The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Other then the rock band 2 test are there any other ways to test lag on hd tvs?

-DJ-

WOW…this tread is becoming a joke!!

No one is really reading beyond a page or 2, and some doesn’t even read a single post and expect an answer.
I bet you someone will skip this long ass post too!!

So far everything is being redundant!

Alot of people are still throwing out …my screen doesn’t lag but I have no proof blah blah blah…rock band2 test is tight test tizzle blah blah blah…VGA cord is a miracle drug blah blah…monster cables makes tokyo run blah blah blah…etc…

I know the original post is out dated but that’s no excuse not to read a few pages here and there.

Here are some of the thing that I believe is out dated on the original post.

-The original poster used the rock band 2 automagic test

This is not accurate!
its a tool but not an accurate tool…like using a jack hammer when u need to use a scalpel.

Here alternative method:

The LCD vs CRT stop watch test.
Alot of people use this test, but I believe that the result is still very random and not consistent .

The 60fps camera input test.
I have much better luck using this method. Have used this test for alot of my monitors and it seem to be very consistent. I believe this is the most accurate test

-The original post suggest to get a commercial grade screen cause they don’t lag

False!!
Ive tested some commercial grade screen
and these so called “digital display” are not lag free!!
Most are not even TV …they are just big monitors with no speaker and no TV tuners. They mostly use ips panels that are good for wide viewing (make sense doesn’t it?..for a digital display) these panel aren’t lag free.

  • the original post says that using some VGA will reduce lag.

This is still true but alot of people think its a solution that works for all TVs. The thing is that it only work on so few Tvs. I don’t think its relevant anymore especially for the new Tvs that are out. This method doesn’t guarantee anything…and plus you get a softer uglier picture. It’s all TV dependent.

thats all I can think of right now …but I know there more I want to say…maybe we need to start a new tread?

but till then how about you guys list all the TV/monitors you have, what you believe the input lag is, and what method of testing you’ve done…

I want to see how many people have XXXs model and see what type of lag there getting among other people who also have the same model.

Trust me, none believers, the lag is there, I didn’t really “feel it” on my Sony Bravia playing offline but…2 nights ago I switched from the Sony Bravia to a CRT specifically to test the difference…it threw off my timing by a bit on everything.

It was especially noticeable in training mode on combos, and also in juggle -> ultra during matches. When I first switched over, I was hitting inputs too early and whiffing. On the Bravia, I was used to hitting things by what I saw on the screen but i was actually pressing things based on what really happened 30 - 50 ms ago, essentially compensating for what I didn’t know was there. Obviously that doesn’t cut it when its instant, now I have to be more patient and wait out just a little more, but its actually a good thing, reaction window increases. Even online I noticed it gave me an advantage…it shaved off all of that tv delay and I notice I’m reacting to things a tad bit better (throw techs, jump ins).

This is exactly right.

yes, reduces confusion and hopefully eliminate redundant questions

Preach it, bruthah.

No, for real - listen to this guy, he’s saying what I tried to say like 4 pages ago.

Maybe we just need a new thread where the only posts which can be accepted are ones where people post up their input lag results for their TVs using a method we can all agree on… I know the OP of this thread INTENDED that to be the case here but perhaps the mods can be more anal about what they allow and don’t allow.

Just an idea. That way people know where to go to see results. Of course it will probably get destroyed by people asking if their TVs have lag instead of doing tests themselves, or just saying “Mine has no noticeable lag!” all the time.

No offense to those seeking answers (I was one too) but seriously. It’s like you haven’t even tried.

on the threads im an easy gonig guy… But when you insult one, expect an insult back.

p.s i dont give a shit if you do contribute to this thread. Your stupid newb ass has no place insulting no one.

the end.

Shin, can you post what model your 60fps camera is?

Check this thread on AVS forums for good input lag and testing info.

Still loving gaming on my samsung a650 hooked up via vga to my xbox360 outputting 1080p…:looney:

I SERIOUSLY considered getting an A650, those look slick as hell… but the Panny was on sale, and I loved its deep black levels so it won me over.

Did you perform any input lag tests on that bad boy? I heard it’s not bad as long as you’re using the VGA port but I don’t know that I ever saw any results.

I have not personally done any test other than RB2 which isn’t entirely accurate.

From a post in that thread I posted earlier, and also some more testing in thisthread.

So 16-32 ms when not in native resolution. 0-8ms when in native. Problem is the tests are not being run on CRT 1080p monitors, although Cynns control seems pretty solid, but he had to run the test in 1024x768. I would like to see a definitive test on one of these sets too. My guess is probably not more than a frame when set-up properly. Hopefully less…

Oh jesus. Stop whining. You asked a question that you wouldn’t have to have asked if you actually read the thread and got called out of it. Get over it.

are you hooking up from the xbox hdmi port directly to vga?

uh, no…using the microsoft vga cable to the vga port on the 650. Your problem is the ps3/a650 combo. If your playing sf4, then the ps3 outputs it in 720p. The tv scales everything to its native res of 1080p. This introduces extra lag. The xbox doens’t have this problem as you can set it to output either 720/or 1080. The xbox scaler is very fast from all accounts, faster than the sammy scaler anyways.

So even with game mode on you are getting noticeable lag using SF4 on the PS3 with the a650. Hope that makes sense.

Are we letting this die to make a new thread?

Possibly one with an updated first post?

Hey guys. I’ve had my HDTV for a good while now and I was thinking about getting one of those HD BOX PRO for my PS2. My TV is a 42" Sony Bravia 120Hz KDL-40WL135. This thing doesn’t have game mode. I’d like to know what you guys think before I drop $55 on something that may not be compatible with my TV. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Feel free to add me on xbox360 and prove me to be a “newb”

Is anyone aware of a PC monitor that is good for gaming but also has a matte black finish instead of glossy black? I don’t really care for glossy black finishes on stuff. 23 inches or so preferably.

Do you already have component cables for your PS2? If not upgrade to those first. You can either get the official PS3/PS2 ones or some cheap knockoff brand i don’t think it makes much difference. If you’re already using component cables and still think your image looks like crap than the HD Box Pro is your best bet if you can’t afford an XRGB or DVDO. There are threads on it at shmups and NG most people are very pleased with it, says it does its job very well. Even at its best it won’t look as good as a standard definition monitor or TV but it’ll still look good enough IMO.

PS - $55 + shipping = $71 shipped :wasted: Still way cheaper than the alternatives tho :bgrin:

Yeah, I’ve actually got component cables for my PS2. They help a little but overall, I can definitely still feel the lag. I don’t mind if the image looks kinda crappy or whatever, just as long as I can finally practice on my HDTV, lol. 71 bones isn’t too bad. Also, does the cable that Annihilationscape posted (HDMI > VGA) work for the PS3? I’m assuming it does, otherwise why would it even be posted? Hah. I want to get one of those too for my PS3 since I have Rock Band 2 for it.

well supposedly the lag is “minuscule” with the HD Box so hopefully it should help but the only way to really know is to try it yourself or know someone with the same TV who has tried it. And yes I would assume the cable works fine with PS3 unless someone else with a PS3 says otherwise.
