Super Mario Kart has aged incredibly I don’t know what you are talking about. It’s still just as good as it was back then and it still requires a lot of skill.
Every MK game went downhill starting with Mario Kart 64. The DS one was pretty good but that was about it. MK8D is good in a fun non serious way.
Basically, Super Mario Kart is Street Fighter, and every other Mario Kart game is Smash Brothers, ie, a game that thinks it’s a real racer but it’s just a stupid party game with all this random shit. In SMK, the person with more skill will win all the time, not lose due to some random dumbass game mechanic.
EDIT:
And I’m strictly talking multiplayer modes here, not single player or anything. But I am referring to both GP mode and battle mode.
I don’t know much about shmups. That’s more @radiantsilvergun3@ReggieH territory. I do know Ikaruga is available on the eshop though and it’s one of the GOAT shmups.
Uh, bastion is great, child of light is amazing, gunman Clive hd collection is great. Phantasy Star is a classic. Joe and Mack is on there. A lot of the older KOF’s are on there.
That’s like saying SF2 is basic as fuck. It’s okay to have your opinion though. It’s a game of mad skill so I can see why some people don’t enjoy it. It’s crazy to think how more advanced the drifting was in that game than the games that followed it with waggling the stupid stick back/forth to get the speed boost.
SNES Mario Kart requires much more skill than any other MK game. It’s fucking hard, and the drifting with the jump is way more nuanced than the sliding in later games.
That said, MK8D is my favorite Mario Kart game to date, with Mario Kart Wii a close second. Something about racing online opens the game up to another level of fun for me. They’re not as difficult, but so fucking awesome and fun. And yes, frustrating as hell with the god damned blue shell. But the vortex shenanigans have been there since the beginning.
If you want to check out a fun video, this guy ryukahr recently did a challenge on SNES Mario Kart where he has to win every single cup on 150cc. The catch is, he can’t use any items, and he can’t collect any coins or he has to restart. If you have a few minutes it’s a pretty fun series. Worth watching, especially if you played the original Mario Kart.
@GreyFoxx If you’re looking for some SHUMPS, the Switch is going to be GODLIKE for you, but the system has that status in general.
Anyhoo, Switch SHMUPS I really dig:
Ikaruga
Arcade Archives OMEGA FIGHTER
SEGA AGES Lightening Force (AKA Thunder Force IV)
Gunbird for Nintendo Switch
Sky Force Reloaded
Danmaku Unlimited 3
ACA NEOGEO BLAZING STAR
ACA NEOGEO LAST RESORT
Tengai for Nintendo Switch
Samurai Aces for Nintendo Switch
BLACK BIRD
Devil Engine
That isn’t even all the SHMUPs I own and that are available on the system. Seriously, the Switch is a SHMUP fan’s companion.
I’ve been playing Sky Force both docked and undocked and this game is so freaking good. It has a grindy element where you collect stars to upgrade your ship. Your ship starts out very week but as you collect more stars you’ll be able to increase the main cannon’s fire, add homing missiles, a shield, a nuke, limited lasers and more. Each stage has medals you can earn such as rescuing all of the people, shooting down 70% of the enemies, shooting down every enemy and finishing the level without getting hit. Once you earn all four medals, you can play the stage you’ve earned them for on hard. You don’t even have to complete all the objectives at once and finish the level without dying. As long as you fulfill any of the requirements, it still counts even if you fail the stage. I actually got Sky Force Reloaded on sale for $7.99 but I would have easily paid the regular $9.99 price since the game is this good.
Regarding Mario Kart, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is deffenitely a favorite of mine. And like Sonichuman said, you gotta play the long game. Too many people immediately use their items to take out whoever is ahead of them without considering what items people behind them have.
I enjoy Super Mario Kart but the AI in that game is atrociously cheap. Doesn’t mater what you go to slow them down, they will be back on your heels in seconds. They also can pull items out whenever they want. Shell heading for them? Instant Feather. You about to overtake them? Starman activate! Even when I played that game as a kid, I thought the AI was busted.
Been playing Turok on my Switch for an hour. I never realized how simplistic the controls were now. I also never thought I’d ever get to play it again on a nintendo console. Now give me Turok 2 and I’m set…although a longshot but an updated Turok Rage Wars would be oh so sweet to own.
I just checked how much I’ve played Baba is You and I have 4 hours and 25 minutes into it already. I have only completed 37 of the puzzles out of 200. At this rate it will take me over 25 hours to finish this game, and I’m sure the later puzzles are tougher than the ones I’m on now.
So… With both Mario and Luigi on the cover art for SMM2, is that maybe hinting at co-op multiplayer levels introduced in NSMBWii? How rad would it be to make levels that require teamwork??
Or, maybe we’ll be able to collaborate on building levels with other people?
I’m thinking about picking up the Liar Princess and the Blind Prince. The game looks like your basic platformer but I love the storybook presentation. I’m tempted to get for that alone.
