

Can someone recommend me so good Marvel TPBs? I’ve already got a ton of Essential Spider-Man (no, the black & white format doesn’t bother me that much) but my DC TPBs is already starting to overshadow my Marvel colleciton. Seems like DC has all the goods when it comes to TPBs. I can think of a ton of DC TPBs I want to own but when it comes to Marvel all I can really think of is the Essential Link and the first 12 issues of Marvel Knights Spider-Man that Miller did.

(non-hardcovers)
Complete Age of Apocalypse vol. 1-4
Spider-man: Birth of Venom
X-Factor Visionaries
Iron Man: Armor Wars
Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos

Thanks for the recs, P. Gorath. I’d forgotten that I loved Young Avengers and I never did read issues 8-12 or YA Special #1. So the TPB YA: Family Matters has been added to my list. Things are looking better for Marvel TPBs. I’ve heard the Runaways series was really good. Maybe I’ll check it out. Was Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways any good?

Like sano, I’m a huge Spidey geek so I’m gonna check out the Mary Jane titles. I’ll start off with Circle of Friends, Homecoming and then get to Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane.

I wouldn’t mind some more recs and I’ve got a list of TPBs I’m gonna get for certain, but I was wondering if these TPBs were worth my time and money:

-Our Worlds At War
-Identity Crisis
-Infinite Crisis

There are some others but I can’t think of them right now. As you can see, I’m turning into a TPB junkie.

our worlds at war - no
identity crisis - yes
infinite crisis - maybe, depending if you have read COIE yet as well as omac project tpb

Is Superman: Emperor Joker worth a read?

I’ve been reading All-Star Superman. At first, I really didn’t see what was so special about this book. The first two issues were OK but I really couldn’t see why this comic was making everyone jack off so much. From issue 3 and on is where it really began to suck me in. All-Star Superman is old-school meets newschool. “The Superman/Jimmy Olsen War” may very well be my fav story in the series thus far. I’m just hoping the book doesn’t tank when Morrison and Quitely leave after issue 12.

They’d better get somebody damn good to take over on All Star Superman after #12, because it’s going to be tough to top. If not… at least we got a good handful of issues out of it.

What the hell am I even talking about? At this rate, I’ll be dead of old age before #12 arrives.

Emperor Joker is crap. That story is a prime example of why people download comics illegally.

The first three pages of All-Star Superman are basically the three greatest pages of Superman. Three pages, five panels, eight words… and everything you need to know about Superman. I remember the first time I read that opening sequence. I was totally naked by that point. I can’t wait for the Absolute edition. I hope it comes out in '09 or '10.

Why is it taking All-Star Superman so long to get out? They sick or something? Seriously, what is the freaking deal.

I actually finished reading All-Star Superman vol. 1. I hardly ever finish a TPB in one day, but once the book sucked me in, it was really hard to put it down. My fav book in series may be issues 5 now. Luthor said some good stuff that made me think, mainly about how everyone male on Earth pales in comparison to Superman. Kinda makes me wonder, does Lois only like Supes because of what he can do? Well, at least as far as All-Star Superman universe goes.

Well, you also have to figure in the pre-Crisis comics, which serve as sort of a vaguely connected background for the version of Superman who appears in All Star. Lois might seem a little weary on the Superman thing in All Star, but they have been through about 60 decades of off-and-on courtship at this point. Not real time, of course.

I don’t know if this is what’s causing the delays on ASS (lulz), but Quitely’s projects have been delayed in the past due to his slow work pace.

Oh yeah, All-Star Supes is going back to pre-Crisis stuff. Ha, I, too, relaized hours ago what the abbreviating All-Star Supes would spell. I’m REALLY hoping the coming doesn’t turn to that aftert issue 12, though.

Are there any TPBs that have Neal Adams and Denny O’Neils work on Green Lantern? From what I read on wiki, it sounds like they’ve done the best GL stories.

The Green Lantern/Green Arrow crossover series is in TPB volumes, but be forewarned: as it was the beginning of the socially conscious comics era, it is a little bit cheesy at times. Good storytelling, but a little naive and not particularly subtle at times.

As far as I know there have been no delays on ASS - both All Star books are solicited bi-monthly (ie every other month).

ONeil/Adams GL/GA I believe is pretty readily available in tpb reprints. There is also a slipcase hardcover edition that collects the entire run. It pops up not-too infrequently on ebay.

#8 came out in early July. #9 is currently due out in early November. Now you know that there has been a delay on ASS.

P.Gabby doesn’t care about monthlies. He waits for the TRADE, BABY.

I just finished the second Preacher Trade, and damn does it just keep getting better!

I’m glad I waited on this, because it’s hard waiting two weeks to pick up the next TRADE, I can only imagine how bad it’d be if I had to wait an entire month between ISSUES!

Finally, the Skrull hops on board a Vertigo comic… not only that, but you’re getting the TRADES, BABY. One day, we may even upgrade your status to “Super-Skrull.” Keep it up.

its true…and i will gladly double dip on the absolute edition.

finished Alan Moore Wildcats. Pretty good in the end. Plot was very similar to Watchmen in a lot of respects. Ladytron was tight

That’s cool that you finally finished Moore’s WildC.A.T.s You should check out Joe Casey’s run on Wildcats. As good as Moore’s run is, I think Casey’s goes even farther. And Ladytron has a strong role in his run, too. He even wrote a Ladytron one-shot.

And if you check out Casey’s and Ed McGuinness’ Mr. Majestic TPB, it’s totally worth it. Ladytron shows up in a hilarious chapter in that book, and there’s even a Moore-penned Majestic one-shot that has an ending for Wildcats readers. The Mr. Majestic TPB might be out of print, but I am not sure. If it is, Moore’s Majestic one-shot is in the recently released Alan Moore: Wild Worlds TPB, but that is not as good a purchase as the complete Moore WildC.A.T.s.

A lot of the mid-'90s and late '90s stuff Moore wrote for Image was pretty interesting stuff, especially if you follow his work closely. You can see some similarities between WildC.A.T.s, Supreme, et. al and the things he later created for ABC. He never really ripped off of himself and repeated his own ideas, though. He just kept taking them a step farther each time and pushed the envelope.

Just started Superman: Birthright. The scene where Jor-EL and Lara send Clark off was touching. And baby Clark giving them the thumbs up? Awwwwww:lovin: So far so good. I’m liking it.

One thing I forgot to mention about the way Quitely draw’s male hands in All-Star Superman. The way you can see the freaking skeleton through the skin is just creepy. Like all the dudes have some sort of disease or something. My only (minor) gripe about a great book.

Well here’s my list of “To Get” TPBs. Let me know if there’s anything I should add to this list:

-DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore
-DC: The New Frontier: Absolute Edition
-Kraven’s Last Hunt
-Superman: Secret Identity
-Superman: Red Son
-Batman: The Long Halloween
-Batman: Detective
-Batman: Dark Victory
-Batman: Year 100
-Young Avengers: Family Matters
-Marvel Knights Spider-Man Vol. 1 HC
-Spider-Man Visionaries: Kurt Busiek
-Spider-Man: Reign

I’ve been thinking about getting more of Frank Miller’s stuff like Ronin and V For Vendetta. Alan More is a freaking pimp so I welcome any recs on him. I’m also a fan of Ed McGuiness artwork so if someone can recommend me a good trade with his stuff, much appreciated.
