The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

You may be surprised that in fact I don’t find that hard to believe. But what I would find hard to believe is if the vast majority of the people here don’t play over XBL or PSN.

Apparently, I wasn’t clear enough as my intention was not to say that the lag itself gets lower when two people share the same latency, that would be ridiculous; instead I meant that the disadvantage of symmetrical lag cancels out.

Is it true that the lower end hdtv’s don’t lag as much as higher end because they don’t have as much of the post processing stuff (which is why im guessing they’re cheaper)?

Just bought Re5 for my PS3 and I’m NOT going to play it until I get a HDTV. Right now I’m thinking about a Sharp Aquos lc42d65u, but if I can get a Sceptre or Vizio that’s just as good for cheaper then I’ll go for that.

I would say yes, my Plasma is ~3 years old, its native resolution is 1366x768 which was common back then. Using the GH2 calibration test many many times, I have an average of less than 10ms. I also have no ‘game mode’ because I don’t believe it does much if any post-processing.

Well as far as 360’s go I have 0ms on my LCD monitor hooked up through VGA and I can run either 720 or 1080 on it. I think that’s the best route at the moment, pretty inexpensive also since more and more 24"+ monitors are popping up. The quality is not as great as component or HDMI but there is no delay whatsoever. I really notice the difference a lot when I play on my big Plasma since I already have 30ms lag from the TV and then add the internet latency lag.

Have you performed the RB2 tests?

shoryuken.com is a huge turd right now, hope we can get some decent moderation and posting rules in place asap. There’s really no point in me contributing threads like this when this is what they turn into.

my bad…i deleted

Thank you for your kind advice. This is really helping me understand my setup, and the issues we gamers face with lag due to fancy technology.

So my plasma’s native spec is for 720p. I have game mode but it’s difficult to measure the difference between the PC port without RB2. The PC port does feel smoother than HDMI-720p-Game mode.

Since I’m primarily a Tekken player (and I believe TK6BR will be in 1080p) my next purchase will be a native 1080p VGA monitor (I can see HDProBox coming in too). Cheers!

woah so I read this before I bought my tv, and came to the conclusion that the 360 and ps3 wouldn’t have lag b/c they don’t have to upconvert unlike older systems (dreamcast) But people at fr were bitching about a laggy tv, so whats up with that? My panasonic vierra better not be lagging, what is the most precise way to test this crap.?

I also have Panasonic Vierra. 42" 720p plasma. (XBOX 360 set to 720p, TV set to game mode using HDMI) don’t know the exact model (less than a year old). I did the Guitar Hero 2 lag test many times and kept coming back with zero ms lag. Honestly I think the test is not that accurate as it relies much on your personal timing of button presses. If you hit the button on time or early its always registers zero lag. If you hit the buttton slightly late it registers some lag, so I don’t know if its the TV or my timing. I think rock band 2 has an auto lag test but I’m not about to go buy it just to test my tv’s lag. I guess the good news my TV seems to have no to very little lag and I am very sensitive to lag.

I too use a VGA adapter on my LCD monitor and its a godsend considering I cant afford a HDTV atm. Unfortunately though I decided to move my xbox downstairs to the family shared Samsung 42" HDTV and dropped 500BP’s on the trot … fair to say that my xbox is back on my PC monitor now

has anyone done tests on the sony Z4100 series? i was trying to find some results on the avsforums but i wasn’t getting anything specific just vague comparisons like “less lag than the samsung 650” I am considering buying this set so if anyone has done the test or can link me to some test results i would appreciate it.

I’m on an HDTV (new Samsung, 1080p) and I don’t notice any lag at all. But this thread has me concerned. I’ll check out RB2 to see what’s up when I get home.

I’m wondering if it would be worth it to buy the VGA cable for my 360 - part of the reason I got the elite was because it came with an HDMI.

I just got one a few weeks ago from CC closing and did the RB2 test. It was only like 16ms-20ms without game mode on and that’s with the system going through HDMI to an audio receiver and then to the TV. Even regularly scaling stuff like the Wii and PS2 ran okay, though they’re using component and I turned them on with game mode and they have zero or close to zero lag.

Thank you for the reply. Has anyone done the stop watch test with this one. I will most likely be playing with a ps3 so i am very curious about that in particular.

Is the HD BOX PRO mentioned in the OP any good? How is the picture quality going from a 480i/480p signal via component to a VGA monitor? Lag-wise how does it perform? Planning to use it w/ a PS2, on a Trinitron CRT monitor mainly.

I have a Sharp AQUOS 32" LCD Television - LC32DA5U.

I have done four Rock band 2 lag tests, two right after turning on the tv from being off overnight and 2 after the tv had been on for a few hours straight. Its gets between 57ms-60ms.

I just wanted to let anyone know who is looking at getting a used tv because I don’t think this tv is in production anymore. Also, would this cause serious issues with me performing combos and such? Because I can’t get through Akuma’s normal trail mode and Ryu’s hard trial mode and I am wonder if I just such that much or could the tv be contributing to my suck.

There’s tests up on AVS here. The Sony has more lag than Samsung according to findings.

Does screen refresh rate contribute to or help reduce lag in HDTV’s? Because I have been shopping for a tv recently and I see a lot of them advertising 120Hz now like this one.

But when I wiki’d 120hz and read that article it seems like getting a 120Hz tv might be a bad idea.

From this thread I understand I want to find a Tv with a really low response time like this.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889101116
But if you look at that example it offers a feature for “gamers” that is supposed to help things but is it just a gimmick? Under specs it says its a 6ms response time but with this “vyper drive” it says it “eliminates any perceptible video game lag”.

Refresh rate has nothing to do with input/processing lag.

Response time has nothing to do with input lag.

Read the goddamn OP.
