You can get the horn in first. Its just the chance of getting it is lower than the other items.
Also pro tip: Thinking about coins as completely useless in first is the wrong thought process for them. If you have coins and you are already at 10 then hold on to them in case you get hit as a means of both replenishing your top speed and you also get a small boost from using it allowing a bit better recovery after getting clobbered. Hold them until you get a better item to replace it.
Something else to think about in regards to coins in this game. If you are in a position where coin is your main item and something like a super horn is your secondary, you may want to consider using the coin as a sort of Boo buffer until you can re roll a slot with a block. The game gives you plenty of time to react to red shells and blue shells when they come for you and you can easily pop the coin and defend yourself when you need too…but over zealously popping the coin and then getting your better weapon swiped is shitty situation. Strat wont work against green shells or a lightning bolt of course but its something to consider.
I didnt think Boo was going to be that much of a menace but there has been a couple of times that asshole as put me in some uncomfortable positions.

It’s a combination of the Kart and the decisions I make in the race.
That race though it felt like people had enough of my shit though lol.
I generally don’t play aggressively when I’m in the abyss and I try to be patient to look for an opportunity to get out. Most people are just attacking anyone and everything and I’m usually just trying to collect coins to get my top speed up so that when I do make the break. I’m not usually aggressive until I’m out of the abyss or I view you as a genuine threat lol.

Lol. Immediately using the 3 shells when you’re in second place could be a toss up depending on surroundings and what you have in reserve. If you were pressuring 2nd place and he felt you were a threat he may not have fired on me until he felt he could deal with you and get some space first.
That mass of angry karts behind you is not in cahoots with me lol. I got mario karted in one of our races over taking a corner wrong. Shit was brutal and I got sent into abyss and couldn’t find a way to get out before the race was over.

You really want to stay out of the throng if you wanna win in Mario Kart 8. That means playing smart - and having three shells spinning around you is actually pretty great for avoiding all those thrown items. You’ve gotta play the long game.

Those numerous battle modes in Deluxe look like mad fun.
I’ve never liked Bowser Jr, but he looks like a lot of fun to use in this game. He just might end up becoming one of my mains.
