City Hunter: I haven’t seen this in a long time. The only thing I remember about the movie is the Street Fighter scene and the scene where he fights these two huge black guys. Otherwise, I don’t think it was anything special.
Drunken Master: Absolutely watch these movies. Pure craziness.
Police Story: I’ve only seen the first one, but definitely watch it. The final fight scene in the mall is ridiculous.
Project A: I only have the first one, and it’s been a long time since I watched it, but I remember this one being all right.
Snake in the Eagle’ s Shadow: Can’t remember anything about this one.
Wheels on Meals: This one was all about Jackie vs. Benny.
Here’s a little back story of the 3 movies i recommended…
Dragons Forever - This would be the last time Sammo, Jackie, & Biao were in one film…I believe this film was when Sammo & Jackie began their fallout together…Sad panda Sammo & Jackie did one more collaboration & that was Mr. Nice Guy but after that they pretty much had a huge fallout. There were rumors that they were suppose to do a reunion movie together, i think Robin B. Hood but never pan out…Im still waiting for one last film of these guys…
Who Am I - Most of the fans at the time were disappointed with Jackie Chan movies in the past few years as it lacked any good fights, as all of his movies in the past years was against international white guys, w/ lackluster finale. Who Am I came out & again more white guys, but the end sure did not disappoint. This pretty much showed everyone that Jackie still had it…It was good mix like Armour God w/ Police story films. This was Jackie’s last good high craze action film.
Gorgeous -Jackie just became huge in the US with Rush Hour…Sadly he didn’t really care for the movie at all. Jackie was also tired of doing the same typical movies at the time & decided to do a movie he always wanted to do which was a romantic comedy. Very light hearted film w/ a good cast. Very few fight scenes but the two fights you’re going to watch over and over again. You also got to remember the time period, this was when all the MA fighters were pretty much gone. We had Ekin Cheng pop singers dominating the martial arts world with their long beautiful hair. So this was a welcome change for us MA fans.
Im a big fan of 70s to mid 90s hk films…If you need some info on certain film, there is a good chance i watched it…
@rcaido- I personally don’t mind a Jackie Chan movie that isn’t martial arts, he’s a very talented actor. …and I wouldn’t mind knowing about other 70-90s HK or asian movies to watch, so go on ahead =)
Last night I saw a movie called Muay Thai Giant with Nathan Jones. Yes, that Nathan Jones. It was different from most of the movies he’s been in where he acts like a super-roided neanderthal. It’s more like a light hearted comedy with fight scenes. Basically he’s this regular guy who wins a trip to Pattaya, Thailand and get’s robbed. Ends up running into this little girl who is a street thief and her sister who is a fighter and basically becomes a major part in the two girls and their mother lives. The fight scenes were slighty below the level of what you would expect from most thai movies but they’re still entertaining. Jones also shows off some martial arts skills in this, mainly after eating something spicy, even though his character is a giant “punching bag”. All I got to say is the end of this movie is well worth the watch. All I got to say is Nathan Jones is the man.
Edit : This movie may go by Somtum. I saw it on NetFlix.
Muay Thai Giant is good comedy, decent plot, more comedic fights than serious fights, but they mix it up and make it seem serious, so it’s good fun. You really have to suspend disbelief for this one, but it’s easy to because there is this behemoth getting rage mode when he eats spicy Thai food, and I just couldn’t stop laughing.
edit: It’s THE INCREDIBLE HULK, lol.
Even the trailer has me in rolling in my chair, tears flowing from laughter, HULK MODE ACTIVATED:
I thought the story of Gorgeous was pretty terrible but the few fight scenes in the movie are great and the last one is just mindblowingly awesome. Made sitting through the movie totally worth it. Shit now I wish I knew where my DVD was so i could watch it.
This shit looks fucking hilarious. I must see this! Reminds me that I still need to watch The Good The Bad and The Weird.
Speaking of The Good the Bad and the Weird & Korean films in general, did you guys see the movie I saw the Devil? Holyshit, that movie has got to be one of the best revenge film of all time, its better then Oldboy…I also saw 71 Into the Fire, very solid war film & since this is a martial arts thread i also watch Man from Nowhere, best knife fight i’ve seen. Its like the asian version of the Professional…
Someone recommend me some more recent Korean films to watch…2009 & up
Mother (2009) from Korea. It’s not about martial arts, it’s about a retarded boy who may or may not have killed a girl and his mother who will stop at nothing to prove his innocence.
Good, the bad, & the Weird is a Korean version of Sergio Leone’s Good the bad the ugly…Asian wearing cowboy hats is awesome…Movie was pretty good, i really enjoy the neat camera work it had…
I Saw The Devil was disturbing, but that was the point. Some little things bugged me about it, but it was a good film. There is an edited version and an uncut version.
Other good korean movies: The Chaser, Thirst, Memories of Murder, A Bittersweet Life.
Man From Nowhere was fun. It didn’t have a lot of action/fighting, but it did a good job of building up to the climax, as well as having the guy be all mysterious in his ass-kicking badassery. The knife-fight was insane. I liked it better than the SPL/Killzone knife fight.
District 13 is a french parkour (free-running) action movie worth checking out. I heard
