the earlier episodes of this season were mediocre with a few gems here and there. but ever since mike quit, the episodes have been great. hopefully the last 3 episodes will retain this level of comedy. i smell holly coming back in the season finale “company picnic.”
I dunno about the new ep. It was pretty messy in my opinion. Things were happening too fast and it had too many subplots. There were some pretty funny moments but all in all it felt like an episode that should have been one of those longer episodes.
good stuff: Kevin’s chili, Creed/ Jim time, Michael & Pam, Erin just because she provided some ‘relief’ by just being refreshingly soft spoken
weird/ fail: casual Friday subplot, Ryan gone too suddenly, inconsistent tensions throughout
edit: wow I forgot how good Pam looked with her OG hair.
Chili opening was a little odd. Casual Fridays could have been left off on its own some other time. I’m fine with Ryan leaving (didn’t really like his character anyways). I wonder what they’re going to do with Erin. Are they going to keep her in the background or give her more depth?
There were some good shining moments last night, but I agree that it was sort of overstuffed with subplots. Not quite as good as recent eps, but still better than 95% of television…
You know, from the moment I noticed the intro was cut to like… 2 seconds or something (which seriously threw me off), I had the feeling that I was gonna be slightly disappointed. Well, I was, but mainly because of the length. When I checked the channel guide earlier it showed The Office taking up two blocks filling up the hour so I was like yeah awesome hour finale. Then 30 Rock came on after the third commercial!
Anyways, I thought it was ok. Really wasn’t that great for a finale, but it had its moments.
I lol’d at the ditching work scene, Dwight’s best friend, Toby’s twin, most of the volley ball stuff
I thought they did a pretty good job with the Jim and Pam ‘news’, but after that scene ended I realized that the episode as a whole covered like no ground at all. I know you can’t really build up to that sort of thing, but deciding to the end the ep like that sucked the significance out of all the interesting moments before it.
I really thought they would cover more stuff that was started with the Buffalo closing, Angela/ Dwight redux?, and maybe even a Jim/ Charles standoff. The Holly subplot was predictable and took too much out of the half-hour for nothing. Apparently they wanted the episode to be a cliffhanger, which it was I guess, but they didn’t go far enough into any of the interesting stuff to have that feeling from the season 2 and 3 finales. It really just seemed cut short, period.
All things considered though, The Office’s fifth season is over, and next Thursday night will be gay.
edit: watched it again, much better the second time around. still can’t believe this was a finale episode, but it was good
I seriously fast forwarded the Slumdog Millionare skit. Maybe I’ll watch it tomorrow. The episode wasn’t so great. It seemed to try and juggle too many things in a half an hour AND be a season finale.
Ryan could just be the secretary like he was when Pam was in NY.
