The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Ugh, why can’t people wrap their heads around “it varies from model to model, the specific technology doesn’t matter?”

Your thoughts, gentlemen?

Well, I just tested the ASUS VH238H monitor:

In 720P game mode, it averaged between 10-20ms of input lag. In fact, it was either 10ms or 20ms, never anything in between. I couldn’t tell you what the deal is, but I’m disappointed since my 40 in samsung TV only gets around 30ms of input lag.

I tested in 720p because that’s the standard tournament setup (ps3 + evo monitor).

I wonder if there’s some settings I missed to reduce input lag.

Very interesting. Finally new tech is emerging from a major manufacturer that factors in people’s concerns for input lag. The lag thing has also spilled over into mobile phone users who experience it in touch screen UI response which is actually helping motivate manufacturers to look at technology that reduces it, thus giving them an edge in the mobile market which can only be a good thing for us as the tech’s applications spreads into other areas - i.e. LCD/LED television screens.

I’m very curious to see how this pans out.

Bought this recently…

Been playing on it for weeks.

No lag at all.

sigh

Ordered, and shipped.

And from everything that they stated on that avforum thread, yes, Plasmas are MUCH better than LCDs as regards input lag.

I saw that whilst doing my research for a new big screen, as well.

It looks to me like Toshiba is looking to fill a niche, in order to solidify themselves as something other than a third-stringer in the HD T.V. market.

If they don’t try to bilk it like a motherfucker, I see good things happening for them.

So, like you’re feeling this, or you’ve tested it?

No assholishness intended.

I am sincerely interested.

As I see it.

Thanks for testing this out. I am curious, what is your testing method?

That monitor is a GTG (grey to grey) monitor, and generally TN panels have less input lag than GTG based on my few experiences with them. Much better picture, but you can feel the latency even while playing Minesweeper on certain GTG models.

I like that this new monitor uses LED technology. Did you test it on Standard Mode as well as Game Mode? Theater Mode is popular among those with the vh236h for the picture quality (I have one), but that may introduce lag. Did they fix the speaker issue on startup? There’s always a delay in sound when first powering up those speakers, which can happen often depending on your applications.

Feels like it. No actual testing done, but I can hit everything perfectly in every game.

massive thanks

Just wanted to say a massive thank you for the OP posting this - I am now the proud owner of this: 40" LCD Display | Samsung IT Business Products got lucky and found an ex display for less than 50% retail, so happy.

Its overkill for just playing SF, but as a TV its beautiful, 1.1cm border and has windows embedded in it - which I am going to spend a good few hours/days looking into how to get the most out of. It also has some nice image settings, and after 10 mins of faffing with the menu I was in heaven :`P

It was cheaper than the 42" panasonic plasma I was going to get…

Sick. I is beyond happy. Thanks so much again for taking the time and sharing your knowledge.

  • It might have been done already but I am going to link to this thread on the avforums.

Have you tested the screen, or is it simply common (relatively, of course) knowledge that this TV has “little” to no lag?

VH238H was tested in clone mode against a CRT monitor using my PC on an ATI 5850 GPU. The anomaly comes from the ASUS ALWAYS reading either 10 or 20 MS off of the CRT. I believe it’s due to my GPU scaling the image for the asus monitor so I’m going to re-do the testing using a different method if possible.

I don’t know what you mean by GTG vs TN. This is a TN panel. So is the original EVO monitor; the VH236H.

It feels like (in games) it performs the same as the original. I’m coming from a P-MVA monitor so the color is HORRIBLE by comparison, but the lack of ghosting, low power usage, and consistant lighting are nice. In fact, I haven’t been able to definitiveness spot any back-light bleeding.

From here:

(probably old news) Will try it out tonight if possible.

I havent officially tested it yet, I’ll look into doing it - its got win embedded so hopefully theres an app I can download and run on windows to try it out (I need to do some more reading on this thread, only got through the first page). If you can help direct me towards any windows applications that can do the test please help, otherwise it might take me a while to get through 140 pages of this :) I am sadly very busy :(. I dont have guitar hero or whatever other game it was I remember seing had a test (cool feature I must say!)

I did play a couple of games just to see what it was like, and it felt really good (I got to play down Casino Arcade in london a couple of days ago, and this wasn’t far off at all, if not the same [I’ll laugh so hard if it lags like a slut now]).

Useful? Old?

Lag test it, for the glory of all!

On the subject of “signage” displays: does anyone know how NEC MultiSync monitors perform? Specifically, the V421.

spam: hmmz I dont have a crt monitor, arguably a lame excuse, but true none-the-less… I’ll keep my eyes open for an easy to obtain one to try it out and post. Apologies if I’m missing a way of testing without any extra kit and just software.

The free section on Craigslist always has a ton of CRTs around here. Dunno if your local listing has any, CL Europe seems much less used than in the US. Maybe there’s a more local equivalent?

If it isn’t any trouble, could you try testing 720p and 480p?

You know, I’m surprised nobody’s commented on this yet. My interest is definitely piqued.

I also recently purchased the Asus H238H and have been using it for the past 3 days. Unfortunately I can’t do any lag test as I don’t have a CRT monitor or TV, and I also don’t have the cables even if I did have a CRT TV. But anyways I think it’s great. I definitely felt a difference like I did before when I would go from playing at home to playing at tournaments where they still mainly use CRT’s. The first day I was missing simple combos that I would normally land on my other monitors. So I think this will prepare me for playing on CRT’s and other lagless monitors

My Sony LCD is starting to crap out on me. I’m down to my last working HDMI port. Even the VGA port is toast. Damn, they just don’t make them like they used to…:crybaby:
I’m picking up a beastly 225 lb. CRT TV this weekend. Should be fun getting it up the stairs…FU LCD’s!
