Traitor!!!

Flymike, how is that Takuma dude? That fat karate man looks slick cold in the vids and he looks like he got a little speed. I want to play him and that Kenshou dude. And what charcters can zone in this game? You know I love me some keep away!

Blazblue is really the only game where I felt there was very little actual playing and more waiting for your turn to do your combo. Also if you knew every little trick in the book some matchups were really dumb. Even so I still had fun with it because it looked flashy and my friends liked to watch it.

I don’t think long ass combos make a game bad necessarily if there are sufficient mechanisms behind why you got tagged in the first place, if anything it places an execution barrier for hardcore players to always have an edge.

Hmm,based on your playing style, I know just who you should use…

Cale: don’t pay attention to that stuff, this game really is about zoning and spacing…combos are essentially like SF, when you get an opening and if you have meter you can go crazy but it’s not that simple…KOF was never a combo heavy game (unless you counted stuff going on in XII, lol) and the way the cancels work with the meter are pretty neat but seriously, in a match it’s not going to end up being like that. You have characters that can play turtle style and aggressive…the engine is very good, just have to give it a chance but unfortunately there is not a Blanka//Honda type in the game for charge. Ash and Leona are closest to that style but the game is really about mindgames and spacing more than anything…

Yeah, after watching the Level Up launch party tourney it seemed like the top guys were only doing those crazy combos against the beginners or less skilled players. Sorry Jason, I had to take the time to watch some match vids, just wasn’t understanding a lot of stuff. But those Ash corner HD combos are ridiculous, and Goro with three meters is essentially instant death.

I like how in KoF meaty pressure is actually viable like ShawnMcCool said. Also the fast wake-up makes you really think on your feet and makes the game flow better. It’s hard to describe but after playing KoF SF4 feels really “clunky”.

Yes, because Bison surely cannot meaty at least 50% of the cast completely risk free.

Bison gets meaty’d for free by 100% of the cast, the only risk is that you may not hit him.

also true!

Cale, that’s not KoF. That’s DDTC “Don’t Do That Combo.”

Marvel hype died because it’s Marvel dude nothing special happens in that game

Astraboy- Yeah we meet at a KiT where SC4 was being held for the first time

Personally, I don’t like the idea of an execution barrier. There are plenty of other areas that experienced/smart players will have an edge, so I don’t see having the ability to drill execution for hours a day something that needs any added mechanism for rewarding. We don’t need to make Chess pieces heavier or slipperier to separate out the dedicated players.

Learning how to DP in SF2 was one thing. It was one move, sort of tricky until you figured it out, but you crossed that execution barrier naturally, in the middle of a fight; you needed that move to come out when you wanted it to, and it just naturally began to without needing to pump quarters into P2 for a training dummy. Skill in execution progressed at the same rate as skill in the other facets of the game, all of which could be learned in fights vs human opponents.

Long-ass-combos are a different thing in my book… basically anything that you have to take “back to the lab” or practice against a dummy for hours (rather than pick up while you are enjoying the game vs a human opponent) is just against the spirit of what I like about FGs. Don’t mean to sound judgemental, I can imagine what is fun about practicing long-ass-combos (same thing that is fun about DDR or guitar hero I’d expect) but I just don’t have the desire to practice them.

(this is not about KOF, just opining on the general idea of long-ass-combos and execution barriers)

meaty pressure was great in every SF game until 4…this is the first one where it’s not as prevalent…I used to use it all the time…it didn’t work if you had well timed wakeups but it was a 70-30 probably otherwise…

Cale, that is why they make characters such as Viper, high risk, high reward. I don’t think it’s necessarily bad, but I do think the training mode dummy people beat up on has reached all new heights, especially in this “flashy, me now” society where if the games doesn’t have “cool combos” people won’t give it a try.

Anytime you watch high end match videos in Street Fighter people just hate watching that, they all expect “flash” more than anything. Using the “flash” at the right moment is the most rewarding but 90% of the time it’s is trying to space and punish…

I’ve always come from the school of you learn by experience by playing against people. Nowadays the orthodox style of play is to watch the video of the day and try new things from those…and to be honest only the old schoolers are not as guilty of doing that as training methods have always been different from then but the point is “flash” is what a lot of people are drawn to…

Just picked up a monitor finally. On the front page of SRK they have a link to a newegg sale for the ASUS monitor that is one inch smaller than the “official” EVO monitors. Same specs as far as lag. It’s on sale for $120 and there is a $20 rebate offer with it.

So I just went 8-10 in a set against kenmastersx (stone nguyen, that got top 13 in Marvel at EVO) in Marvel, and it really gave me a boost of confidence. To go just about even with a player of that caliber feels surreal. He even sent messages back to me when I asked questions about Zero, Final Round, and a bunch of other stuff. He, Masta CJ, and a few others are awesome for taking the time out to help other players.

Welcome to our world Justin.

Thanks bro.

I’ve never fucked with irc. How’s the community there? Worth getting into?

Yeah Cale, what everyone else said. Give KoF a shot. You aren’t gonna see long ass combos very often in high level play, but when conditions are met a nigga might get crunk real quick. All the dumb shit requires meter and usually stems from good spacing or a punish. Good to have one in the chamber to use when that opportunity arises.

I’m just going play Kim/Ryo/Terry for now Team Boots to Asses

Yeah the only characters I can combo pretty well with are Kim and Terry, but most the time I just try to control space, anti-air, zone. and overall just stay solid.I have my punishes down too, so that’s how I roll for now.

ok how on earth do you unlock billy, it is infuriating not being able to play with the character that ive played in every kof cause of dumb fucking unlockable characters

You have to move the difficulty from very easy, back up to normal.
