Had some absolutely amazing matches with Reggie the last couple of days. Talk about education.
I wanna state this. Reggie and I were talking about this today, and it makes perfect sense. All this rah-rah about big damage juggles are NOT what makes a good Tekken player. It’s all about the basics. There was one point where me and Reggie were pretty much playing the game based on the basic logistics of the game. Here is what I think. If you disagree, let’s hear it, because it’s pretty universal; you can probably get good at any fighting game with this. lol And it’s pretty self explanatory, but bear with me.
Highs and mids can be blocked standing.
Lows can be blocked ducking, and ducking goes under highs. Ducking doesn’t block mids.
Some moves are safe, some aren’t.
Some moves have priority, some don’t.
If you know what moves are safe, and if you know what options you have when someone is hit with a certain move, or blocks a certain moves, or completely dodges a certain move, you’re setting yourself up for success. Especially with Tekken, which is a game that is based as strongly on frames as it is. You can get really good at Tekken without super complex juggles. I know it’s pretty much me and Reggie against you guys, but I’m being dead ass serious. Do you guys look at frame data and move priority? (That’s a serious question.)
^thank you.
regarding the question: no, not personally in any fighting game I’ve ever played. That’s so “kawaii” but if it helps then by all means go for it, but I usually base my logic on this thing called trial and error when fighting my opponents character. aka experience.
aka “street fighter game guides”. that’s old school but I remember buying that Alpha 2 game guide just to draw from back in high school. I remember letting Branden borrow it in our study hall since we both use to draw our own comics. Later, I actually started to read the tactics so, in essence, that would be similar to frame data and shit.
I’ve never got anything like that for Guilty. I based most of my know-how from in game training, playing survival mode, and playing Marvel actually. Marvel helped me with my button speed. there’s always Dust Loop but I can’t bare to be on that forum. A lot of the users have a “Klaige personality” if you catch my drift. If I want advice, I’ll ask Keith or David but I rather just play them which is how I learn (sometimes).
youtube, acho, and gamechariot helps too, lol.
all in all, shit differs for people who learn how to play.
All fighting games boil down to those basic facts.
I know things are quite a bit different in Tekken (You could take a solid week playing that game and find something new due to all of these characters having dozens of moves.) and in 3D fighters in general, but just about every single one works off of the same purpose.
You create an opening in the opponents Defense (somehow) and do as much damage as possible before they are able to return the favor. Whomever does that the most wins. I find that 3D fighters often include a larger move list to compensate for the lower amount of gameplay systems found in most 2D fighters.
I’ll tell you that watching those videos posted before shows that Tekken is rather brutal; one mistake can cost you 80% of your health if you aren’t careful. That’s probably quite a few games there, but in this (and most) it all falls back down on the basics. Since the basics in 3d games is so much more important, failing this can lead to a quick ass kicking. Where as in a 2D game, not knowing about SF4’s Focus attacks can lead to a quick dirt nap.
Very good tekken insight. Hell that applies to most fighting games in general. Master the basics and then worry about executing for big damage when your opportunity comes.
Tekken can be a great learning ground becauae there are no special moves in that game. You master movement and zoning with normals which is a huge skill that most sf or other players overlook at first. Also being safe is huge in that game and there is a lot more, but just mastering normals zoning and being safe can take you very far in any fighting game
