PSP also only had to run at a low resolution (480 x 272), which gave developers a bit more overhead and allowed some proficient programmers to create shortcuts and tricks to imply detail (stuff like baked lighting details and fake reflections for example) without heavily impacting performance. This low resolution trickery is also very noticeable on 3DS games.
Regardless of how they made it happen, at the end of the day, they still got nice graphical performance out of the PSP that was comparable to the PS2. As evident by some cross-platform titles that saw releases on both systems.
I may disagree with Darksakul on things here and there and believe he is completely wrong on others but I wouldn’t question his knowledge on tech…just saying.
I am not arguing the PSP isn’t a awesome handheld in its own right. But calling it a equivalent to the PS2 is a disservice to both. The PSP never was a mobile PS2, it was not meant to replace the PS2.
The PSP isn’t a mobile PS2. It has none of the rendering hardware associated with it. Like how the GBA is much more powerful than a SNES but performs about the same as SNES. The GBA’s cpu has to do more work in software and can’t use hardware rendering for visual effects
They’re doing 3 different FEW presentations at TGS this year. They’ll likely announce all the new characters then. Direct will probably just confirm the launch date of 10/20.
sheeeeit, so many great memories of the GBA… I’d say that was the point where portable gaming really started to get awesome. Even at the time, the tech for the regular Gameboy from '90 or so was disappointing to me… the only really cool thing was that it was portable… but the GBA… bruh. I did indeed kinda think of it as “like a SNES in your pocket”…and at least with the early ones, the only downside imo was the screen did not have backlight… if I recall they later had a light feature but even that was just something that wasn’t true backlighting… still, that shit was awesome. Much like the Switch now… I had my GBA with me everywhere, no matter what.
I just noticed this the other day… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebxNs5uw0vc
^may have to check into that one a bit more later…anytime a game’s general description just starts off with “twin-stick shooter style action…” ya already have my immediate attention.
*just noticed the system keeps track of your cumulative play time-- I have 50+ hours in Mario Kart at this point…35 in Zelda, and 30+ in Fate/Extella.
So that Mario/Rabbids thing is pretty good so far. Gorgeous graphics, and fun tactic stuff - though the between-missions bits could stand to be zippier.
Much like a lot of Switch games, it really shines in handheld mode.
