Does anyone have experience with the PS3 VGA cable? Please post impressions.
A regular CRT Television will not lag with a 480i signal (which is what the PS3 would be outputting). Technically, the PS3 would be downscaling the 720p to 480i, so unless the PS3 itself caused lag it would work fine. While it’s possible for the PS3 to lag this process, it’s very unlikely.
does anyone know a way to remedy the “mode not supported” on a hdtv when hooking up a dreamcast using vga?
If Rockband 2 has the most accurate way of testing lag then I’m probably gonna get that. Been debating between Rockband and Guitar Hero for a while now. I just ordered a couple converters to see if I can just use my component cable and connect it via vga to my tv. I’ll report back with my findings on my tv. I should have my gear next week I hope.
I do not own Rockband 2, but Poonage states that it does not require any input from the user (no strumming), so the only other way I can see it working is if it picks up the audio through the mic. Can somebody who owns RB2 explain how it works?
Apologies. Yeah, sounds unlikely that every TV has the audio and video perfectly synched to me too.
Rock Band 2 has 2 different ways of calibrating lag.
The first way is to strum the guitar every time a marker hits a certain point.
Obviously, the room for human error is way too great. This way is not recommended and is pretty ghetto overall (I’ve seen some of my friends trying to do it and I’ve seen lag tests amounting to -17 ahaha)
The second way is only possible if you have the Rock Band 2 WIRELESS Fender Stratocaster. The wireless guitar has a mic sensor and something else to sense the flashes of light that come from the screen. Basically, you hold the guitar up to the TV to calibrate the video lag, and once that test is done, you hold it up to your sound source (your speakers, wherever they may be) and calibrate the audio lag by just holding it near the speaker. No input necessary from the user, you just have to hold the guitar still in front of the appropriate sources.
And also, make sure you are using the wireless guitar itself to navigate through the beginning menus to get to the lag calibration.
Cool. Is this guitar with the sensors included with the rockband 2 package or is it a aftermarket purchase. That’s pretty hardcore of them to go into both video and audio lag.
Since Rock Band and Guitar Hero both have tests that calibrate lag, why doesn’t SFIV? it plagues fighters with the same intensity as it does the music genre.
I agree sir! I will be buying this tv after Final Round12. I have a PS3 and i’m a video game and movie buff! I must have great quality and I could never find it in the retail tv’s! Everyone should pour mad rep points your way for this great thread. I know I will.
- Even if SFIV had a lag test, it wouldn’t help out. Guitar Hero simply adjust the input delay so that it matches your screen. That simply changes the timing that the notes hit your screen.
Too much stuff is happening in SF for a delayed input to fix things. Not to mention all of the problems that would be introduced by doing it.
I know this is somewhat of a shot in the dark, but can anyone in here comment on picture quality using HDMI2/PC mode on an LNxxA650?
You got to read that thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1110472
Apparently it’s not great since it disable many picture settings.
As a sidenote for the people interested there are many TV tested for the input lag on that web site: http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/ (note these are EU TVs); the TV with the best input LAG are:
- Sony LCD W4500: ~10 msec max (with game mode ON)
- Sony LCD W4000: ~10 msec max (with game mode ON)
- Pana Plasma PZ85-86 & PZ800: 10/20 msec (or less ?) with IFC OFF
- Samsung LCD A656: 15 msec as per AVSFORUM but when using HDMI2 renamed as PC, this disable many picture settings and so the image quality may not be that great (same very low input lag with VGA cable)
EDIT: Btw, as per every latest user feedback, starting 2007/2008 the plasma does not suffer from burn in images and are a good fit for gaming due to their low input lag in general
EDIT2: After reading the comments on the review of the W4500 on hdtvtest.co.uk it appears that both the W4000 and W4500 have the same input lag of around 10 msec, so I edit this post
EDIT3: The W4000 does not have a game mode but it supposed to do approximately has good as the W4500
Did some additional reading. Although we don’t have the W4500 over here in North America, it is becoming readily clear that picking a TV for SF4 with minimal input lag and decent image quality is going to be very, very difficult.
I wasn’t implying that the game delay inputs or try to fix lag but to test if any lag is present and measure how bad it is in milliseconds and frames.
I would say that if you don’t have the Sony W4500 or W4000 series over there you should go for a Panasonic Plasma, either PZ86 or PZ800 equivalent in NA.
I have chosen myself to get a PZ86 for the quality of the image in TV and movies which is more natural compared to the LCD.
EDIT: or you monitor the A650 thread on avsforum and check if they achieve decent picture quality with the TV via HDMI2 renamed as PC, you can also buy this A650 and plug in your 360 via the 360 VGA cable which does not cost a fortune, this will give you good TV quality via HDMI and should be decent gaming quality via VGA (note that this does not apply to PS3 I believe since it does not upscale to 1080…)
I think I’ve decided on a 46inch Panny plasma for SF4. I should be getting it on the 14th just in time!
It is the 80u and not the 85u. Not much difference that I could see in the actual picture quality. Plus they are cheap at Costco and have the 2 year free extended warranty that Cosco offers.
Anyone have any bad experiences with these and gaming? I was looking for something with very little input lag and I just can’t talk my wife into letting me get anything much more expensive. I just don’t want to be missing reversals and shit.
I guess it would be nice, but there wouldn’t be much of a point. If the game finds out your TV lags, what can you do other than buy a whole new TV? I think this is one of those “ignorance is bliss” situations for most gamers.
In other news, my friend just bought a Toshiba TV that specifically advertises a “gaming mode” on the box touting no lag or something of the sort. If I can grab some rockblands I’ll let you guys know aboot it.
I have game mode on my Panasonic 720p HDTV. For PS3 my HDMI hookup is on a different output function (ie video 1) which is not game mode. I still see no lag though. So I assume this is a better option than A/V cables with game mode.
I’m looking to purchase a reasonably priced LCD monitor to use both as my primary computer monitor and a display for PS3/Xbox360. I’m not concerned about upscaling from 480i/480p but I am worried about upscaling from 720p.
I am considering this Acer brand one from NewEgg. While it has a 5ms response time the specifications normally don’t include upscaling delay. Has anyone experienced any kind of lag issues with these types of computer display?
