Ahhh the forums are back. Not that I post much now-a-days. Regardless. Good games to everyone @ Lycan’s on Friday at the pre-Cinderslam gathering. Had some fun and learned some new stuff as usual.

Also, could someone fill us in on the Cinderslam results…LOL!!!

(goes and grabs some popcorn and a coke)

Shinblade is the funniest dude alive some the shit he did to ppl was just funny as hell, my fav was asking the guy repeatedly if he would like to go back to the character select screen after the dude switched from Kung Lao to Lui Kang

p.s. my god the smileys are so ass now

Wow so this is ugh…different.

GGs to the locals that made it to Cinderslam. All the known issues aside we had a really good showing in all games seriously though if we ever go to another one of those someone from here MUST be running the bracket.

FlyMike: Whats good Mike

First off, it was great to meet all the new folks at Cinderslam. Narada, Cedric, SmokeMaxx, Mike Weng plus many more. I do want to say that I have a lot of issues with the way that the tourney was run. Narada, Cedric, this is not meant as a personal attack, but more as a chronicle of our experiences so that you guys know how we felt about the organization of the tourney. Sometimes the news is not pretty, but it needs to be put out there otherwise people will not know what happaned and changes can not be made.

One, we drove 3 hours there to arrive by the posted start time, 12:00PM. Tourney started almost 2 hours late, there were about 30 people in the SF bracket. (For reference, we get almost this many ppl in our weekly ranbats, that we run in about 2-3 hours) The brackets were done on a large printed piece of PAPER. Why you didn’t use free Tio software? Duckie had a laptop there that we could have probably run brackets on. Brackets were filled in incorrectly. I saw that you guys just used the top half of the bracket, and did NOT write in BYES. However, the main issue was the seeding.

Every ‘known’ Memphis player was matched up with a big name player from another area, in the FIRST ROUND. For example, Mike Weng, who came in 2nd in the ARK tourney to Justin Wong vs Woot. AceKombat vs Sev, Jrockeclipse vs Eraser. Jakob002, who came in 2nd at last year’s Cinderslam? Vs. Lycan. IN THE FIRST ROUND. Etc. The only Memphis players who got opponents who were NOT local champs, were the guys from Memphis no one had knew or heard of. Hell, you guys almost seeded me vs Sev in the first round! And on top of that, I got matched up with Sev ANYWAY in losers. I play Sev at every local tourney and ranbat, so yeah. Some people asked why this occurred, and and the answer we got was:“so there would be good fights” (I’m paraphrasing here, based on the reports I got and the questions I asked)

What’s wrong with this? Yes, you want to have good fights, but NOT IN THE FIRST ROUND. This also happened some years ago at the Devastation tourney, all the big names, Gootecks, Mike Watts, Ross, plus 1-2 names I don’t recall etc, were all matched vs each other in the first round. This had the result of making the losers bracket a death bracket in the second round, where all the big names that would have theoretically faced each other in the later rounds for “exciting” matches, all have to knock each other out of the standings before the 3rd round. So much for hype later on.

Also, any “no-name” players in Losers will have little to no chance to fight their way out of Losers because they will have no time to warm up, adapt etc while the big names eliminate everyone else from losers. It’s hard to empathize at first, but when you think about it it’s actually counterproductive to seed this way. There’s a way to seed big names in such a way that if they actually hold true to their rep, they meet up when it matters later in the bracket. Also, it makes you look like you are trying to conspire to eliminate most of the players from a certain area when you seed this way, forget about the fact that many people drove HOURS to this tourney to get pitted against someone they fight at home by the 2nd round.

But wait, there’s more:
Later in the bracket, leading into and just after top 8 Woot was matched vs FOUR Memphis people in a ROW! I know, sucks for the other top 8 guy right? Well them’s the breaks or whatever, if not for the fact that he had to eliminate 3 of his other local area players to get into top 8! In a row. Maybe I’m just paranoid.

And still more: We had top 8 settled right, with 3 of our guys in Top 8. Right? Nope. Somebody FORGOT Sev! Who had NOT been eliminated yet! He was at about 6-1 or so. But they had already announced TOP 8! What the fuck? Apparently Sev had been in the Tekken tourney as well, and the TO just forgot to make sure he had played ALL his SF matches before they announced top 8. By this point we were so frustrated, that Lycan, was was already in the announced Top 8, said forget it, I’ll fight him for the top 8 spot. So AGAIN, Memphis had to eliminate each other. There was NO reason why this should have occurred, or even for the 2 Memphis guys to have to fight for the spot. But apparently no one was sure how to fix the mistake so we had to fix it ourselves. Stupid. ZERO REASON FOR THIS TO HAPPEN! So instead of 3 Memphis in top 8, we had 2.

(Only good thing about this weekend was seeing Orel put out JrockEclipse in their final round, resulting in Jrock spiking his controller onto the floor like he just made a touchdown. Parts flew everywhere! Oh and even after all this Memphis placed decently in all the tourneys, Marvel, SF, MK9 and Tekken. )

Lastly, did I mention that we didn’t get out of there until nearly 10:30PM? Tourney wasn’t even done, we just finally all got put out. Tourney started at 2:00PM. Yes we were NOT the only ones who were angry and in disbelief by this point.

I don’t think we are coming back next year. So you guys are going to be 12 people short next year. I don’t know how many total players you guys had show up, but 12 players not coming back is not a small number.

Again, I want to emphasize that there is no personal malice held against you, I just wanted you guys to know how we felt about the running of the brackets in the SF tourney. This is harsh feedback yes, but I feel better for me to be an asshole and say something, rather than stay silent and have the same thing happen again next year.

The new forum look is garbage, just saying.

Can’t post!

Edit: Firefox works!

Rant later!

Good shit to everyone pre-Cinderslam at the crib and good stuff to everyone at Cinderslam!

Great meeting you too dude! I can’t necessarily answer for Narada, but I’ll give my perspective as a T.O. (Aren’t you one too? I thought I’ve seen your name somewhere listed as a T.O. …)

It’s difficult to start tournaments on time when players are late. You always want to give players coming in from out of town the benefit of a doubt. If you guys got stuck in traffic and got there an hour late, wouldn’t you still want to play? And your trip is only half as far as some of ours. That being said, there’s no reason for Tio not to have been used. I know because we tried something new at ARK III and it was a disaster. For running tournaments, Tio is by far the absolute standard.

It’s not always possible to seed by skill at random tournaments because sometimes people don’t know relative skill levels. For example, nobody from Mississippi (except Duckie?) has ever played Mike or even been in the same tournament as him. That being said, if matches were intentionally set up to have killers knock out killers in the beginning rounds, that’s very wrong. Results are meant to accurately reflect the best players. It’s not “rigging the brackets” to have good players spread out. If they’re the best, they deserve to place highly and not go 0-2 to Daigo and Justin Wong.

With the way this tournament did the brackets, Memphis playing Memphis early sucks since it was easily preventable. However, sometimes knocking out players you traveled with (even 4 in a row) is unavoidable. Memphis brought like 12-15 people. They’re bound to play each other a lot in a ~30 person bracket.

Part of the reason the tournament took too long was 1) the stream had some problems actually getting up and 2) most players wanted to play on the stream. When you force any tournament to basically end up playing on one console, things start taking much longer.

Anyway, those are my opinions on the matter. I obviously can’t speak for Narada, but I’ve ran into many of these problems before and some just take a try or two to get worked out. Any way you look at it, I’m pretty sure they won’t happen again at Cinderslam 3, so you shouldn’t really count yourself out of it.

Tournaments and stuff.

I’m just going to go ahead and say that while it will maybe take us a while to adjust, the new forum design is objectively superior.
