The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

I Sony Bravia doesn’t output my Dreamcast VGA Box. This is the one I recently Purchased. Any Recommendations?

i really wonder the difference in timing. i play on SD tv so i wouldnt know but 34 frames seems so little when 1000 milliseconds is one second

34 frames is 544ms, I think that’s just a typo though. I’m guessing you mean about 2 frames?

You have to understand that fighting games are built around timing and reactions. One frame links are obvious with timing, as well as things that have visual cues like reversals and plenty of other stuff. Things like overheads and throw breaks are designed to be reacted to in a certain way down to how many frames they last. You have a much easier chance reacting to an overhead that comes out in 22 frames than you do of one that comes out in 20.

I get 0 ms when I do the GH (Metallica) calibration test. I want to rent RB2 to test that way also, but do I need any of the RB equipment (guitar, mic)?

You need the RB2 guitar (‘wooden’ design neck).

So I don’t know much about all this stuff, but SFIV and most games only outputs at 720 P (On Xbox and PS3) so running that on 720, woudl result in the image centering, which would mean what? You have a smaller image with black borders around it?

I was interested in this monitor because it has HDMI, VGA, and Component Cables that I can use to hook up my 360 (Component), PC (VGA), and PS3 (HDMI).

so i ran the GH2 test on my xbox360 and my Samsung DLP shows no input lag! weeeeeee

Really?
I thought DLPs were supposed to be the worst. I’m really beginning to doubt all of these 0ms manual GH tests.

here ya go

asus vw266h:

well, there’s no actual input lag comparisons (all reviews say low or little input lag) but so far it’s been one of the most helpful websites i’ve come across after HOURS of research for hdtvs and monitors. who knows if they’re biased or not… it does help that sweetjohnny will vouch for it too. anyway, i wouldn’t have posted but the thing is only 259 bucks after a 30 mir and thought that would help some of you out.

Yea thanks knight. Its a tempting purchase considering that its a larger screen, good price, and relatively low lag. I mean would I honestly notice it so much? Probably not. I might have to go with the sucka

can you guys give me any input on this TV will be for gaming gand movies

Samsung PN63B550 63-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

63-inch high definition TV with 1080p resolution
Four HDMI, two component, and one composite video input; two 15W bottom speakers and SRS TruSurround HD for a rich surround-sound experience
Samsung E-panel technology like Ultra FilterBright Plus, 600Hz Subfield Motion, .001 response time, and a Mega dynamic contrast ratio
Anynet+ (CEC standard) technology makes system control of compatible A/V devices like a Blu-ray player or HTIB system a one-touch operation
One-year parts and labor warranty

doesnt mean a damn thing.

So the general consensus seems to be that GH is an invalid test for lag.

Is RB in the same boat?

Read the first post. If you want to find out how much something lags, test it yourself. Unless you ask about a display that is already being discussed, it’s just a waste of time.

alex6x6x6: I’ve done a lot of RB2 auto testing, and comparing it to the digicam method the results always seemed a little bit higher on the auto test. Because it’s fairly consistent (usually only sways 1 or 2 frames either way for monitors at least) its fine for testing relative to other displays. I have no idea on the manual test.

I’m looking between the Samsung F2380 LCD or the Dell G2410 LCD for console gaming only. I need a 16:9 display that offers 1:1 mapping of 1080p content. So these are the two panels I have narrowed it down to.

The F2380 has three times the real world contrast ratio over the G2410, both look great on or off and both offer less then 1 frame of input lag. It appears the Samsung has more screen response then the Dell. Below is reviews for both panels:

G2410 review:

Anyone have either one of these and use PS3 or 360 on them??

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

What method was used to verify this?

i didn’t think it could make that much of a difference either. bought an hp 2709m couple of days ago because it’s just a beautiful 27’ monitor for a great price. did ryu’s low strong->low strong/forward->fb with ease. also balrog’s low forward->low strong->dash. taokaka’s drive loops (the ones i can do) weren’t a problem. ling felt a little weird but manageable. marduk’s bts cancel combos felt natural. then i tried things online.

played tardo a couple of hdr games and couldn’t get a reversal to save my life. not to say that i would have won on my regular crt, but things weren’t right. so i tried to adjust the output on the ps3 and couldn’t figure it out. once i did, ran into a tick throw ken player and that was the true test. everything feels like you can adjust until you don’t have that reversal window against a tick thrower. i was using sim and would’ve thrown him all over the place on my tube tv, but since i couldn’t reversal throw, lost a bunch of rounds trying to reversal throw. monitor was great for every game i have (tekken doesn’t count since its online is garbage anyway) except for not being able to properly reversal on hdr. so yeah, you would notice the difference.

I promise I’m not trying to be one of ‘those guys’, but… I really need a recommendation.

I’m in the market for a new HDTV, something of the 50-inch calibur. My 40 incher is getting old; we moved to a new place and rather than sitting like 10 feet from the TV we’re now like 15 or more from it, so for the first time my TV is "too small:

So, it’s high time to upgrade… But input lag is a real concern. I dropped the $$$ for an HDFury2 (see pages 19-22 of this thread for my review!) so I don’t want that money to go to waste.

I really don’t care how old the TV is, as long as it’s 50 inches or so (bigger?) and has minimal to no lag, especially in the VGA port. 1 frame, that’s no big deal, I can live with that; any higher = no thanks. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Anyone know anything about this guy?

If not, then, yeah still need a recomendation

Comparably though, do you know if the HP has more lag than the Asus 26"? Oh and thanks for supporting me! (I work for HP lol)

nope, couldn’t tell ya. my asus hasn’t arrived yet. according to sweetjohnny’s response post (pg 40) to whoever it was, 15~22ms=1 frame of lag for the asus 26’. i can’t find where i read it, but some guy claimed the hp 2709m ran at 50ms which would equal about 2.5 to 3 frames. most reviews i came across for the hp said that it wasn’t ideal for gaming, mostly geared towards photo work and video stuff without giving exact numbers. all of this is really conjecture. input lag information is about as reliable as how they come up with crude oil prices. btw, i returned the hp this morning… sorry, but if i can’t play hdr, it’s not worth it.
